Press Info :
Her previous releases for Ostgut Ton, „Kill Me“ feat Elif Biçer, „24 Hours“ which was featured on Tama Sumo’s Panorama Bar mix, or the mysterious „My Room“ for the „Fünf“ compilation, all served as fantastic introductions to Steffi’s sound. What’s more her collaboration as part of the Third Side project on Restoration indulged in her more raw tendencies. Now with her debut artist album, „Yours & Mine“, we discover an even further developed producer in Steffi.

She shares with us her personal journey. A long period of intense experimentation and self-discovery led to this sensitive, instinctive and extremely insightful long-player.

Carefully mixing old and new, warm analog synth and drum textures flow in unison with modern studio finesse over nine tracks, each telling its own story. Ethereal, hypnotic passages and positive, uplifting messages to the dancefloor meet temperate, slow-building vibes and heart-wrenching moments. Often simplicity blurs into satisfying complexity. Moments of sheer joy arise against the backdrop of a rich and elegantly controlled exploration into her own sound.

The opening track „Lilo“ is a soothing, harmonious forecast of this wonderful deep dance music album; swirling, and reduced. A warm solid state thump drives it however, and it becomes clear that the beauty in Steffi’s house music lies in this meeting of classic, emotion-drenched melodies and bold, earthy drums.

The tactile „Piem“ rises and climbs with a strong late-night intensity before „Yours“ featuring Virginia comes to the fore. Steffi recently collaborated with Virgina on the excellent „Reasons“ EP for Underground Quality, and now her smooth and distinctive voice shines in this powerful recording. Virginia’s vocal talents have already seen her working with other respected figures like Steve Bug, Abe Duque and Butch. Striking a clever balance between positive, addictive pop and and straight up club energy this vocal led future-classic is a loud and proud testament to how far Steffi has come. Not only as a producer, but as a DJ who understands the need for balance, control and of course release!

Perhaps an ode to the many foundations of house that have no doubt inspired Steffi, „Arms“ is a string-led jack track, a slow burner in the best sense, and all the better for it. Similarly „Manic Moods“ sells itself on the strength of its handful of carefully crafted analog synth lines, slowly fusing to become one while her beats urge us forward.

The urgent, sci-fi tones and extended, soaring strings of „Mine“ bring it back back to the club as heady images of warehouses past, present and future flash before us. This retro-futurism is then taken further with the muscular „Nightspacer“, whose NY house roots are fleshed out by blossoming pads and an unstoppable throbbing, traveling vibe.

Drawing the album towards its close, the deeply spaced „You Own My Mind“, featuring Virginia’s beautifully smooth vocals washes over and wraps around us in a calming and gently melancholic blanket of colorful sound.

Deeply personal to the last, „Moving Lips“ could be that special last embrace; one more moment to end the night and yet keep us longing for more. At the heart of it a clear and powerful theme emerges, reminding us that we have all been through this together, for the better.

out now: Michel De Hey – Blackbird (incl. Pig&Dan Remix) [Circle Music]

Artist:
Michel De Hey

Title:
Blackbird

Label:
Circle Music

Cat#:

Release Date:
16th February 2011

Format:
12" and digital

Tracklist:
01. Blackbird
02. Blackbird (Pig & Dan Remix)
03. Haai Jack)

Info :
As one of the internationally most successful techno artists and probably most successful DJs and producers of the Benelux Michel De Hey is well known for his high quality techno sound worldwide. And the founder of EC Records, Hey! Records and Immaculate, where he supported artists like John Digweed, Paul Kalkbrenner, Tom Middleton, Funk’D’Void or Adam Beyer convinced on Circle Music with his linear “Sintrack EP” in 2009 already. In late 2010 he is back with the next outstanding release on Circle Music, “Blackbird” with interesting remixes of Cocoon’s Pig & Dan and Circle Music’s newcomer Daniel Bortz (for the Digital Version)

“Blackbird”:
Michel begins with small but kicking beats paired with a dark rumbling bassline. Fastly some mind grueling psycho sounds combined with sick laughs disturbs any bright mood. Michel, who moreover had a few chart hits in netherland lays the focus on conventional techno atmosphere: dark and hard driving. For this reason the classic techno high hats are a really nice bonus.

“Blackbird (Pig&Dan Remix)”:
Cocoon act and founder of the Sonic Society imprint, the duo Pig & Dan takes it serious. With their well balanced arrangement led by the strong rolling bassline they are bringing some fun back to the dancefloor. With Love Parade like synthesizer sounds and kidding organ stabs Pig & Dan who also released on Yoshitoshi or Boxer in 2010, spread some true spirit on the dancefloor.

