About the concept:
Here is the ninety-eighth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers. or released on a label (and its sublabels. and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Kontinum’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by Edit Select.

About Kontinum:
After moving to Leipzig from his hometown Lübeck in 2015, the trained drummer and experienced musician quickly developed a fascination with the impulsive energy and dissociative feel of the music he experienced at Leipzigs’s prime techno club Institut fuer Zukunft. This affinity drove him to start the now renowned Nebulakollektiv in 2017 and consequently establish himself as a local DJ landing gigs at Institut für Zukunft and Distillery.

He released on Circular Limited, Lowless and Oslated and more recently also joined the roster of the NovaFuture family with the track “Narkonon”.

About Edit Select:
Tony Scott has been producing electronic music since the early nineties under various pseudonyms, He established the Edit Select project, as well as its eponymous label, in 2007, focusing on atmospheric yet stripped-down, back-to-basics techno tracks for club use. Several 12″s appeared, including releases on labels like Ostgut Ton and Figure, as well as remixes for the likes of Speedy J, Chris Liebing, and VCMG. Edit Select’s debut full-length, Phlox, appeared on the German label Prologue in 2014. During the same year, the artist released an edit of Teste’s classic 1992 track “The Wipe.” Collaborations with Dino Sabatini and Mike Parker followed, as well as singles on CLR, Dreiklang and Semantica. In 2016, Edit Select and Antonio Ruscito released the deep, spacy collaborative LP Visitors – Projections. The following year, Edit Select’s The Bridge EP was released by Soma, which had previously been home to the majority of Scott’s earlier work under the name Percy X, including three full-lengths and nearly two dozen singles. Shortly following 2018’s Horizon EP, the label released the full-length Cyclical Undulations, easily the most expansive, accomplished Edit Select work to date.

Kontinum About His Choice:
I choose Edit Select for my episode because for me his minimalistic and driving sound is the epitome of a dissociative sonic experience.

The idea of creating a set by only using his tracks went around in my head for a long time so I’m very happy to be able to finally implement it.

[Mix]: Jan Wagner – NovaFuture Blog Mix April 2020

DJ:
Jan Wagner

Introduction:
Jan Wagner is a pianist and producer. With his personal work he explores a simplicity of expression, one that maximises the emotional truth of each composition. He’s fascinated by the music hidden beneath the surface: overlapping overtones, textures and the sounds created by the piano’s intricate mechanism (clicks, creaks etc). Over the years, Jan mixed a whole lotta records for Berlin-based techno label Ostgut, which might explain his inclinations towards minimalism and the unwavering commitment to a sonic efficiency and immediacy. He’s been working at the legendary Faust Studio Scheer, alongside Hans Joachim Irmler, for over a decade. He can also be often spotted at the Hitipapa Studio of Pola Roy and Judith Holoferenes. Jan’s debut record entitled Nummern was released on Klangbad and Quiet Love Records.

About the concept:
Here is the ninety-seventh instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers) or released on a label (and its sublabels) and creates a nice mix from it.

About Sekulahr:
Sekulahr is an Istanbul based DJ/producer and a well-known name of the local techno scene. He is also the co-founder of Vast Perception collective/label and, has been organizing events to contribute to the development of underground techno scene in Turkey since 2017. He first came into contact with music during his early childhood years by starting to play his mother’s old classic guitar and, thereafter he had a chance to perform several genres such as blues, funk, jazz and rock in various bands till he met techno music during his late college years. Since that time, his perception of music has been enlarging and, he started to aim at finding/creating his own sound. In his performances, he is focused on building dense industrial atmospheres blended with offbeat elements and powerful low ends.

About VSK:
Francesco Visconti, better known as VSK, is an Italian techno dj and producer, born in Rome in 1986 and based in Berlin.

Since his earliest youth he has had a huge passion for electronic music, and through hanging out at the famous record store from the Capital “Remix”, he was introduced to the world of djing when he was only 16 years old.

He has got familiar to different forms of techno, his style ranging from a sound usually very hard and dark, often with industrial influences, to a very different one, deeper and more mental, both still easily recognizable as coming from the same mind.

At the same time he met the artist Ken Karter, who introduced him to the world of production and mastering. He began an education as an audio-engineer and sound-designer, in music and especially in television, working in different recording studios; currently he does this alongside his artistic career.

