Press Info:
Mote030 is the second remix package to reinterpret Planetary Assault Systems’ seminal record ‘Function 4’. Originally released on the influential Peacefrog label in 2000, Luke Slater now hosts ‘Function 4’ on his Mote-Evolver imprint and invites three of the finest minds in electronic music to tease the original apart and reconfigure it anew: Lucy, Marcel Dettmann and Shifted.

Lucy opens the record with a structural re-imagination of ‘Function 4’ where the beats become broken and the layers dense. Amid hisses and snarls Lucy skilfully reweights the elements and splinters the vocal, giving rise to a stunning, hypnotic atmosphere.

Marcel Dettmann, who appeared on the first episode of the remix package, is back with a new agenda. His ‘Base Dub Remix’ revels in swung beats, taking the material and submerging it into a space that is deep and aqueous, with euphoric results.

In Shifted’s hands ‘Function 4’ becomes galvanised. Shifted takes it hard, ratcheting the pace up-a-gear and accelerating into industrial terrain. Persistent and pernicious, this track sounds less like it was made by human hands and more like the product of a complex industrial process.

The record closes with Lucy once again rethinking ‘Function 4’. He mines the twisted beats of the original and moves them into hybrid dub territory. And in spite of the pounding bass line, the track manages to reach out into the realms of ecstatic ambience.

This package sees Lucy, Marcel Dettmann and Shifted highlighting the disparate facets of ‘Function 4’. The EP contains industrial, broken beat, dub and ambient elements; a multiplicity of ideas to move not just the body but also to provoke the mind.

Review (5/5 stars):
yes… package number 2.

Dubby Marcel is great. My fav.

Shifted. Typical. Industry-influenced beeping stuff. Perhaps this my fav?

Lucy is solid techno. Also nice.

As always Luke provides a very nice package on his label.

Info:
Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems follows the release of the album ‘The Messenger’ (OSTGUTCD20/LP10) with a 12″ of remixes by Silent Servant and The Black Dog.

With his recent releases on Sandwell District and Semantica Records, LA producer John Mendez aka Silent Servant has shown that his reduced atmospheric techno has firmly taken its place on the world’s main peak time dance floors. Taking one of the most banging tracks from ‘The Messenger’ album, he transforms ‘Bell Blocker’ to a slow burning hypnotic ride by removing both the super heavy bass drum and the bells of the original and instead layering heavy atmospherics over a rolling beat and finally introducing a new synth line that injects some intense emotion.

The Black Dog and Luke Slater have been travelling alongside in the electronic music scene since both released some of their earliest productions on the legendary General Production Recordings in 1991 and 1993 respectively. Since Black Dog’s founding member Ken Downie has been joined by Martin and Richard Dust they have pursued a new sound in ambient and recently down to the floor techno that has earned them new support and respect from many of their younger contemporaries. Planetary Assault Systems’ original ‘Beauty In The Fear’ is a tense mix of dark strings and jittering snares, for the remix The Black Dog combine their brooding melodics and dance floor oriented production skills to create the perfect counterpart to the flipside of this 12", somewhere between plain scary and profoundly deep.
The release is backed by a second ambient version of the Black Dog mix that is only available on the digital format.

Press Info:
Luke Slater’s coveted Planetary Assault Systems project continues its explorations into the outer limits with this first remixes package of the classic ‘Function 4’. Episode 1 features interpretations by two of Germany’s techno-leviathan’s; Marcel Dettmann and Chris Liebing.

Originally released through Peacefrog in 2000, the tracky, tripping metallic thump of ‘Function 4’ is a  great early example of Slater’s pioneering droning, mesmerising musings as P.A.S. With its chattering hi-hats, gated snares and humming kinetic energy, the original is included here in all its re-mastered glory.

Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann turns in an urgent and driving remix, led by a meandering synth theme that modulates teasingly as the track build. The distinctive voice sample is transformed as if played through a interplanetary P.A, and Dettmann uses expert restrain in introducing the stuttering percussion lines and static FX.

The much loved Chris Liebing delivers a nononsense mix that stays true to the original while enforcing a heavy four-to-the-floor pump throughout. Engineered to excite with its dirty beats, hissing punctuation and subtle builds, Liebing is on form with this heavily functional reshape.

