The frosty melancholy of Citizen // Nowhere is reworked by London producer Manni Dee into something altogether monstrous. Introducing itself with a kick drum powerful enough to level a warehouse, and only getting more urgent from there forward, Dee’s remix blends a knowing rave glint in the eye with a nonetheless uncompromising stance.
The Copenhagen-via-Moscow producer Anastasia Kristensen immediately justifies her status as a rapidly rising talent on the scene, locking into a delicate yet no less powerful groove for her sparkling remix of Glitter. Seamlessly heightening the almost meditative qualities of Avery’s original, she weaves a blissful rhythmic trip, taking in razor-sharp percussions and spectral dub techno.
A longstanding fixture on the Midwest US rave scene, Patrick Russell applies his typical grit to ‘Song For Alpha’s firmly dancefloor focused centrepiece, Diminuendo. In subtly shifting the focus to the track’s passages of overwhelming feedback, he sculpts a black hole of snarling electro and piston-like breaks, sure to prove an inviting wormhole to those willing to surrender further, deeper and darker.

NovaMute is delighted to welcome Fidelity Kastrow to the label, introducing Berlin’s rising underground techno siren with her first NovaMute release, the ‘Daughter Of Darkness’ EP.
Specialising in spinning emotional, energetic, high-intensity techno, Fidelity Kastrow has DJed at Europe’s leading club nights and festivals and co-presents the weekly radio show Berlin Soul, which is broadcast globally.
For her debut NovaMute release, each of the three darkly melancholic, driving and highly original tracks have been tested, tweaked and perfected at Sisyphos’ cavernous main room Hammahalle, where Fidelity spins monthly as one of the Berlin club’s leading residents.
“’Daughter Of Darkness‘ and ’The Huntress’ are intuitively inspired by that Sunday daytime vibe, where it might be daylight outside but people like me prefer to hang out in dark, industrial cave-like warehouse spaces, sweat and shuffle their dusty feet alongside other like-minded souls. ‘Wolf Clan‘ on the other hand is a track that is more inspired by my other perspective of the dance-floor when I’m standing behind the decks as the DJ. It’s more driving, building and peak-time friendly, a track to raise the energy and hopefully get some arms in the air.“
This is NovaMute’s first release for 2019, and Fidelity Kastrow’s EP follows a recent relaunch and releases from Charlotte de Witte, Terence Fixmer, ANNA and Nicolas Bougaïeff. The label, a subsidiary of Mute (Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, New Order, Liars, Erasure, Moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the UK.
Originally presenting white labels and imports, NovaMute went on to release records by Plastikman, Speedy J, Juan Atkins, Luke Slater and Joey Beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as Tresor and Probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience.
The ‘Daughter Of Darkness EP’ artwork has been made by London visual artist Dan Hillier.

NITZER EBB and Mute have announced details of the first in a re-release campaign of the band’s catalogue on vinyl and CD that will cover the world outside North America. Body of Work, a compilation originally released in 2006, will be available for the first time on vinyl on 8 March 2019, as a limited edition 4-piece set on red and white vinyl.
Recently named one of the “most influential artists in music today” by the Guardian in 2018, the recently made a return to live performance with the original line up of Bon Harris, Douglas McCarthy, David Gooday and Simon Granger, performing to sold out shows in London and Berlin at the end of last year. The band have announced several dates for 2019, in Germany, Belgium and at the Infest festival in the UK in August – with more dates to be announced.

