Press Info:
With his latest album, “Energie Braucht Zeit” (energy requires time), composer and pianist Jan Wagner concludes a trilogy of sonic meditations on the theme of loss, centered around the passing of his mother. With this installment, he addresses the concept of time: the foundational element of reality and the force ensuring the inevitable dissolution of all things. He proposes that it is the acceptance of this polarity that not only makes healing possible but also makes it impossible to align yourself with the vital energies within and around you without it. In other words, this music is a big and undeniable yes towards life, wrapped up in eight delicate compositions. Incandescent, full-bodied, tactile – this music oscillates between the gentle, serene, and somewhat spectral; and a rich gradient of forms pulsating, dancing, and ecstatic. The album features guest appearances from violinist Tobias Preisig and spoken word artist AINT ABOUT ME.

“When I started to work on this record, I felt like I had nothing to say. I also couldn’t touch the piano. What I realized was that the grief I felt after my mother passed away was entangled with the sound of the piano. On my first album (“Nummern”), I literally pressed my grief into the keys and made it resonate in the wooden body of this instrument. So every time I played it, I was transported back into that space. Then “Kapitel“, my second album, dealt with the aftermath. But I’ve moved on since. I had nothing more to add to what I had said on my previous records.

What I found was that the background noise, the so-called throwaway stuff of recording, sounded more interesting to me than the sound of the actual piano. In the beginning, I was using all these expensive mics, but eventually, I recorded with my phone or MacBook. Looking back on it, I think that I wanted to experience the distance between me and the piano, literally. So instead of recording the instrument, I started to record the room. And that’s when the record revealed itself to me, and everything started to fall into place. Synchronicities started to occur. For example, with the spoken word track featuring AINT ABOUT ME, I had a feeling I should drop the recording of his vocals into an instrumental composition I was working on at that time, and it worked without any adjustments! And not only that, but it put words to what I was feeling: that it was time to move on. It was not only time to accept the loss and own it but to accept all the beautiful things that life has been feeding me. When you look at the album cover, it’s that. It’s the commingling of tragedy and love, and specifically, this deep love for life that makes the picture complete.” — Jan Wagner

Press Info:
A votive. An object as an offering. An intention. A spell in physical form. Music as a form of invocation. Sound as clay. Moulded, sculpted, manipulated to embody said intention.Magick. Chaos. Turning sound into clay. Clay into earthen-ware. Literally.

“Making use of the term Votive opened a large room for interpretation for me.There is so much that I could argue with, which would be about me (atheism, queerness or feminism) in order to prevent misinterpretation. But I don’t want to limit the interpretation of it by explaining my own personal view.”— Rosa Anschütz

The debut LP from transmedia artist /vocalist/producer Rosa Anschütz is a collection of nine votives presented in sonic and ceramic form (every song has its sculptural equivalent). It’s the result of several years of daily rituals: word collages as incantations, audio sigils created by shaping electric voltages and casting sound into clay. «Votive» is also a highly charged space full of spirit/ emotion, a religious experience distilled from the ecstasies of an agnostic.

“I sang in choirs for a very long time and enjoy hearing multiple voices. I also love the reverb effect you get in a Church, I emulate this using effect pedals and plug-ins. I also use vocal loops like mantras. I can enter into self-hypnosis through singing.” — Rosa Anschütz

«Votive» was produced by Jan Wagner. It took three years for the initial sketches to punctuate in finished songs. The basis for themusicwas created using Rosa’s self-built modular synthesizer, which she describes as an entity full of personality that “reacts on my mood of the day.”The lyrics were distilled from her growing collection of decontextualised phrases, loose poems–oftenwritten on the move– and diary-like entries, obsessively collected over the years. During the production, these word-formations were intuitively combined with the modular soundscapes, and sculpted till they became holistic, well-balanced micro-universes.

“A synthesizer can literally absorb you. It not only has a range of sounds, but also its own personality. I’m constantly changing how I make use of it.” — Rosa Anschütz

Like the material found on last year’s «Rigid EP», these songs are a curious alloy crafted from a range of sonic vernaculars: experimental/noise, coldwave, techno and avant-pop. The space they evoke remains cool and dusky, both airless and cathedral vast. Spoken word pieces are woven in between spectral choral arrangements, the effect is that of hypnotic mantras. «Votive» is far from a neutral experience and there is a clear before and after, once you hear it.

Press Info:
The LA based ambient/electronica artist «Foam and Sand» crafts his hazy and deeply textural music with a variety of sonic sources, including tape loops, modular synths and acoustic instruments.

The project started during the recent quarantine. Confined to his home studio, the artist who releases music under different monikers, started creating self soothing ambient music, for his own peace of mind and as a form of musical therapy first. These new pieces were only shared on Instagram, along with visuals the artist created himself as well: a confluence of colours, shapes and sound. Much like planets circling each other, or cells exchanging molecules, they express the interconnectedness of all things. Soon a following for the project started to grow on social media and after remixing a «Dreaming of Ghosts» track on Robot Koch’s label «Trees and Cyborgs», Foam and Sand now presents his first solo single on «Quiet Love Records».

“Circle 10” is based around a tape loop which goes in and out of phase, revealing its imperfect beauty through the unsteadiness of the old tape. A xylophone, sometimes bowed or hit with a mallet creates a dreamy and film like atmosphere all glued together by analog synth clouds which were also recorded to tape and slowed down, creating a subtle, warm and deeply calming piece of music.
