DIALOGUE was conceived as a series of musical letters written back and forth between Luke Slater, Anthony Child (aka Surgeon), KMRU, Lady Starlight, Speedy J and harpist Tom Moth (of Florence + the Machine) at the height of the pandemic between 2020 and early 2021. Using the common language of rhythmic ambient electronics, each DIALOGUE features three actors in a sonic conversation of longform improvisation between 15 and 25 minutes in length, with Luke Slater the common denominator.

The results are a brooding, psychedelic exchange of melody, texture, bass, oscillation, key changes and volume swells, which organically merge into complete compositions. It’s music that both reflects and transcends the artists’ common reality of isolation – a meditative, consciousness-expanding conversion of musical ideas born from necessity. Cosmic but not escapist. And very much of its time.

DIALOGUE wurde konzipiert als Austausch musikalischer Briefe, hin- und hergeschrieben zwischen Luke Slater, Anthony Child (alias Surgeon), KMRU, Lady Starlight, Speedy J und Harfenist Tom Moth (von Florence + the Machine) auf dem Höhepunkt der Pandemie zwischen 2020 und Anfang 2021. Mittels einer gemeinsamen Sprache rhythmischer Ambient Electronics besteht jeder DIALOGUE aus drei Akteuren in einer klanglichen Konversation als Langformimprovisation, in der Länge zwischen 15 und 25 Minuten, mit Luke Slater als gemeinsamem Nenner.

Das Resultat ist ein grüblerischer, psychedelischer Austausch von Melodie, Textur, Bass, Oszillation, Ausweichungen und schwellender Lautstärke, die organisch in ganze Kompositionen zusammenlaufen. Musik, die die gemeinsame Realität von Isolation der Künstler sowohl reflektiert als auch transzendiert – eine meditative, bewusstseinserweiternde Umwidmung musikalischer Ideen, aus der Not geboren. First released by Cazzo Film in 2001, ebo hill’s Bonking Berlin Bastards has long achieved the status of an underground punk porn classic. Like the Cazzo productions of director Bruce LaBruce, hill’s vision was both ahead of its time and a playful distillation of 90s and early-2000s Berlin Zeitgeist: queer, industrial, hypersexual, exhibitionist and fueled by electronic music. The story is told in large part by the soundtrack, now to be released for the first time.

The music follows a group of squatters, punks and drag queens as they fuck, party and stumble their way through an empty city at the turn of the millennium. Approaching these themes more through location than plot, the film’s narrative freedom is also a narrative of freedom; between chance encounters and sex in public, atop the maze of roofs in the city’s former East, bent over bridges and moaning in ecstasy at oncoming traffic, pants down in telephone booths, packed into sex clubs, in the shadows of abandoned factories and techno clubs lost in time.

Composed by improvisational techno trio AeoX and noise / industrial producer Rouage aka CNM (respectively), the music spans a broad range of appropriately pounding industrial, weird techno, noise, ultra-stoned ambient, improvised dub and electro. It’s a sonic spectrum that connects Berlin’s queer hardcore techno and squatter party scenes from which AeoX and Rouage emerged, drawing a direct line between the likes of Berghain-forerunner OstGut (a primary meeting point for the film’s cast & crew) to the more industrial, breakcore and noise-oriented independent party collectives and locations who provided multiple settings for the film, including Grüne Hölle and Stellwerk.

CNM / Rouage (Kathinka): Born in 1975 and raised in East Berlin. Co-organization of subcultural events since 1998 in Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig and Barcelona. Experimental music, collaborations, exhibitions and audiovisual shows since 2000.

AeoX: Active between 2001 and 2007. Originally a quartet, then a trio, the group eventually shrank to two permanent members: Alex.E and Hanno Hinkelbein. The latter founded Null Records, where AeoX released two album and numerous EPs. They also released on Mental.Ind.Records founded by former OstGut resident Cora S. Musically, the group experimented with combining improvisational hardware techno, breaks, traditional instruments (guitar, clarinet, piano) industrial and metal.

