Initial Berlin is a Berlin based record label and our vision is to remain independant and detached from the current market. By interacting with several fields of creation, we are defending an open-minded techno faithful to itself and its origins.
The records will be avialable only via bandcamp, some selected online records shop and a variety of stores in multiple international locations chosen by hand.

With U-TON 06 we welcome Berlin born and based Nitam as a new artist on Unterton. His first release as a producer is a collection of tracks that were all created during various recording sessions in the last year – the Retold EP immediately gives a clear impression of Nitam’s versatile production style.
Besides their functionality as club tracks the cuts on this EP are also filled with melodic emotiveness. Whereas the record as a whole gauges dark, vibrating spaces, its subtle details bristle with musicality: be it the gradually building layers of melody (“Retold“), the strikingly euphoric vocal snippets (“Value Time“), the chilled synth lines (“Exiam“) or the meandering sound pads (“Neotyp“); be it the modulating rhythmic structures, the dry percussion slaps, the straightforward milling bass drums or the late 80’s, early 90’s inspired House elements – U-TON 06 does not follow a single, rigid masterplan and should please Techno and Breaks devotees alike.

Mit U-TON 06 begrüßen wir den Berliner Nitam als neuen Künstler auf Unterton. Seine erste Veröffentlichung als Produzent ist eine Zusammenstellung von Tracks, die phasenweise, ausschließlich im letzten Jahr entstanden sind – die Retold EP vermittelt gleich einen guten Eindruck der Versatilität und musikalischen Bandbreite Nitams.
Neben ihrer Funktionalität als Club-Tracks schwingt bei Nitams Produktionen eine gewisse Dramatik und Melodiösität mit. Während die Platte als Ganzes dunkle, vibrierende Räume abmisst, steckt die Musikalität im Detail: Ob sich sukzessiv aufbauende Melodieschichten („Retold“), euphorisch wirkende Vocal-Fetzen („Value Time“), kühle Synth-Lines („Exiam“) oder sich mäandernd-überlagernde Flächensounds („Neotyp“); ob modulierende Rhythmik, trockene Perkussion-Slaps, geradlinig walzende Bassdrum oder vom House-Sound der späten 80er und frühen 90er inspirierte Rhythmen – U-TON 06 folgt keinem festgelegten Masterplan und dürfte sowohl dem Techno- als auch Breaks-Aficionado gut gefallen.

CNTRT001 marks the beginning of Samuel & Hayley Kerridge’s record label. Much like their renowned Berlin event series of the same name, the label will provide a platform for new & old talent, supporting artists to stand alone and to be individual.
The first release comes from Kerridge, already establishing himself with critically acclaimed releases on legendary labels Downwards, Blueprint, and Horizontal Ground.
‘Always Offended Never Ashamed’ is Samuel’s most personal recording to date. Spanning over 7 tracks, his own vocals are prevalent throughout the entire LP. Thrashes of guitar adjoin steely percussion, showing restraint and elegance in the process. Electric pulses wreak havoc on the senses, with earth shuddering bass & kicks providing the raw physicality which has become synonymous with his work.

Berlin-based DJ and producer Steffi returns with her second album Power Of Anonymity on Ostgut Ton.
“I wanted to start working on my new album without any personal or external expectations and I was seeking an emancipated, unshackled approach in the album’s construction. I intended to include Electro and IDM elements as these are my roots: it’s the music that I first started djing. After almost 20 years I got the feeling that I’ve come full circle, so I wanted to make an album that I, as a DJ, would like to carry in my record bag.
My first LP – Yours & Mine (Ostgut Ton, 2011) – is very conceptual, it has a certain vibe that not only fits the club but also works on a stereo or in the car. Power Of Anonymity is much more about how I see the dance floor these days, and my aim was to take that vision into the studio. I asked myself what would happen if I could produce day after day without DJ gigs and travel interrupting my flow. These long stints in the studio allowed me to divide my time into three single blocks: initially I would only do jams and make sketches, followed by a phase for arranging and editing all recordings, and then a mixdown period for the album. Concentrating on creating Power Of Anonymity has inspired me to carry on tapping deeper into my creative vein. I’m looking forward to the next time when I can step into the studio. Being focused is the key.”

