(Marco Bruno Reshape)

Press Info:
“made of CONCRETE” henchman Toni Dextor steps down from his usual DJ act to take on a producer role for his first release on the label, joined by the long-serving Marco Bruno and techno legend S-File on remix service.

“Definition” showcases Dextor’s propensity towards winding, glitchinfused techno, in a construction that brings together functional, Russian bits of vocal with deep, spacious rhythms.

A known figure of contemporary techno, DJ and producer S-File channels a stripped back, hollowed down approach on his remix of “Definition”, in a rework that’s filled with gyrating soundwaves on a gritty tech backdrop.

“Upstairs” is the heavy-hitter of the release. A no-frills techno powertune, it commands attention from the first bar and keeps spirits high until the last beat. This one is a quintessential dancefloor tool, sure to get every body in sight moving.

Last one to the table is Marco Bruno’s reshape, taking the anthem into new territories with undulating sequences and added looming synths.

Press Info:
Sun Over Me makes his full debut on the imprint with a very functional and dancefloor focused release. Opening the list is ‘Conducto’, a massive groove beast made to shine at any scenario. The second one is a perfect interpretation by the Kosovian artist Vegim, making the track crazier and dominant. First of the B-Sides is ‘Ars Goetia’, a much more hipnotic piece but yet full of dynamism. Closing the pack is Juan Trujillo’s remix, a very different version of the original, transforming it into a whole new tool. It’s our tenth reference, surely, one to remember.

Press Info (English):
Terence Fixmer’s path through the changing techno landscape of the past 20 years has been anything but direct. Indeed, the French born producer, musician and Planete Rouge label founder has long been influenced by the periphery of continental European dance music subgenres from electronic body music, new beat and acid, before combining them into his own pioneering hybrid of futuristic, EBM-inflected techno with classic releases such as 2001’s Muscle Machine or the collaborative Between The Devil LP with Nitzer Ebb’s Douglas McCarthy as Fixmer/McCarthy.

While the sound in recent years has been rediscovered and recast in diverse contexts by a new generation of producers, Through The Cortex sees Fixmer gravitating toward a different kind of industrial-tinged electronics, led as much (or more) by analogue sequencers, melodies and ultra-saturated sounds of synthesizers than drums and percussion. Across eight tracks at a compact but varied 40 minutes, the LP touches on an aesthetic hinted at in recent Ostgut Ton releases (2016’s Beneath The Skin EP and 2017’s Force EP), revealing a sonic narrative through noisy, screaming synth/vocal riffs with a jagged, guitar-like post-punk sensibility.

Through The Cortex is techno with a voice – or rather multiple voices – guiding listeners through hypnotic, space- and social-themed terrain as a kind of dark soundtrack to darker days. The result ranges from the slow John Carpenter-inspired Escape From Precinct 13 funk of “Expedition” and the patient yet muscular stomp of “Fury” to the mesmerizing Suicide-like pop of single “Accelerate”, where Fixmer, using his voice as an instrument, chants the track’s ambiguous title in an invocation of systemic change/collapse.

Elsewhere, the story is told with more abstract and wailing vocals like on “Shout in A Black Hole”, or in the warm, entrancing chords floating across the stereo image in ostensibly changing time-signatures on “A Halo Somewhere” – the LP’s uncharacteristically kosmische musik come-down. The track, and Through The Cortex as a whole, reflect what can be described as Fixmer’s idiosyncratic take on both techno subgenres as well as the larger pool of electronic music in general. This broad approach translates into a sound that is not only difficult to pin down, but also one that lends itself to multiple listens.

02.
Reversed Effort

03.
Momentum

Press Info:
‘Forced Stillness’ is the third release on CutOff!CutOff!’s imprint RSNTR Rec. which consolidates the label’s profile as a purveyor of dark and experimental leftfield Techno that defies conventions and formulaic approaches. The three track EP demonstrates CutOff!CutOff!’s love for complex soundscapes and abstractions while maintaining a strong focus on the rhythmical foundation.

The title track strays away from a standard four to the floor pattern. Instead, a grinding combination of kick and bass textures provides for a breathless groove. Like a shapeshifter, ‘Forced Stillness’ is ever evolving in a surreal manner without revealing its true form, leaving the listener constantly on edge.

‘Reversed Effort’ starts out with an ostensible firmness only to quickly reveal that the track is rather akin to a moebius band, allowing for no clear orientation. Instead, it is structured by the relationship of the track’s various elements which are in constant flux. Minimalism as induced by Steve Reich and executed in a sinister warehouse sound.

A dichotomy of unstable drones and steady percussion characterizes ‘Momentum’. Polyrhythmic stabs eventually act as a counterpart to the straight beat, thereby adding a peculiar drive to this ride into the unknown.
