Info (English):
With big hitters such as Beat Dis, Bomb The Bass helped mould late 1980s acid house. Their linchpin, Tim Simenon, has led the group through a number of different incarnations, painting vivid pictures of modern culture on the albums ‘Clear’, ‘Unknown Territory’ and ‘Into The Dragon’.

More recently Bomb The Bass have settled as a duo, vocalist Paul Conboy providing lyrical complements to Simenon’s continually inventive productions. The duo have made arguably the best work under the moniker, with guests from Mark Lanegan to Fujiya & Miyagi (‘Future Chaos’), then a successful co-production with Gui Boratto (‘Back To Light’).

Simenon and Conboy return in 2013 with new single Wandering Star and album ‘In The Sun’, both on Simenon’s new imprint O Solo Recordings, and will take their vividly inventive electro on tour.

Info (German):

Back To Light”) erfolgreich zusammengearbeitet.

Info (English):
A whole evening of contemporary dance which has been set up by three different choreographers is in need of three different sound producers. That’s the set-up of “MASSE”, the sound underlying the gesamtkunstwerk. “MASSE” as a whole event has been triggered by renowned state ensemble Staatsballett Berlin and Club Berghain right in the centre of the german capital. Plus there’s even more to it: The Staatsballett and Berghain access new territory by staging “MASSE” at the huge “Halle am Berghain”, a former combined heat and power station besides the club. The painter Norbert Bisky has been chosen to create the stage design. At the core of the dance night lies a tryptichon made out of pure sound: the music of Henrik Schwarz, Dettmann | Wiedemann and DIN was taken as the starting point for developing the choreographies.

Henrik Schwarz – Balletsuite #1 – Masse
Henrik Schwarz opens his suite with “Unknown Touch”, a dense exposition made from acoustic guitars and pizzicati strings floating on an atmosphere. The subsequent tracks let the bass lines wander amongst throbbing electrified guitars, both characterized by their clearly structured arrangements. Creating a narrative break a synthesizer cuts into the groovy moves of “But Then I’m Different”, accompanied by a sighing violin. To top things off in the final track of “Balletsuite #1 – Masse” a dreamy and summing-up house piano is aired. The solo piano ends with a quiet closing sequence slowing down the keys more and more to a final nothing.

Dettmann | Wiedemann – Menuett
Marcel Dettmann & Frank Wiedemann are also close associates of the Ostgut Ton family and are in charge of the second part, “Menuett”. Theirs is a 25 minutes long sonic-tryptichon: “Accelerando” sounds like two space observation centers having a chat, while “Martellato” is juggling the filters until the polyrhythm somehow transform into a circling movement. A syncopated beat and some shrewd filters bring light into “Spiritoso” – like fundamental electronic research into sound.

DIN – EVOLVE
DIN are Efdemin (Phillip Sollmann) & Marcel Fengler who created this new alias for “MASSE”. Similar to Dettmann | Wiedemann, the Berlin musicians utilize ever new parts of their machine park to create musical abstractions. Out of the humming virginal cosmos of “Creation” & “Variation” mid-range bass drums take shape until they poke a rattling rhythm pattern. In a similar way “Oscillation” first takes a bath in the primeval soup until the drums of an unheard-of tribe are arranged by an invisible hand to engineer a gentle flowing movement. This progression becomes more delicate in “Division” & “Generation” until it unwinds at the stage of “Conclusion” to fade out as a nocturne, urban touch. Given the different aesthetics of the producers that built “MASSE”, it’s uncanny and a pleasure to hear how its music as a whole shapes a fine sonic entity.

Henrik Schwarz – Balletsuite #1 – Masse

Arcade

02)

03)
Intern

04)
Somewhere

Info:
Mote-Evolver welcomes back Psyk (aka Manuel Años) after his strong label debut release, Distane. For his second Mote-Evolver release, Psyk delivers yet another standout effort with four tool-oriented tracks of clean, tight, yet po- werful minimalistic approach.

The title track “Arcade” that opens the EP contrasts high-energy thumping drumbeat with a hypnotic layer of syncopa- ted rhythm. Its movement and development is subtle and organic, but at the same time skillfully elevates the energy with joining clapping beat and hi-hats. Following “Surface” will stay in your mind with its obsessive singularity of mo- notone balanced with the groove of muted heavy beat. It’s a moody number that grabs the listeners’ attention with certain tenacity that stays throughout the track.

One might find B-side of Arcade EP slightly funkier; “Intern” is meshed with lighter elements like beeping sounds and clapping, adding refreshing vibe to the EP. However the carefully crafted dynamic and the simple, pure, and fun personality of “Intern” assures that it’s no less powerful tool for the dancefloor. The last track “Somewhere” is perhaps the grooviest track of Arcade EP, thanks to the deep dark dubby bass that’s setting the tone properly from the very beginning. Psyk tames the high energy into a relaxed atmosphere for “Somewhere”, giving a breathing room for emo- tion that draws you deeply into the euphoric moment. With Arcade EP, Psyk is clearly not shying away from showca- sing his skill of honing the diverse mood and texture of highly functional techno.

Info:
In the last few years German producer Markus Suckut has built quite a following, thanks to his distinctive, raw and reduced modern techno sound. After several singles on the label, Markus now announces his debut full length, ‘DNA’, on Figure.

Rather prolific with his output of 12”s and remixes, Suckut’s previous releases on Figure stood out, with tracks like ‘Hunt’ on Figure SPC M really developing his command of intensely focused and powerful kick drums. A true follower and advocate of the more refined side of club techno, he has recently set up his own SCKT label, and travels more and more as a DJ.

‘DNA’ now goes even further in making a statement on his sound. There’s something of the classic German minimal techno lifeblood flowing through this album, and over 11 tracks (8 on the the double vinyl release) we are guided through very precise, tense and effective exercises in basement techno minimalism.

From the moody synths of ‘Path’, a fitting intro to the album, we are then dropped head-first into ‘Dissociation’ where only a handful of elements resting on a weighty kick drum build a certain sci-fi tension. This tension is maintained over the course of the whole album.

Heading into more trippy zones, ‘Dust’ and the acidic jack of ‘Rigid’ both demonstrate Suckut’s skills at telling a story with a very strict economy of elements. As paranoid tension establishes itself as a major theme further still, ‘Shatter’ unfolds in a dreamy, if not rather apocalyptic dub track of the highest order.

‘Doomed’ presents a brief respite from the tunneling bass frequencies, as serene synths float across a smokey backdrop, but then it’s back to business as ‘Stranger’ takes us deeper into the fog with its tripping beauty.

The more aggressive thump of ‘Vibrant’, with its urgent synth voices and dramatic arrangement are pure Suckut – taught, carefully executed and intoxicating on the dancefloor. We are then guided into a more heady, psychedelic mood with ‘Remains’, before the true dub of ‘Places’ eases us down, working glorious space between the groove. Finally the last stand arrives in the form of ‘Mirage’, where an undulating acid line and freakishly- timed percussion shake and rattle around a wonderfully submerged throb.

Markus Suckut shows us his true colours and talents with ‘DNA’ – a very focused, mature and honest portrayal of his take on techno for 2013 and beyond.
