[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Rain plays Exium

DJ:
Rain

About the concept:
Here is the one hundred and fifteenth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers. or released on a label (and its sublabels. and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Rain’s mix of stuff produced or remixed by Exium.

About Rain:
Rain began play techno as dj at late ’90s. In 2000 together with Krankiss he launched promo-group Art of Music which first in Saint-Petersburg (Russia) started organize regular hard techno parties. From 2006 Aleksandr played as hardware live-project Mental Distortion. In 2009 hi joined as electronic part to ethno-electronic project Kamennoe More. In 2012 Rain leave Russia and went to Asia where he residence at present days (currently in India). Artist prefer more hardest substyles of techno with offbeat rhythms and IDM elements.

About Exium:
It is not often that electronic music artists venture into projects with other creators, but it is even less often to come across artists whose collaboration becomes a stable and lasting union, accounts for most of the work they do and goes far beyond a mere sporadic partnership. When such a project becomes consolidated and mature and shifts from deejaying to studio production, we can say we’re facing a pretty unique scenario, especially if the artists manage to keep up the rhythm, quality and increasing recognition for over a decade.

This is the case of Valentín Corujo + Héctor Sandoval = Exium. The success formula employed by this duo of deejays and producers from Asturias, Spain, that have yet to experience a setback in their career ever since in 1994 they decided to work together, is one of determined and solid effort. It is vital to stress that the creation process can be very different for solo artists that can devote to creation as and when inspiration finds them, in a spontaneous and anarchic way, and who can adapt to their changing mood, way of life, etc., from what it is like to create music when you’re part of a team: for each member of the partnership to contribute their best andfor them to put it all together is a much more complex process than what we may think. Achieving this and getting results in such quantity and of such quality as Exium have done, is an absolutely unique occurrence.

Their early work attracted the attention of national labels Tsunami and Warm Up, and the fact that twelve years later they are still working side by side, speaks volumes. In 2000 they released their first 12″ in the English label Zet, which was followed by a long list: Polegroup, Equator, Numb, Audio Assault, Planet Rhythm, Labrynth, Main Out, Rxxistance, Recycled Sound, Reaktor or Infecta have released their creations. Their productions made their way into the sets of the most representative DJs and producers and nowadays feature in the sets of artists such as Dave Clarke, Oscar Mulero, Surgeon, Laurent Garnier, Luke Slater, Aphex Twin, and many more.

From 2001, after they became resident DJs at club Rocamar in Gijón, one of the most important house and tech-house clubs in the north of Spain, and thanks to the success obtained with their first productions, they began to take their live performances to prominent clubs and festivals of the whole peninsula; it wasn’t long before their travels took them around Europe, wherethey’ve become regulars: Germany, Ireland, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy, Croatia…playing in clubsand festivals such as Tresor, Berghain or Awakenings.

Their career as producers continued to grow and, after releasing several EPs on different labels, 2004 saw the birth of Nheoma, a label for them to give expression to their style with total freedom. Nine records later, amongst the names they have worked with we find artists such as Oscar Mulero, Christian Wünsch, Reeko, Fanon Flowers, Radial, Gayle San, Inigo Kennedy, Jeroen Search, Nick Dunton, Hiroaki Iizuka, Groof, Developer or Kwartz.

In 2003 they took part in Oscar Mulero’s WarmUp Tour, and in 2008 they set up a new project called “Selección Natural” together with fellow countrymen Oscar Mulero, Christian Wünsch and Reeko. This laid the foundations for a great relationship between the five, whose work makes up a very important part of the best and purest techno that has been produced in the peninsula over the last decade. This affinity materialised in the creation of the PoleGroup platform, nowadays essential in terms of techno.

Their music and sets have undergone constant evolution. From an outset marked by hard, rough and minimalist sounds, now they aim towards downtempo, minimal, dub, detroit or electro, a shift which has taken them to pursuing solo projects which allow them to give free rein to all their influences. In this facet, their work is signed with the aliases Kessell (Valentín Corujo and his new label Granulart Recordings) and Komatssu or Tensal (Héctor Sandoval).