And a message from Luke: “Chris sent me over a version of Function 4 he did earlier in the year, which I really liked and have been playing out a lot. As it turned out Function 4 was an old school favourite among other artists. At the time it was quite different not being a straight 4/4 record, so it’s great to bring it out into the open in a way in 2011.”

Info:
Mote-Evolver continues to push on into uncharted territories of electronic music with the ‘Parallel Series 1’, the first in a new series where 2 artists are featured side by side – contrasting and complementing. A dedicated producer with over than a decade of experience, British born ASC goes head to head with Luke Slater’s rather rare L.B.Dub Corp guise over 4 tracks of vivid new techno.

ASC’s textural, earthy and spacious ‘Slow Burn’ does exactly that. Building from reduced layers of paranoid percussion and hot fragments of sound, he creates a bass heavy world of machine funk that leans pleasingly towards more abstract zones. The somewhat brighter ‘Transit’ floats on a bed of liquid reverb, punctuated by jittering percussion, digital interference and brooding deep atmospheres. Certainly a trip into the outer limits, ASC’s uncompromising sound continues to grow.

L.B.Dub Corp is Luke Slater’s alias geared towards dub influenced jams which straddle house, techno and more experimental zones. Heavy on the static, tape delay and freaked-out melodic elements, what comes across initially as a carefully restrained DJ tool in ‘Lurcher’s Dub’, reveals itself to be an inspired fully-electronic jazz jam of sorts. The more grounded ‘Native Dub’ laces a rubbery bell line amongst carefully placed layers of delay as elements build,
then disintegrate with addictive hypnotism.

Review (5/5 stars):
“Slow Burn” by ASC is sick tool to push the audience from one side of the dancefloor to the other. A lit bit angry?

“Transit” by ASC is filled with brigther sounds. Something to reduce the speed.

“Lurchers Dub” by L.B. Dub Corp … is frisky with a slight note of Jazz.

“Native Dub” by L.B. Dub Corp .. is dubby at all.

Definitely another MOTE release I love. I guess Mote-Evolver will be my techno label of the year in 2011.

The Messenger – continuous DJ mix

Press Info:
The Planetary Assault Systems project has been active for some 15 years now, channeling an exploratory theme into cutting edge, non-conformist techno for the clubs but also for listening at home. His previous album for Ostgut Ton, “Temporary Suspension”, re- instated that classic P.A.S sound and found the dextrous artist touring even more with this tougher, purist techno aesthetic.

And yet again Slater maintains his prolific output with the announcement of “The Messenger”. In his own words it’s a project that stays very true and honest to the Planetary Assault Systems goal: a journey of discovery, to create new sounds which are not otherwise present in club music at this time.

From the album’s beautiful introduction track “Railer (Further Exploration)”, which floats through the bubbling ether before leading into the mysterious depths of “Beauty In The Fear”, it is clear that Slater’s role as sound explorer and adventurer has been dutifully fulfilled. With the sense of timing that can only be expected from such an experienced DJ and musician, we are led through a series of stand out tracks, where no one feels less pure, yet each has their own voice.

Indeed there’s a strong club element present here – Slater play-tested all the tracks and employed a careful editing process to make sure they all fit the description. Highly playable works of club-intended sound art, early heavy moments like “Bell Blocker” or the playful “Wriss” give way to even more severe messages as “Kray Squid” pulses onto the radar with magnetic energy. The drum barrage of “Rip The Cut” speaks directly to the dancefloor, perhaps the most rhythmically intense moment of the album, which is not to be put lightly as the rolling, filtering tones of “Cold Bolster” and “Black Tea” urge us further into perfectly frenetic moments.

“The Messenger” is a great tribute to all true explorers out there, striving to find enlightenment or chasing what Slater describes as the “undamental wave”.

Review (5/5 stars):
Planetary Assault Systems are back with a new album on Berlin’s famous techno label Ostgut Ton.

And once again it is a masterpiece. Starting slowly in the eastern atmosphere the system engine gets more and more power and rings the bells to rip cuts.

Great stuff…. looking forward to see the performance at the record release at Berghain.