In 2010 he and his friends Conrad Van Orton and Vilix started their own label “Consumer Recreation Service”, which got immediate support from big names in the international techno scene, currently he has been handling “CRS ltd” series, focused on a darker and more industrial sound.

Over the years he has released music on many other important labels such as “Ear To Ground, Sonntag Morgen,Genesa, Planet Rhythm, on which he has an important collaboration with the Italian icon Giorgio Gigli, “Silent Age Ep”.

In 2016 he also signed an extended six-track Ep with Conrad Van Orton on Developer’s imprint Modularz (USA) and in 2018 on historical SOMA records under the name of

“Symmetrical Behaviuor”.

In 2017 he started performing live, both individually and as part of a duo with the Serbian artist Scalameriya. This collaboration brought to several relevant releases on the British labels Power Vacuum and the legendary Perc Trax, as well as leading to their appearance in the MORD box 002.

At the same time he took part in the latest VA on the amazing “47” label along with Ancient Methods, OAKE and the label owner Tommy Four Seven. He also signed 47’s third solo Ep, following those by Headless Horseman and Killawatt.

[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Manuel Münster plays René Pawlowitz

DJ:
Manuel Münster

About the concept:
Here is the ninety-sixth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Manuel Münster’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by René Pawlowitz.

About Manuel Münster:
Sometimes, one experience is all it takes to give someone’s life a new direction. This certainly proved true for Manuel Münster. Manuel, attracted to Berlin’s allure of countless possibilities and open-minded attitude towards alternative lifestyles, made his move to the German capital in 2008.

Manuel’s musical socialization was rooted in hardcore punk and metal, but shortly after arriving in Berlin and visiting his first techno party, he quickly immersed himself in a world that was beyond his initial musical tastes. Taking advantage of Berlin’s countless record stores dedicated to electronic music, he assembled a respectable collection of 12″s and decided to give DJing a try himself. Progressing from playing small bars and parties, he became a regular DJ at Tresor from 2011 onwards.

In 2013 Manuel further shaped Berlin’s techno footprint by hosting his own club nights called “Escapism” throughout the city. The record label of the same name emerged in 2016 with the help of a friend, providing a platform for his peers and fellow artists to release music that shared the same philosophy of Münster’s. Staying true to techno’s political element, Manuel’s DJ-sets are reflective of his perception of the world surrounding him. While mostly bleak and repetitive, groove is always the essential driving force of his sets. It is this focus that allows him to connect to, challenge and inspire his audience.

About René Pawlowitz:
René Pawlowitz – better known under his moniker Shed, Is one of the most respected techno artists in the industry today. Born in Frankfurt, René first got interested in electronic music in the early 1990s, by 2002 he had moved to Berlin and founded his own label Soloaction Records with the support of the iconic Berlin record store Hard Wax.

On his own label he released his fist EP as Shed ‘Red Planet Express’ in 2004. 2008 saw the release of the first album ‘Shedding The Past’ which went on to be named album of the year by Resident Advisor. Since then René has cemented himself as an evergreen producer with releases on a number of household labels including Ostgut Ton and Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint to name a few, adding to his impressive work under alias including Head High and The Higher.

whether it be through track selection in his DJs sets or the raw power of his live show, Shed manages to merge rough dance floor skeletons with detailed melodies, harmonic structures and airy arrangements for an evocative performance that isn’t easily forgotten.

Manuel Münster About His Choice:
Shed’s productions have been a constant companion ever since I dove into the Techno scene in 2008. Though it is a tired cliché, Berghain and Panorama Bar were influential during those early days of going down the rabbit hole. Naturally, I spent a lot of time listening to Marcel Dettmann’s „Berghain 02“ and Cassy’s „Panorama Bar 01“ mixes back then. Both mix-CDs feature Shed-tracks that are still among my favourites, two of these also made it onto this mix (the Luke Hess-remix and „Well Done“). They proved to be an influential cornerstone of what was to come after and sparked my interest in Shed’s productions.

During this mix’s preparation, I was pleasantly surprised by how many Shed-records I own. Even after settling on the final running order, I came across more Shed-records in my collection, some of which I had forgotten for a long time. Compiling this mix was a trip down memory lane, reminiscent of my first years in Berlin, that I thoroughly enjoyed. I hope you enjoy listening to it just as much!