“Haai Jack”:
With its fluffy percussions arrangement the track “Haai Jack” is definitely placed in the tech house genre. Exciting sound experiments doesn’t take it too serious with the music by building a curious and entertaining but pumping arrangement. Michel De Hey shows us the self-depreciating side of his music.

Info :
Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver label rounds off an impressive 2010 and starts 2011 by passing into record label maturity with a 21st release. As is fitting for such a landmark release, the forever-progressive Slater has plucked a special release from the ether that will impress and intrigue followers of Mote’s approach to undergroundtechno.

Shrouded in anonymity, Shifted’s release is fuelled by a personal passion for techno, this 3-track EP for Mote-Evolver represents an earnest expression of creativity from an enigmatic artist; freed from the restrictions of expectation and reputation.

Opening up with the kind of sparsely constructed but highly incendiary deepspace-techno that has characterized much of Mote’s recent output, Drained is a thumping bass-driven ride through sinister moods and scratchy sounding effects.

Polaron brings an abrasive feel to the release, contrasting with the deeper moods found elsewhere on the EP, as heavy beats and mechanical percussion provide momentum while resounding chimes and shrill stabs add frenetic drama.

Futuristic and hypnotic, Bound combines the pacey dynamism of snappy rhythms with mesmerizing atmospheric loops which weave together to create a shifting melody; oscillating subtly against a backdrop of relentless percussion.

Info:
Ostgut Ton releases this unique compilation of music crafted from field recordings made inside the two Berlin clubs Berghain and Panorama Bar. The concept and original recordings were made by the Berlin based producer Emika. Over a period of two months Emika created the recordings in the clubs while they were closed to the public and edited them into a library of sounds. The library was then given to all the Ostgut Ton artists, but also to club associates like DJ Pete aka Substance, Dinky, Cassy, Margaret Dygas, Ryan Elliott and Scuba using his SCB alias, to make music with. This release marks the celebration of the label’s five year anniversary. Emika’s idea started from feeling the whole building resonating from the music being played, which lead to the question: which sounds exist here when there is no party? Intrigued by stories of how the club spaces and sound systems influence the resident DJ sets and productions, Emika was curious to explore what music could be made from the building itself. Berghain’s sound technicians Krischan Makswitat and Silvio König, helped to record the entire light rig including the strobe lights, which in itself sounds techno. Other interesting sources to record were the large cooling rooms used for storing thousands of drinks in bottles. The ventilation systems in these rooms make incredible sub frequencies mixed with the sound of the bottles vibrating against each other. The club also contains large swings made from metal which creak and moan at the slightest of movements. In total the library comprised over four gigabytes of sounds, and the artists were not given restrictions on how to make music from the library. The tracks on this compilation consist of each artists signature production aesthetics and feature debut solo productions by our residents Fiedel (one half of seminal Berlin based outfit MMM), Boris and Prosumer’s long term production partner Tama Sumo. All together this release highlights the special and inseparable relationships between the label, club space, and collective of artists.

Press Info:
Having made a debut on Mote-Evolver back in March, Finland’s Samuli Kemppi returns with another stunning EP of ultramodern techno on Luke Slater’s imprint. One of the key players in Finland’s techno scene, Samuli Kamppi reputation for making forward-thinking, boundary blurring electronic music that blends the best of the past with cutting edge sounds has seen Samuli appear on labels as diverse as Ovum, Siesta, Komisch, Prologue, Perc Trax and Octopus; illustrating perfectly why Samuli’s style has consistently drawn attention from all corners.

Quantum Mechanic’s leads off this four-track EP. Inspired by the abstract ambience of the late night / early morning club experience, this is a deeply hypnotic voyage through bubbling acid patterns and swaying string melodies.

Complex Numbers retains this feeling of meditative otherworldliness but ups the ante with a challenging arrangement of animated, complex percussive rhythms that run energetically over a solid foundation of throbbing low-frequency bass.

Luke Slater makes an appearance via his Planetary Assault Systems moniker; drawing out a tense and incendiary Dub Edit of Quantum Mechanics that evolves the original into a sparse, futuristic-sounding, acid-soaked mechanical haze.

Linear Function closes out the EP with a poignant yet impactful piece. Playing with the contrast between light and dark, the track transitions from iridescent melodies and ebbing strings to disorientating off-key harmonics and back again.
