Info :
Being Germany’s Gateway to the World, the port city Hamburg always had a special affinity to America. So, it’s not surprising that Peter M. Kersten aka Lawrence has a deep musical and spiritual relation to the Detroit Techno aesthetics for more than ten years now. His label Dial Rec, which he runs together with Carsten Jost, stands more than almost any other European address for the value-conscious cultivation of high-quality melancholy Techno. After seven albums under his producer aliases Lawrence and Sten, Kersten now continues the perfection of his sound vision also as a DJ in a congenial way.

“Timeless” is far away from the dictate of the dogmatic obligation to currentness that DJs have to face nowadays, but celebrates electronic dance music as a timeless sensual component. With instinctive certainty, Kersten covers 16 years of living club history without ever losing the sight of the acoustic ‘here and now’, or even becoming the slightest bit anachronistically nostalgic. Instead, under his sensitive hands, milestones of minimalized Deep House like “Forever Monna” by Chez Damier, Ron Trent and Stacey Pullen (1995) or the 1999 club hit “Overcome” by Thomas Melchior/Baby Ford come together with contemporary and intensive hommages to Detroit Techno like Smallpeople & Rau’s “Life Aquatic”, Delano Smith’s “My Life” or Pigon’s fantastic Dub Tech romance “Beatmatching” from the 10-Years-Anniversary compilation of Dial Rec in a wonderful way. Besides that, the mix features such well-known names like Aril Brikha, Isolée, the Ifach Collective and Robert Hood, before Roman Flügel sets a wistful final chord with “Brian Le Bon”, a track based on Duran Duran’s masterpiece “Save A Prayer”, and Plaid finishes the mix with the crystalline “OI” from their classic album “Not For Threes” (Warp).

Lawrence’s mix literally breathes the serenity of a light-flooded Sunday morning somewhere between a modernist city and a wood glade, and thus gives his global artistic approach a suitable dimension.

Press Info:
“Workshops” is a new experimental series of releases by Phil Kieran and Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J).

The idea behind this project is to explore the recording techniques used in the middle of the 20th century and dating right back to the mid 1950’s. Famous inspirational places like ‘BBC Radiophonic Workshops’ in England and ‘Philips Lab’ in Holland have seen some of the most innovative production techniques, experimenting with the first use of stereo, modular synths, found sounds and reel to reel tapes. The end result was always something space age and promisingly futuristic and still to this day fresh sounding, crisp and exciting.

Phil Kieran and Jochem Paap have decided to use this inspiration to effortlessly accomplish marrying the past, present and future in an innovative mix of old ideas with new. As Phil Kieran explains: “We want to try and create our sound source from a vintage palette, and then take it into something very high tech, we recorded some of these first ideas at Jochem’s studio in Rotterdam. I feel like we are only scratching the surface and I am so excited to really dig deep with this idea”.

The first Issue of ‘Workshops Vol.1 EP’ consist of three flowing tracks with an inimitable organic and atmospheric appeal.

A1: ‘Paint and Chemicals Dept. Dub’ is the most dance floor focused of the bunch. A dense and hypnotic bass drum blended with sublime layers of echoing soundscapes.

B1: ‘Wood and Organic Dept’ starts off with a pendular bass which melts with drippy spaced out sounds to create a blissful audiocity through vintage sounds and time.

B2: ‘Wood and Organic Dept. Dub’ the heavy cousin of B1 which leads back to the dancefloor with its raw industrial frequency build-ups and an uncompromising massive bass drum.

The digital only passengers of ‘Workshops Vol.1 EP’ completes the picture:- Paint and Chemicals dept’ adds a trippy analogue feel to the A-Side. Whereas ‘Paint and Chemicals dept digital bonus’ is the fraternal twin evoking a deeply `Kubrickesque’ atmosphere with its virtuoso sound dispersion.

A perfect start for this promising new collaboration between two wizards of music knowledge who share a vision about pushing music with technology!

02)

Info:
One of the founding members of the Ostgut Ton family, Marcel Dettmann recorded his debut 12″ for the label alongside Ben Klock with “Dawning” some five years ago. Now after a stringof highly praised releases, his debut album “Dettmann”, and a handful of uncompromising records on his own MDR label, we arrive at this new EP for his home label.

Launching us into the space-race, “Barrier” documents those tense moments of discovery as we reach into new territories. Dettmann’s unique textured sound design sets the scene before diving into “Translation One” – a frantic, quivering and snaking snapshot into the kind of Techno the producer stands for these days. Metallic bass spins sideways, while evermodulating percussion drives forward.