Wie die Cazzo-Produktionen von Regisseur Bruce LaBruce, war auch hills Vision seiner Zeit voraus und ein spielerisches Destillat des 90er- und Anfang-2000er Berlin-Zeitgeists: queer, industriell, hypersexuell, exhibitionistisch, angetrieben von elektronischer Musik. Die Musik folgt einer Gruppe von Hausbesetzern, Punks und Drags, die ficken, feiern und durch die leere Stadt um die Jahrtausendwende streifen. Bonking Berlin Bastards erzählt diese Themen mehr über die Drehorte als über die Handlung. Die erzählerische Freiheit des filmischen Narrativs ist gleichzeitig eine Erzählung von Freiheit: Von zufälligen Begegnungen bis hin zu Sex in der Öffentlichkeit, auf Dächern im früheren Osten Berlins, sich über die Brüstungen von Straßenbrücken beugend, dabei trotz und wegen des Gegenverkehrs stöhnend, mit heruntergelassenen Hosen in Telefonzellen, in überfüllten Sexclubs, im Schatten aufgegebener Fabriken, zeitverloren in Technoclubs.

Der Soundtrack wurde sowohl vom Improvisationstechnotrio AeoX als auch von Noise-/Industrial-Producer Rouage aka CNM komponiert und spannt einen weiten Bogen von explizit pumpendem Industrial, schräg klingendem Techno, Noise, ultra-stoned Ambient, improvisiertem Dub und Electro. Das musikalische Spektrum verbinde Berlins queere Hardcore-, Techno- und Hausbesetzer-Party-Szenen, aus denen AeoX und Rouage selbst hervorgingen und zieht dabei eine direkte Linie zwischen dem Berghain-Vorgängerclub OstGut (ein wichtiger Treffpunkt für die Darsteller und Crew des Films) und den eher Industrial-, Breakcore- und Noise-orientierten Independent-Partykollektiven und -Locations wie Grüne Hölle und Stellwerk, welche mehrfach als Drehort und Kulisse des Films auftauchen.

Beyond The Yellow Haze ist die Debüt-Veröffentlichung des nigerianischen Sound- und Installationskünstlers Emeka Ogboh auf Ostgut Tons Sublabel A-TON. Ogboh überlagert in dem Album subtile Elemente aus elektronischer Ambient- und Dance-Musik mit Field Recordings der Stadt Lagos – ein Ergebnis seiner zunehmenden Auseinandersetzung mit elektronischer Musik seit seinem Umzug nach Berlin vor sechs Jahren.

Ein Wechsel zwischen musikalischer Akzentuierung und atmosphärischem Wirbel, ein synthetisches Kaleidoskop aus Bässen und Polyrhythmen: Ogboh kreiert in Beyond The Yellow Haze ein atonales Orchester aus Hupen, Motorgeräuschen, Soundsystemen, Verkaufsgesprächen auf Bürgersteigen und diversen Klangartefakten der Danfo-Busbahnhöfe in Lagos. Das unberechenbare Resultat ist einerseits unverortbar, andererseits ortsgebunden. Es lässt sich als rhythmische Aufarbeitung einer weit entfernten Erinnerung der nigerianischen Metropole beschreiben – ein Prinzip, das er auch in Bezug auf seine Sound-Installation Ayilara für den Berghain-Dancefloor im Rahmen der Ausstellung STUDIO BERLIN anwendet.

Die Musik von Beyond The Yellow Haze war ursprünglich Teil seiner Einzelausstellung No Condition Is Permanent, die 2018 in der Galerie Imane Farès gezeigt wurde, welche Ogboh als gestempelte und signierte Künstlerausgabe selbst herausbrachte. Beyond The Yellow Haze wird auf A-TON als 2×12” LP auf schwarzem Vinyl und digital veröffentlicht.

