Info :
It is with great excitement that Big Deal unveil details of their eagerly anticipated debut album Lights Out, released on 29 August, and new single Chair, out on Mute on 22August 2011 in addition to a series of dates that includes a very special show at the Tamesis Dock, a converted barge on the Albert Embankment, London, on 24 August.

With the strum of an acoustic guitar set against the fuzzed out chords of an electric guitar and the tones of a boy / girl vocal, the band announced their arrival in the summer of last year. Since then Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe have been making waves with their tales of teen angst and adult compromise.

Lights Out, co-produced by Underwood and Dean Reid, emerges from its bedroom beginnings as a collection of 12 deeply personal songs with universal appeal, innately tapping into the innocence, insecurity, wonder and (sometimes unrequited) love and lust of relationships. The album opens with the nostalgic sweep of the Distant Neighborhood, a blissful, sun-kissed introduction. The raw, confessional Talk perfectly illustrates the push-pull of relationships, Seraphine is enchanting in its deep reflection while Homework is achingly beautiful in its schoolyard simplicity. Locked Up, a wall-of-sound swoon fleshed out from its early recordings, could well be one of the most raggedly affecting love songs this year. Overall, these are songs which are structurally sparse yet emotively rich, sweet and seductive yet raw and jagged.

To coincide with the release of the Lights Out, Big Deal release a new single Chair, a highlight from an album brimming with potential singles. Bringing together electric fuzz and acoustic sheen, the track is a bittersweet 3 minutes about longing to take a crush to the next level, centred around the poignant lyrics: “You don’t trust me to sit on your bed / Put me on a chair in the corner instead.”

Info :
Marcel Fengler doesn’t mess around, and neither does he with his productions. Released in May last year, his “Thwack EP” showcased the kind of pulsing, throbbing techno sound that few other producers can equal in intensity. It was a perfect match for Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver imprint that continues a fresh and consistent release schedule of heavy, driving techno records. Whether marked by their distinctive “Berghain sound”, their relentless intensity, or simply their affinity for the dance floor, Mote-Evolver’s releases remain unmatched for their quality. Now, having gathered together
some of the most seasoned techno producers, Mote-Evolver presents four remixes of Marcel Fengler’s “Thwack.”

The “Thwack Remixes” EP starts off with Norman Nodge’s percussive and dubby re-working of “Thwack”. Tense yet subdued, Nodge balances contrasting elements that bring the original recording into unseen new territories. Following second on the A-side is Luke Slater’s remix as Planetary Assault Systems, which expands upon the intensity of “Thwack.” Layered with thick, heavy bass, the PAS remix grabs hold with its entrancing low frequencies as well as its screeching and howling effects.

Mike Parker contributes his remix of “Thwack” on the B-side, which uses fuzzy effects and pulsing bass to create an atmospheric re-imagining of the track. Intriguing and mysterious, Parker’s remix charges the dance floor with an electric-like current ready to be struck by metaphorical sonic lightning.

The digital release includes an additional remix by LB Dub Corp, the moniker used by label-boss Slater for his deeper productions. Swirling and hypnotic, LB Dub Corp’s remix uses the pace of the original track and adds a bouncing bassline that rumbles forward, just as engaging as the original release.

out now: S.C.U.M – Amber Hands [Mute]

Artist:
S.C.U.M

Title:
Amber Hands

Label:
Mute

Cat#:
MUTE453

Release Date:
18th July 2011

Format:
vinyl & digital

Tracklist:
01. Amber Hands
02. Fountains
03. Amber Hands (Silver Apples Remix)
04. Amber Hands (Sonic Boom Remix)

Info:
Recent signings to Mute, S.C.U.M are set to release a brand new single on 18 July 2011.

“Amber Hands”, recorded in London with producer Ken Thomas (known for his work with David Bowie, Clock DVA, The Cocteau Twins, Psychic TV, Sigor Ros, Dave Gahan), comes backed with mixes by Sonic Boom and Silver Apples and exclusive track “Fountains”. Available on 12? and digital download, this is the first single to be lifted from the band’s forthcoming debut album which is due for release on the 9th September.

Based in London, S.C.U.M exploded onto the music scene two years ago with the release of their debut single ‘Visions Arise’. The single, together with their exciting and intense live shows, quickly grabbed the imagination of fans and critics alike. Since then the band have toured extensively across the UK and Europe to a growing fan base.

S.C.U.M are Thomas Cohen (vocal), Bradley Baker (machines), Samuel Kilcoyne (moog), Melissa Rigby (drums) and Huw Webb (Bass). If you like Mute artists of the second generation: Samuel Kilcoyne also known as “Sammy 7” is the son of Barry 7, former member of the Mute act ADD N TO (X). He was also a protagonist of the “underage” scene in London that got a big public attention a few years ago.

The band sounds like a contemporary version of Joy Division blended with the echo chambered pop appeal of Hurts. Dark and majestic.

After supporting The Kills in May, S.C.U.M will play some more shows e.g. at the Mute nights in Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris (see tour dates)