The new approach to her songwriting and production sees the 40-year-old Steffi being as on point as ever. Power Of Anonymity features laid-back, melodic cuts like “Pip”, “Fine Friend” and the break-heavy title track next to more straightforward, hypnotic dance floor pieces such as “Selfhood”, “Bag Of Crystals”, “JBW25” and “Bang For Your Buck”. Besides her solo instrumental productions, Steffi’s collaboration with longtime friends Dexter and Virginia on the uplifting, percussion-driven vocal track “Treasure Seeking” is the icing on the cake.
Just like “Power Of Anonymity” as a single piece of music, the album itself lives on an industrial-resonating structure of 808s, crisp synth stabs, pulsing staccati and dark, percussive drumbeats. With her second album Steffi recalls classic, landmark Detroit Electro, while creating her very own modern, retro-futuristic sound.

DJ und Produzentin Steffi veröffentlicht ihr zweites Album Power Of Anonymity auf Ostgut Ton.
„Ich wollte die Arbeit an meinem neuen Album ganz ohne Erwartungen von außen oder meiner selbst angehen und suchte nach einer emanzipierten, befreiten Herangehensweise für den Aufbau der Platte. Zudem wollte ich Elemente aus Electro und IDM aufnehmen, denn da liegen meine Wurzeln: Das ist die Musik, mit der ich aufzulegen begann. Nach fast 20 Jahren habe ich das Gefühl, wieder an meinen Ausgangspunkt zurückzukehren. Deshalb wollte ich ein Album machen, das ich – als DJ – gerne in meiner Plattentasche hätte.
Meine erste LP – Yours & Mine (Ostgut Ton, 2011) – ist sehr konzeptuell. Das Album hat einen bestimmten Vibe, der nicht nur in den Club passt, sondern auch zu Hause oder im Auto funktioniert. Power Of Anonymity entspricht viel eher dem, wie ich heutzutage den Dancefloor sehe. Mein Ziel war es, diese Vision ins Studio zu überführen. Ich fragte mich, was wohl passieren würde, wenn ich Tag auf Tag produzieren könnte, ohne durch Reisen oder DJing in meinem Flow unterbrochen zu werden. Diese langen Studiosessions erlaubten mir auch, meine Zeit in drei Abschnitte zu unterteilen: Anfangs machte ich nur Jams und Skizzen, darauf folgte eine Arrangement- und Bearbeitungsphase aller Aufnahmen und schließlich der Mixdown des Albums. Mich auf die Arbeit an Power Of Anonymity zu konzentrieren hat mich inspiriert, meiner kreativen Ader noch freieren Lauf zu lassen. Ich freue mich jetzt schon auf meinen nächsten Studioaufenthalt. Der Schlüssel ist, zielstrebig zu sein.“

Mit dem neuen Songwriting- und Produktionsansatz legt die 40-jährige Steffi treffsicher nach. Auf Power Of Anonymity stehen lässige, melodische Stücke wie „Pip“, „Fine Friend“ und das breaklastige Titelstück neben geraden, hypnotischen Tanzflächentracks wie „Selfhood“, „Bag Of Crystals“, „JBW25“ und „Bang For Your Buck“. Abgesehen von den Solo-Instrumental-Stücken sticht Steffis Kollaboration mit ihren langjährigen Freunden Dexter und Virginia – das erhebende, perkussive Vocal-Stück „Treasure Seeking“ – als wahres Sahnehäubchen heraus.
Genau wie „Power Of Anonymity“ als einzelnes Musikstück lebt das Album als Ganzes von einer Industrial-nachhallenden Struktur aus 808s, spitzen Synth-Stichen, pulsierenden Staccati und düsteren, perkussiven Drumbeats. Mit ihrem zweiten Studioalbum erinnert Steffi an klassischen, bahnbrechenden Detroit Electro während sie gleichzeitig ihren ganz eigenen, modernen und retro-futuristischen Klang entwirft.
