“How do things come to life? How does meaning appear?” These are questions that have informed Lifestream, the 2019 release by German composer, electronic producer, and classically trained pianist Johannes Motschmann. Conceived as a narrative arc, the album reflected the natural cycle of all things – from birth to death. Meticulously composed and gloriously realised, it succeeded in bringing such overarching concepts to life in rich, vivid ways. A year on, the German musician has invited friends and collaborators to breathe even more life into Lifestream for a new remix EP.
English techno pioneer, Luke Slater and German Berghain veteran, Chris Liebing both chose to remix the title track of Motschmann’s album taking the original tune into their own clubby spheres. Slater, who is a household name in the Brit-techno since the early 90s gave his version of Lifestream an insistent beat under which echoes of piano and other fragments of Motschmann’s track can be heard nostalgically. Liebing, who is a driving force in the German electronic music world with his ever- innovative approach, took the track into a deep and dark world of his own.
“What fascinated me most about Luke and Chris’ remixes was that they both developed the music and its underlying traces in very different ways, so what are actually secondary voices in my track suddenly came to the fore, and the main voices recede,” observes Motschmann of the two reworks. “It’s like a development into worlds of sound in which my music might otherwise never appear – As DJs, Luke and Chris take a different outlook on music making than I do, with my often very theoretical approach. The remixes have given me the opportunity of a new perspective: the composer becomes an astonished listener of his own melodies because they unexpectedly appear in a different context.”
Luke Slater has been responsible for some of the most lauded, richly-textured techno of the ’90s, not to mention numerous left field excursions under various monikers. From his beginnings as a resident at Heaven in London in 1989 and his involvement in the early outdoor rave scene, Luke has quickly become one of Britain’s emerging talents with several seminal releases. Over the past three decades, Slater’s sound has been honed across the globe several times over. He also boasts residencies at the likes of Berghain alongside appearances at about every major club or festival you could think of – from the Dutch forest settings of Dekmantel to the incredible setting of Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.
Chris Liebing is DJ, producer, radio host and the driving force behind the labels CLR and Spinclub Recordings. His sound has continuously evolved during his DJ career, always true to his techno roots. Although his contributions to the field have already firmly established him as one of the field’s great names, Liebing continues to innovate in the DJ booth with a setup more befitting a teenage computer game obsessive as well as releasing new material time and again. He’s known for playing hard, bouncy techno that is inspired by philosophy; always-deep tracks that range from looming apocalyptic landscapes filled with a sense of dread, to more optimistic emotional meditations.

MEGASTRUCTURE_ Proudly presents FLESH RECONSTRUCT, a collection of reworks of tracks of Hakai’s first EP, NO FLESH SHALL BE SPARED.
This series of alternate-universe takes on the originals features four major heavyweights of the techno scene – Inhalt Der Nacht, Phase Fatale, Blush Response, and a rare solo remix appearance from Christina Sealey of Orphx.
Each mix takes a drastically different approach. Inhalt Der Nacht’s remix of INVADING EXECUTIONER features clean vocals from Blush Response, something not heard since 2014. Once buried in the original mix, they are now at the forefront. Next up is Christina Sealey’s mix of ANXIETY, featuring haunting war horns and organic analog grooves, along with new vocal contributions from Hakai member Jagoda Nagel.
Phase Fatale’s mix of NINGEN starts off the B-side with a steady broken beat techno workout. This serves as a perfect transition into Blush Response’s remix of Bury Me Alive, which is a full on noise assault at warp speeds. This one is not for the faint of heart!

Nur Jaber presents Planet OSF, the first instalment of her celestial series launching with a 6 track techno expedition from a collection of beautifully curated producers.
Inviting fresh talent, immensely creative minds, and friends alike, Beirut’s techno import Nur Jaber drops “Planet OSF” on her Berlin based OSF imprint. Enlisting the likes of international & Berlin based producers Eira Haul, KOR, Lesser Of, Truant, Eira Haul & Luca Eck, Nur takes listeners on an otherworldly sonic odyssey.
Nur Jaber opens the record with her own production “Bring Back”, what one might call an ode to what we are all missing. Catalyzing with glistening ethereal keys, a swift melody gradually fuses to the track. Without warning, a deep bassline and crunching distorted kick joins, soon to be layered under a sweet, emotive female vocal that wanes over the driving percussion, restoring the softness to this utopian cut. Following is Eira Haul’s “In The Night”. The Welsh producer delivers a rave-esque track brimming with energy and verging on trance, with all the weight and power of a techno stomper. A chopped vocal sample flies back and forth, while a heaving kick drum provides the foundation. Shakers & hi-hats inject depth and texture, with bellowing organ-like melodies ringing out and demanding focus.
“Early Sunday Morning” is next on the record. Canada’s Truant equips his contribution with an explosive kick drum right from the jump. A heavily distorted indistinguishable vocal bellows ferociously over the drums, instilling a deep darkness to the track. Snares and hi-hats are introduced before all elements are stripped back, allowing major notes to shine through and disrupt the heaviness. The percussion blasts back in with the addition of an acid line to round off, slowly building to crescendo. Young Berlin talent Luca Eck provides an emotional contribution in, “When The Rain Washed It All Away”. A hurried pace is commanded by a perfectly weighted kick drum and subtle percussions, while gentle melodies and the baseline dance effortlessly together, evoking true emotion from the listener. There’s a perfect balance of melody, while still remaining firmly club friendly.
Turkish producer KOR delivers blistering techno roller “Requiem”. Beginning with short stabbing synth notes, a resounding kick drum is gradually layered over. Snapping hi-hats and cymbals ring out, cutting through the density. A synth melody plays gentle, long notes before everything builds to climax. To finish, he doubles down on the melody, transitioning the cut into a wailing warcry, backed up by bass and percussion. Closing out is “Awaken From A Dream” from London producer Lesser Of, who sets the tone of the track with sinister high pitched drones that wistfully howl and circle. Heavily distorted percussion dances throughout until thundering kick drums take control, with a powerful bassline that wrestles with the drones before warily fading to close.
