Press Info:
Stroboscopic Artefacts is releasing its latest addition to the forward leaning edge of electronic music with the Totem series. Unfurling as a chain of transparent 10” vinyls, each of the Totem releases will have a subtly divergent take on the aesthetic space defined by techno and club culture. Totem continues investigations previously established by Stroboscopic Artefacts, namely the relation between sound and material object, spatiotemporality and the architecture of music. The series aims to collapse the artist, their intention and resonance with the public into one object, an artifact of beauty and functionality, the emblemized transparent 10-inch. In choosing a less common format for the Totem series, Stroboscopic Artefacts aims to reinforce the cognition that each of these pressings is a unique object, carrying a message that will develop as the record’s existence moves through space and time.

The productions of label-head, Lucy, aka Luca Mortellaro, will be the first pressed into the icy vinyl of the Totem series. The three-track EP, titled “Tarkomania”, is a circular meditation on specific musical and philosophic themes, and a warm invitation into Lucy’s famously nuanced sound processes. The A-side title track stakes out the sonic territory which the next two tracks will work within: an angular dance floor interlude, “Tarkomania”, builds dark hued mood and texture over one of the spilling monologues of Russian cult classic film director Tarkovsky’s in “Stalker”. The monolog is a probing search for meaning and inspiration within the creative process, a theme that Mortellaro was quick to establish at the beginning of the discourse that will accompany the duration of Totem. “Tarkomania Dub” on B1 takes the listener one circle deeper into the groove filled anxiety set forth in A1, flickering between a set of industrial sounds windows, anchored by the guttural voice of Takovsky’s writer and snippets of the warm and moody synth that accompany the listener throughout the EP. “Tarkomania Acapella” on B2 is a summation of these elements with an emphasis on the “Stalker” monolog. Greater than the sum of its parts, Lucy’s contribution to the Totem series is a succinct, if veiled and mysterious, investigation into the eternal questions that define the artistic process.

Song Of The Woods Nymphs

Press Info:
Charlotte de Witte continues to establish herself as a driving force on the contemporary techno scene with The Healer, her second EP on seminal British imprint NovaMute.

The four tracker comes after the Belgian has fully broken through with a dark, dense and driving sound that is proudly unrelenting. Her meteoric rise has come off the back of a series of huge productions, plus standout sets at key festivals and clubs all around the world.

Charlotte’s fresh and innovative sound is immediately laid bare on opener ‘The Healer’, with eight minutes of spine-tingling, hypnotic techno. The sleek drums and icy hi-hats soon cast their spell, as well-crafted synths unfold up top to bring real emotion. ‘Silence’ is another slice of tunnel vision techno with perfectly designed drums rolling on and synths peeling off the groove. It’s trance inducing and otherworldly, with eerie voices adding to the all-consuming atmosphere.

Then comes ‘Kuda’, a track built on monstrous kicks that hit hard and drive forward with real force. Filtered vocals bring character, and sharp edged percussion grows ever louder to take the track, and the club, to the next level. Last of all, ‘Song Of The Wood Nymphs’ shows another side to the producer with three minutes of suspensory synths and expansive ambient sounds that are filled with drama and tension.

Sequence II (Lars Huismann Remix) Comes with massive bass and some nasty hypnotic tribal.

Sequence II (Kloves Remix) involved an acid sequence out of this space.

Sequence III is the aftermath to 4. An Acid Techno Track with a perfect hypnotic flow.

Press Info:
The Italian dj and producer Viels is the perfect example of a promising artist who has earned his stripes in the scene. His first contribution to Dynamic Reflection was a single track on a VA two years ago. then a solo EP on The Nursery last year and now it s time for his first well-earned vinyl called Distrophism. Although his sound has matured over the years. he has never compromised as far as his straight forward sound goes. Circular. the A1. is the best possible example of that. The continuous drive keeps it going for well over seven minutes. without ever becoming superficial or dull. The B-side extends to other sides of his musical spectrum by making use of more drone-like. hypnotic elements. Beside these three convincing originals. Spanish heavyweight Svreca jumps in for a remix of Circular. completing the variance of styles. Needless to say. this new release. proves that Viels as an artist and this EP in particular. are forces to be reckoned with.

Press Info (English):
Martyn releases new album Voids, his first for Ostgut Ton

Over the past year, Dutch-born, Washington D.C.-based producer Martyn has undergone a metamorphosis – one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation.

Having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, Martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, Detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. However, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to Max Roach’s 1979 ensemble percussion album M’Boom.

In his own words: “That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It’s a project where he works with a slew of top-notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition. Playing this record was such a surreal experience, the first music I consciously listened to after my recovery. I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players.”

Over the next 8 months Martyn would go on to write Voids, his first LP for Ostgut Ton and in a few other ways markedly different than previous records; it features no guest appearances or collaborations and at 9 tracks, is musically stripped down to the essentials. It’s also a highly personal take on forging new paths forward in genres where the Berghain/Panorama Bar resident has long been known for his production wizardry and innovation: post-dubstep and UK garage.

Voids is roughly split between these musical foundations, recontextualized with elements of Nyabinghi, drum ‘n‘ bass, and gqom to form snarling, bass-driven hybrids. The direction was hinted at last November on his GL Outtakes – reworks of his landmark 2009 album Great Lengths. In contrast however, Voids is also an attempt to work through personal trauma and loss, including the passing of close friend and fellow producer Marcus Intalex aka Trevino, to whom the track “Manchester” is dedicated.

The sound of Voids is big and unapologetically rough around the edges. It is music as therapy, drawing on the healing elements of music past, but is far from retrospective.

Indeed, Martyn is no stranger to electronic futurism, as his numerous solo productions for Ostgut Ton, Dolly, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Warp and his own 3024 label (run together with visual collaborator Jeroen Erosie) have shown. On Voids, however, these futuristic sonic qualities coalesce into something darker, more biographical and untethered from expectations.