Besides deejaying and producing, their artistic zest has also led them towards the arena of visual arts, where they have collaborated with the Fiumfoto collective creating soundtracks for video installations and short films. Exium and Fiumfoto, who together form Exfium_;, give audiovisual concerts that combine experimental music, trip-hop, electro, electropop etc., and where the music is synchronized with several screens where images are shown. Thanks to this project they were awarded the prestigious Villa de Bilbao award, in the New Trends category.

2011 and 2013 set a new and important milestone along Exium’s path with the publication of their two LP albums: Roots of Time and A sensible alternative to emotion. These records released on nheoma and Polegroup are a demonstration of their incredible capacity and the degree of maturity they have reached after over a decade of working hard and with patience. Having received passionate critiques and a warm welcome only weeks after its release, these albums are proof that Exium have made themselves some space amongst the greatest artists of the Iberian techno and makes sure that a great future lies ahead of them.

Rain About His Choice:
I heard tracks of Exium at early 00s first time when started be interested of offbeat techno. At that moment was very few musicians who worked at this style. Today 20+ year after this genre heard increasingly and I like to discover many new names. But music of Hector and Valentin I still often use in my mixes. For me it’s well balanced in many perspectives if to be brief.

So, for my first deep diving in to the only one artist’s work for the NovaFuture’s invitation for “ABC Plays XYZ” series I chose this great project.

Welcome to the world of Exium music!

He began his journey in dance music as a raver in the 04-08 trance era while studying Economics at University of Texas in Austin. During his studies he was blessed with the opportunity to travel and rave in places like Amsterdam to discover the underground dub and bass scene and Miami to explore WMC and UMF. Shortly after he made a transition from his rap music background and began DJing techno and trance music in 08.

After college he attended audio school in 2010, received his audio engineering certifications and began his 15k+ hours in the studio. His first self release in 2011 was a minimal techno release. He won support from Todd Terry winning a remix contest in 2012 before venturing into progressive, trance and psychedelic sounds for some years.

In 2017, while living outside of LA, he decided to return to his techno roots. Start of 2018 he launched his Chemtrailz alias. Since then he has released a number of EPs and singles on labels like Autektone Dark (top 20 Hard charts peaking #13), Funk’N Deep, The Yellowheads’ Reload and Fatima Hajji’s Silver M. During this time he gained a bit of prominence playing and throwing parties in the Los Angeles underground warehouse and desert party scene- where he developed much of his deep, hard, hypnotic techno sound and attracted his first concentrated following.

More recently in 2020 after returning to Texas, during the pandemic, he won favor from Suara in winning a remix contest for Coyu’s rave banger Descontrol- slated for release on a 4 track EP beginning of 2021 with Flug, Temudo and Jay Clarke.

He also won a second contest in 2020, in collaboration with James Sanchez aka Amuck(LA, Technoids), landing two remixes for Ayako Mori; scheduled for release Dec 9 2020 on PTR Berlin.

During the 2020 Lions Gate Portal he was compelled to launch his own imprint Terra Novae.

When he is not in the studio or playing he is usually growing plants or snowboarding. To support his music journey he has been a master horticulturist for the most part of 15 years. Lately he only consults horticulture part time to make more time for his art.

[Mix]: Gerald VDH – NovaFuture Blog Mix December 2021

DJ:
Gerald VDH

Introduction:
Gerald is the founder and mastermind behind the infamous MEAT MARKET parties in Vienna, Austria’s thriving capital city. For almost a decade he has been running an outrageous amount of techno nights, all of which are well rooted in the LBGTIQ+ community.

Being a DJ first and a producer second, Gerald’s main ambition is to travel and play his favorite music in front of audiences all around the globe. His sets explore various genres of electronic music, while maintaining the balanced energy to keep a dancefloor busy for hours. With gigs in clubs like MMA Munich, Distillery Leipzig and (his favorite place on earth) Berghain Berlin, Gerald made a name for himself as a performer and music lover, who would give his life to save a punter’s night out.

In 2017 Gerald started the label MEAT RECORDINGS. The imprint specializes in pret-a-dancer techno music with a focus on quality and groove. The label has seen fifteen releases so far, six of which have also been published on vinyl. Watch out for more releases in the very new future. Providing the soundtrack for the motion picture NEVRLAND (2019) is another highlight in Gerald’s vita. He has just finished work on his first full length album, which will hit shelves mid 2022.
