Cristian Vogel reprises his NEL alias for his sixth outing on EPM as he presents ‘NEL and The Instrument of Shapes’, an EP featuring two new tracks from the electronic maverick.

Cristian Vogel is a long-term innovator in the composition, mixing and performance of electronic sounds. Spanning over 30 years in the vanguard of international electronic music, his work has been acknowledged as an outstanding influence in the fields of composition for stage, club culture and studio. His numerous album releases have graced such esteemed labels as Tresor, Mille Plateaux, novamute, Shitkatapult, Sub Rosa and more recently his own Endless Process label.

His studio work as NEL is a departure from his more experimental album and sound design compositions and while these will continue, NEL tracks bear a closer resemblance to Cristian’s earlier production style, delivering tougher beats and rhythmic textures primarily using Modular synths in a hands on, improvised live-to-tape process.

‘The Instrument of Shapes’ sees Cristian bury himself back into the deep grooves of dub techno with wonderful subtlety and sound craft to create a slow burning cavern of sound whilst ‘Stepping Stones’ is a more carefree and loose modular affair that flits across bass and dark electronica with scant regard for a regular beat.

Cristian Vogel reprises his NEL alias for his fifth outing on EPM as he presents “NEL Adventures”, an eleven track compilation album featuring tracks from his four previous NEL EPs and two brand new productions in the shape of “Gullane” and “Earthsea”.

Cristian Vogel is a long-term innovator in the composition, mixing and performance of electronic sounds. Spanning over 25 years in the vanguard of international electronic music, his work has been acknowledged as an outstanding influence in the fields of composition for stage, club culture and studio. His numerous album releases have graced such esteemed labels as Tresor, Mille Plateaux, novamute, Shitkatapult, Sub Rosa and more recently his own Endless Process label.

His studio work as NEL is a departure from his more experimental album and sound design compositions and while these will continue, NEL tracks bear a closer resemblance to Cristian’s earlier production style, delivering tougher beats and rhythmic textures primarily using Modular synths in a hands on, improvised live-to-tape process. “The sound is characterized by analogue rhythms, textures and beats with an improvised flow”, says Cristian.

Tracks such as the statically charged “Tyrkisk Peber” deliver hot and peppery techno notes like its sweet namesake whilst this is juxtaposed by the shimmering expanse and brightness of “118 Days”. Then we have tracks like the minimal techno twangs of “La Fortuna”, the expressively structured “Mirabelle”, sweeping and spacey “Shadowgraphs” and “Orchid” with its gentle tonal stream.

Finally of note we have two brand new NEL / Vogel compositions exclusive to this release. “Gullane” is a linear groove, twisted by modular bumps into an organic dancefloor tease whilst “Earthsea” delivers glitch, dub-techno perfection and simply highlights yet again that Cristian Vogel is a master craftsman of electronic music.

So, here it is again. Cristian Vogel’s usual mind-blowing brand of high end, highly sophisticated and nuanced self-production. His songwriting and technical abilities build on over 25 years playing out and inventing sounds. When a producer like him gets to a position of defining their own sounds and styles, then it’s going to be hit after hit. Thats what ‘Rebirth Of Wonky’ represents. An exemplary power to re-define ourselves through music, through creative pursuits, through love, through imagination and through the politics of musical progress.

Cristian Vogel’s 25th album started off as a blueprint for a new style. Research and recording began in March 2020 and was completed in October. Musical styles used to emerge from complex synergies unfolding within people and spaces as a certain music embraces them and shapes them. What happens to an audience, and what happens in the studio are linked through style and identity. This album, like so many in 2020, has been crafted through solitude, anxiety and hope. Audiences are distant, yet still yearn for music in their lives. On the other hand, many creators are virtually erupting as a need to be heard. It remains to see what dancing synergies and styles will bloom in 2021 and beyond. We are sure that the ‘Rebirth of Wonky’ will be one of the defining post-clubbing albums of the year.