NITZER EBB und Mute haben Details einer Re-Release-Kampagne des Bandkatalogs auf Vinyl und CD angekündigt. Zunächst erscheint “Body of Work”, eine Zusammenstellung, die ursprünglich 2006 veröffentlicht wurde und am 8. März 2019 erstmals auf Vinyl erhältlich sein wird – präziser gesagt, als limitierte vierteilige Edition auf rotem und weißem Vinyl. Die Band, die zuletzt von The Guardian als eine der “einflussreichsten Bands zeitgenössischer Musik” bezeichnet wurde, kehrte 2018 im Original-Line-Up um Bon Harris, Douglas McCarthy, David Gooday und Simon Granger zurück und trat Ende letzten Jahres in London und Berlin auf. Nitzer Ebb haben zudem mehrere Termine für 2019 angekündigt, in Deutschland, Belgien und auf dem Infest Festival in Großbritannien im August. Weitere Termine werden noch bekannt gegeben. Für Mute nahmen sie das kanonische Proto-Balearic-Techno-Album „That Total Age“ (Mute, 1987) auf, darauf die Klassiker „Murderous“, „Join In The Chant“ und „Let Your Body Learn“. Dem Album folgten in den nächsten Jahren mit „Belief“, „Showtime“, „Ebbhead“ und „Big Hit“ vier weitere einflussreiche Werke.
Nitzer Ebb verkauften allein in den USA weit über 100.000 Platten, tourten mit Depeche Mode und beeinflussten wegweisende DJs und Produzenten wie Richie Hawtin, Darren Emerson, Sven Väth, Helena Hauff, Objekt, DJ Hell, Tom Stephan, Danny Tenaglia sowie Bands wie Smashing Pumpkins und Nine Inch Nails. Sie trennten sich 1995 erstmals, fanden aber zu seltenen Liveauftritten immer wieder zusammen. 2010 veröffentlichten sie das Album „Industrial Complex“.

LP5 is Apparat’s first release since 2013’s Krieg und Frieden (Music for Theatre), and follows two studio albums, II and III (Mute / Monkeytown) by Moderat, the trio he founded with Modeselektor’s Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary.
Sublime and delicate, the album finds greatness in small things and in unexpected twists; it joins musical fragments together and glows from the cracks in between. For Ring, it is also a document of artistic insight and autonomy. “I was only able to make the record this way because Moderat exists,” he says. “Having a huge stage with Moderat gave me a setting for grand gestures and meant I could unburden Apparat from these aspirations. I don’t have to write big pop hymns here; I can just immerse myself in the details and the structures.”
Still hymnic, LP5 doesn’t rely on dramatic gestures and theatrical amplification, instead it lives off delicately sculpted sounds crackling alongside filigree beeping and twitching.
Like previous Apparat albums, the new release sees Sascha Ring collaborate with cellist Philipp Thimm and on the album you can also hear trombone, trumpet and saxophone, a harp, a double bass and other strings. Tracks were developed over endless group improvisations and lavish orchestral sessions – some of these sessions are only apparent in the final mix as fluttering echoes, just barely noticeable. The album was recorded in Berlin at AP4, JRS, Vox-Ton & Hansa Studios, mixed by Gareth Jones and Sascha Ring.