Emeka Ogboh wurde 1977 geboren. In seiner künstlerischen Praxis setzt er sich mit ethisch-politischen Fragen auseinander. Sein Oeuvre umfasst Sound, Installation, Video, Fotografie, aber auch Essen, Gerüche und Bier. Seine Arbeiten wurden unter anderem auf der documenta 14, der Biennale von Venedig, dem Brooklyn Museum und dem American National Museum of African Art gezeigt. Ogboh lebt und arbeitet in Lagos und Berlin.

Beyond The Yellow Haze is the debut release by Nigerian sound and installation artist Emeka Ogboh on Ostgut Ton sublabel A-TON. Combining subtle layers of ambient electronics, dance music and field recordings from the city of Lagos, Ogboh’s compositions reflect both the Nigerian city’s soundscapes as well as the artist’s increasing immersion in electronic music since moving to Berlin six years ago.

Like his sound installation Ayilara for Berghain’s main floor in the current STUDIO BERLIN exhibition, Beyond The Yellow Haze contains a veritable atonal orchestra of honking, motors, sound systems, sidewalk sales pitches and various sonic artifacts of Lagos’s Danfo bus stations and beyond. These serve as both punctuation and swirling atmosphere within a kaleidoscope of bass and polyrhythms. The unpredictable result is at once place-specific and geographically indefinable. A city in situ – and processed in memory and rhythm very far away.

The recordings were originally included as part of Ogboh’s 2018 exhibition No Condition Is Permanent at Galerie Imane Farès and self-released as a stamped and signed artist edition. Beyond The Yellow Haze will be released on A-TON as a 2×12” LP on black vinyl and in digital formats.

Auf sein Studioalbum New Atlantis, das 2019 unter seinem Experimental-Techno-Pseudonym Efdemin veröffentlicht wurde, folgt Phillip Sollmanns Monophonie – ein Projekt, das sich der Zusammenführung verschiedener Stränge utopischer Musik verschreibt. Sein Ansatz: die Kombination und Rekontextualisierung rarer historischer Instrumente, die im Rahmen der Klangforschung des Wissenschaftlers Hermann von Helmholtz im 19. Jahrhundert entstanden sind, mit selbstentworfenen, mikrotonalen Instrumenten des Komponisten Harry Partch und metallenen Klangskulpturen des Designers Harry Bertoia aus dem 20. Jahrhundert.

Das Ergebnis ist eine psychedelische Forschungsreise in die Welt der ‚Just Intonation‘, oder reiner Stimmung – alternative Stimmungssysteme, die einzigartige Harmonien erzeugen, welche in der heute dominanten gleichschwebenden Stimmung nicht vorzufinden sind. Sollmann platziert diese Klänge in eine rhythmische Umgebung, in der sich kosmisches, Polyrhythmik und akustischer Techno mit mikrotonalem Leuchten monumental in rare Soundflächen verweben.

Im Laufe von neun Stücken untersucht das Album verschiedenen Formen von Minimalismus: Von unerschütterlichen Wiederholungen bis hin zu gepaarten Akkorden und kargen Klangräumen. Sollmann erweitert mit diesem Album das Klangspektrum von Bertoias singenden Metallstäben, Partchs maßgefertigten Orgeln und melodischen Schlaginstrumenten in eine atmosphärische Jenseitigkeit.

Monophonie wurde 2016 komponiert, feierte 2017 seine Uraufführung an der Volksbühne Berlin und wurde anschließend bei der Ruhrtriennale und auf Kampnagel in Hamburg zur Aufführung gebracht. Die Stücke wurden von Ensemble Musikfabrik gespielt, einem der bekanntesten Ensembles für zeitgenössische Musik, sowie Sollmann selbst, der die Doppelsirene von Helmholtz bediente. Das Bühnenbild wurde von Michael Kleine und das Kostümbild von Peter Kisur der Honeysuckle Company entworfen.

Following 2019’s New Atlantis LP under his experimental techno alias Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann’s Monophonie is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia.

The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation – alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. Monophonie recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music.

Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to paired-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch’s custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia’s sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness.

Monophonie was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany’s premier neue musik collectives Ensemble Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz’s original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.