The sinister sci-fi tones of “Translation Two” warble and jive in glorious syncopation as a systematic heavy kick and hat program works the bass frequencies and rhythmic zones. Open and spacious, its meandering theme hangs deliciously between paranoia and positivity.

In “Planning” Dettmann further explores his inclination for intricate, tripping synth patterns. A staggered, wonderfully immersive theme builds from delayed staccato notes in a classic analog sequence, underpinned by rumbling dub bass pressure.

Info:
Mote-Evolver continues to push on into uncharted territories of electronic music with the ‘Parallel Series 1’, the first in a new series where 2 artists are featured side by side – contrasting and complementing. A dedicated producer with over than a decade of experience, British born ASC goes head to head with Luke Slater’s rather rare L.B.Dub Corp guise over 4 tracks of vivid new techno.

ASC’s textural, earthy and spacious ‘Slow Burn’ does exactly that. Building from reduced layers of paranoid percussion and hot fragments of sound, he creates a bass heavy world of machine funk that leans pleasingly towards more abstract zones. The somewhat brighter ‘Transit’ floats on a bed of liquid reverb, punctuated by jittering percussion, digital interference and brooding deep atmospheres. Certainly a trip into the outer limits, ASC’s uncompromising sound continues to grow.

L.B.Dub Corp is Luke Slater’s alias geared towards dub influenced jams which straddle house, techno and more experimental zones. Heavy on the static, tape delay and freaked-out melodic elements, what comes across initially as a carefully restrained DJ tool in ‘Lurcher’s Dub’, reveals itself to be an inspired fully-electronic jazz jam of sorts. The more grounded ‘Native Dub’ laces a rubbery bell line amongst carefully placed layers of delay as elements build,
then disintegrate with addictive hypnotism.

Review (5/5 stars):
“Slow Burn” by ASC is sick tool to push the audience from one side of the dancefloor to the other. A lit bit angry?

“Transit” by ASC is filled with brigther sounds. Something to reduce the speed.

“Lurchers Dub” by L.B. Dub Corp … is frisky with a slight note of Jazz.

“Native Dub” by L.B. Dub Corp .. is dubby at all.

Definitely another MOTE release I love. I guess Mote-Evolver will be my techno label of the year in 2011.

The Messenger – continuous DJ mix

Press Info:
The Planetary Assault Systems project has been active for some 15 years now, channeling an exploratory theme into cutting edge, non-conformist techno for the clubs but also for listening at home. His previous album for Ostgut Ton, “Temporary Suspension”, re- instated that classic P.A.S sound and found the dextrous artist touring even more with this tougher, purist techno aesthetic.

And yet again Slater maintains his prolific output with the announcement of “The Messenger”. In his own words it’s a project that stays very true and honest to the Planetary Assault Systems goal: a journey of discovery, to create new sounds which are not otherwise present in club music at this time.

From the album’s beautiful introduction track “Railer (Further Exploration)”, which floats through the bubbling ether before leading into the mysterious depths of “Beauty In The Fear”, it is clear that Slater’s role as sound explorer and adventurer has been dutifully fulfilled. With the sense of timing that can only be expected from such an experienced DJ and musician, we are led through a series of stand out tracks, where no one feels less pure, yet each has their own voice.

Indeed there’s a strong club element present here – Slater play-tested all the tracks and employed a careful editing process to make sure they all fit the description. Highly playable works of club-intended sound art, early heavy moments like “Bell Blocker” or the playful “Wriss” give way to even more severe messages as “Kray Squid” pulses onto the radar with magnetic energy. The drum barrage of “Rip The Cut” speaks directly to the dancefloor, perhaps the most rhythmically intense moment of the album, which is not to be put lightly as the rolling, filtering tones of “Cold Bolster” and “Black Tea” urge us further into perfectly frenetic moments.

“The Messenger” is a great tribute to all true explorers out there, striving to find enlightenment or chasing what Slater describes as the “undamental wave”.

Review (5/5 stars):
Planetary Assault Systems are back with a new album on Berlin’s famous techno label Ostgut Ton

And once again it is a masterpiece. Starting slowly in the eastern atmosphere the system engine gets more and more power and rings the bells to rip cuts.

Great stuff…. looking forward to see the performance at the record release at Berghain.
