Berlin / Dresden based Made of Concrete continue a long string of galvanised club material with a new offering from the auspicious Angioma. Also now based in Berlin – the Lyon-born artist has a penchant for non-conformist art with an anarchistic twist and this is reflected across his project ROOM which encompasses art, music and cross-discipline collaboration.

The stripes Angioma has earned across these endeavours and his approach in the studio slot him neatly into the ‘made of Concrete’ catalogue – as evinced in this, his 2nd offering on the label: ‘Touch and What’ EP.

The EP kicks off with the title track which sets a dense thud through murky, aquatic atmospheres. Synths are submerged and gloomy as the track pushes forward with moody intent. Deftly EQd hats twist and turn as further percussion bleeds into a tense mix – a perfect intensity for an effective warm up.

‘And See’ then follows up with a quicker tempo as a rubbery kick drives through shuffling shakers and panned hats. A hypnotic, head bending melody then creeps in as nifty filter control has the track thicken and thin throughout as he tone is set bubbling without ever boiling over.

‘What Happens’ then plots icy stabs atop another stout kick drum and trimmed, minimal percussion. Frazzled signals and a clever mix down create a rich sense of space as the track continues to open out before Rebar weigh in with their contribution.

Mainstays of ‘made of Concrete’, the duo perfectly encapsulate the label’s canon: bold, sturdy Techno which demonstrates the power of simplicity. Their refined revision lays percolating congas and toms over a persistent stab, computer FX samples and a fizzy kick which rounds another ‘made of Concrete’ EP off in fine style.

Markus Suckut returns with his second EP on ‘made of Concrete’. Named after the Ruhr area, one of the densest regions in Germany, ‘Ruhr’ shows off the mesmerizing skillset and versatility of the producer. His hometown Düsseldorf is one of the three major cities on the Ruhr map and has brought up its very own Düsseldorf-sound within German electronic music, with local heroes Kraftwerk paving the way in the 1970s. The twists and turns of the Ruhr river and the musical paths that electronic music has taken all come together in this EP, which steers from techno to electronica with ease.

While ‘Tunnel’ is a rather straightforward minimal techno banger, the title track ‘Ruhr’ is almost melancholic. ‘At The Park With Friends’ ventures into the realms of ambient. The 5-tracker is accompanied by a technoid remix of ‘Smoke’ by Markus Suckut’s longtime friend Thomas Hessler.

Alexander Kowalski is back on ‘made of Concrete’! On his new EP, he refers the ambiance and smoked-out sounds of Dub techno on all four tracks, revealing his deep and quieter producer-self.

The ‘Reference’ EP doesn’t try to reinvent something good. Instead, it evolves and expands on its theme and chosen genre. It carries Kowalski’s musical energy like water: from the introductory ‘Reference’ with its classic dub delays and ambient sounds, to the unhurried ‘Trawl JD’. The blows and strings of technoid ‘Deep Dive 990’ add drama and dancefloor tension – until it all washes ashore with sound on the beatless finale ‘Drifting Waves’. With this release, Kowalski once again shows his solid skills and the needlessness of proving anything to anyone.

The infamous techno duo Rebar delivers another EP for their label ‘made of Concrete’: ‘Inverted Balance’ dives deep into the billions of neurons that connect our thoughts and identities into a vast network based – like electronic music – on electrical circuits. In the first track ‘Inverted Balance’, the beat hovers like a drone over a dark landscape. Accompanying this flying object is a bass-heavy remix by Vincent Desmont from Paris, France. Track number two ‘Subcutane’ reveals: a gentle headbang.

Although this movement is not enough to satisfy the phat dancefloor energy of the EP’s second track With the ‘Inverted Balance’ EP, the duo adds another release to their label’s concrete-mixing truck load of Techno, Dub, Ambient and Experimental music out of Berlin/Dresden and the world. ‘Next up on Made Of Concrete is an EP from a true label mainstay – part of the lifeblood of the label; Toni Dextor.

Currently based in Berlin – Dextor has also released a slew of releases on labels such as Planet Rhythm, Adroit and Sektor Evolution. Toni Dextor’s productions have always reflected the true ethos and sound of the label and this latest offering is no different.

Also included in the package is a remix from Zürich based Jelena – the branch between the two being her involvement with Adroit.

‘The Focus’ kicks things off with an urgent, wrought iron loop that hacks it’s way through intensifying drums which build towards a mangled and mind-bending breakdown. The pressure doesn’t let up as the tracks charges to it’s conclusion, propelled by a kick as hefty as a mallet that keeps you trapped in a bit-crushed cage.

‘R14’ then follows up with a highly effective, capacious Techno track. With drums as thick as they come – panned, reverberated textures and a consistent stab are suffused with a metallic texture that provides a chilly but highly kinetic energy before Jelena’s remix brings the record to a close.

Her interpretation sets shimmering subs create a buoyant bed for the track – the kick bounces off from it as another pupil-widening sequence wades in. An elongated breakdown reaches it’s zenith before letting go in a manner guaranteed to send the floor into rapture.