LP5 ist Apparats erste Veröffentlichung seit dem 2013er Album „Krieg und Frieden (Music for Theatre)“ und folgt den letzten zwei Studioalben II und III (Monkeytown/Mute) von Moderat, jenes Trios, das Apparat zusammen mit Gernot Bronsert und Sebastian Szary alias Modeselektor gegründet hat.
Fragmente einer Sprache der Liebe Es zittert und blitzt, knistert und treibt, man kann zart aus der Dunkelheit strahlende Wolken erahnen, hoch droben am Klanghimmel brennt ein elektrisches Feuer. Schließt man die Augen, sieht man langsam tanzende Lichter; doch beginnen die Pupillen zugleich zu flackern wie in einem hektischen Traum. Ruhe und Bewegung sind in dieser Musik kein Widerspruch mehr; sie kreist in sich selbst und treibt aus diesem Kreisen doch immer wieder Melodien und Motive, Bilder und Rhythmen hervor, die aus dem Ohr nicht mehr fortgehen wollen.
Seit fast zwei Jahrzehnten gehört Sascha Ring zu den prägenden Protagonisten der elektronischen Musik in Deutschland. Unter dem Namen Apparat hat er wie kein anderer die Verschränkung zwischen programmierten Klängen und analogen Instrumenten erkundet und variiert; in dem Trio Moderat (das er gemeinsam mit Gernot Bronsert und Sebastian Szary alias Modeselektor gegründet hat) hat er sein Wissen und seine Kunst in eine Ästhetik des Schwelgens und der Erhabenheit überführt. Das neue Album, das er uns nun als Apparat schenkt, ist erhaben und zart zugleich. Es findet Größe in kleinen Dingen und in unerwarteten Wendungen, es fügt musikalische Fragmente zusammen und leuchtet aus den Rissen dazwischen: Ohne Frage ist dies Sascha Rings bisher bestes Werk.
Für ihn ist es auch das Dokument einer künstlerischen Erkenntnis und Autonomie. „Ich habe die Platte nur deswegen so machen können, weil es Moderat gibt“, sagt er: „Weil ich in dieser Band eine große Bühne besitze und ein Medium für die großen Gesten – darum konnte ich Apparat als Projekt von diesem Anspruch entlasten. Ich bin nun sicher: Ich muss hier keine großen Pophymnen schreiben; ich kann mich in die Details versenken und in die Strukturen.“ Hymnisch ist diese Musik trotzdem, aber sie lebt nicht von der dramatischen Geste und der dramaturgischen Eskalation, sondern von zart ziselierter Klangknisterei und filigranem Fiepen und Fitzeln. Auch im Vergleich zu den bisherigen Apparat-Alben ist sie gleichsam komplexer und minimalistischer geworden. „Ich wollte eine kleine Platte machen“, sagt Sascha Ring, „das habe ich auch allen Beteiligten gesagt, dass sie nicht groß denken sollen. Pathos ist verboten!“
Beteiligte gibt es zuhauf: Wie die letzten Apparat-Werke, ist dieses wesentlich aus der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Sascha Ring und dem Cellisten Philipp Thimm entstanden; es sind aber auch Posaune, Trompete und Saxofon zu hören, eine Harfe, ein Kontrabass und andere Streicher. John Stanier, der wilde Watz von der Matherockgruppe Battles, spielt Schlagzeug; endlose Gruppenimprovisationen und opulente Orchestersessions liegen den Stücken zugrunde – auch wenn man sie oft nicht mehr zu hören bekommt oder nur als flatternde Hallfahnen im Wind.
Denn die Musik von Apparat: Das ist jetzt eine Musik des Anreicherns, des Weglassens und der Überschreibung; jede Melodie, jeder Sound ist zugleich ein Palimpsest.„Manchmal“, sagt Sascha Ring, „haben wir hunderte von Spuren aufgenommen und hinterher alles wieder auf ein paar Dutzend reduziert“. Doch sind diese „paar Dutzend“ so delikat ineinander verflochten, als ob es sich um Samples handelt, die man aus dem Zusammenhang reißt und wieder in einen neuen Zusammenhang wirft. Man hört hier jemandem zu, der auf das Eigene blicken kann wie auf etwas Fremdes, das es sich immer neu anzueignen gilt: Ich ist ein Anderer in der Musik von Apparat.
Vieles, was ganz einfach klingt, ist auch ganz einfach. Anderes ist hingegen hoch kompliziert. Harmonien entstehen und zerstäuben und finden sich wieder zusammen. Klänge verklumpen und verwehen in Wolken und flirren wie in einem pointilistischen Bild. Ein und dieselbe Melodielinie wird auf verschiedene Instrumente verteilt und wandert durch den Raum wie ein irisierender Schweif: endlose Verwandlung, unaufhörliches Werden; eine Kunst der Metamorphose, die doch nie in der Beliebigkeit endet oder im Chaos, sondern eine neue Form der inneren Geschlossenheit findet; eine Geschlossenheit, die sich weder aus klassischen Songstrukturen speist noch aus den Repetitionsprinzipien der elektronischen Musik. Es ist vielmehr eine Geschlossenheit, die aus dem Werden erwächst und aus dessen Weigerung, sich zu etwas Endgültigem zu runden. Die Musik, die Apparat uns auf diesem neuen Werk bietet: Das ist Musik, die uns ins Offene führt.
