Tracks:

Gral

B1.
Ebene

B2.
Siechtum

Press Info:
Unequal is a label founded by Anselm from Frankfurt am Main in 2015. Ranging from deep, spaced out analog techno to more droning, industrial rough sounds, the aim is to give an impression of whats going on in the FFM underground these days. Sophisticated broken beats and modular synths are essential for this project. Unequal means not to be just one specified style but an open-minded platform to express a diverse view of music within the techno genre.

With his first EP called “Gral”, Anselm delivers some cold, moody techno tracks with spherical soundscapes as an connecting element. The title track on the A Side is a journey through wide open extramundane synth layers and bubbling acid drops covered by a voluminous bass. B1 is a bit more conventional one with driving hi-hats and slightly jacking beat whereas B2 is four-to-the-floor trippy stripped-down minimalism for the heads.

Press Info:
The somatic effects of different impulses are often unclear until the moment they are experienced. However, the way these impulses are processed and guided towards their final area of effect is remarkably similar in many cases. Even if you consciously try to reenact a certain event by exactly following previously taken steps, the outcome is seldom the same.

Each frequency becomes an impuls, which flows through our axons until they reach our most affective areas, where translation and interpretation take place. It is interesting to look at the microseconds between the impuls and its translation: a moment of pure objectivity, without interpretation or judgement. In that moment, music is exactly the same as any other vibration in the air. It is our interpretation that ultimately compels us towards the repetitive ones we call rhythm.

Format:

Tracks:
A1.
Kyu

B1.
Shitau

B2.
Zen

Press Info (English):
Strength lies in calmness – and vice versa. Marcel Fengler offers three new inspirited and detailed musical pieces that protrude from the club context just as well as cater for your home stereo, picking up on the diverse musical moods defined by his debut album Fokus (Ostgut Ton, 2013) while concentrating on intertwining sound aesthetics.

With “Kyu” laid out on the A-side, this new 12″ starts off with a delicate yet muscular floor-pleaser – its subtle 4/4 rhythm is counteracted by lush claps on 2/4, but the true finesse comes in form of its varying rhythmic details, crisp hi-hats and underlying, subtle melodies, most notably the twirling organ trills, sustained synth pads and alienated shout outs.

“Shitau” on B1 picks up on these introverted and adoring musical moods with more organic bell percussion and swelling synth layers adding a more cinematic touch to the complex rhythm patterns—then pausing for a short dreamy break, gaining speed again before culminating in a grand finale. “Zen” follows up with intimate string arrangements until Fengler varies the tone and tempo with tribalist percussion and a lush kick drum.

This EP is an ideal companion, whether you’re pruning your bonsai or branching out a club set.

Remark NovaFuture Blog: This EP will be now released on Index Marcel Fengler

Info:
Following his hallucinogenic dancefloor EPs ‚Dust’ and ‚Green Man’ for R&S, Alex Smoke returns with his latest opus ‚Love Over Will’, a suite of perfectly crafted electronica, brimming with layers and texture that mixes depth, euphoria and social commentary in equal measure. As with his 2011 release under the Wraetlic guise, Love Over Will sees Menzies further exploring the melding of his voice with intricate electronics and discordant melody.

„The human voice is the ultimate transducer of emotion” he explains. „I feel it, I sing it, the listener hears it, the listener feels it. Even the slightest vocal can carry a heavy emotional current. Adding words is creating another layer of meaning again, sometimes altering, sometimes reinforcing the intrinsic feeling of the music.”

The title ‚Love Over Will’ is a play on „Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will”, the central tenet of Thelema, created by famed occultist and ceremonial magician Aleister Crowley, with the central thread of the album being „a statement on the times we are living in, but with an optimism relating to ways forward that are possible”. Also Menzies’s work has been informed by his ongoing installation work with artist Florence To, primarily on the links between sound and spirituality (ritual music, psychoacoustic effect).

The album’s palette of other worldly strings, distortion, clicks and synths acts as a bed for Menzies’ voice, calling to mind the emotive fragility of Arthur Russell, at times confessional, others loudly declamatory – ‚Love Over Will’ is unquestionably Menzie’s finest work to date.

On the subject of the artwork: ”Finlay McKay is an old friend and a high-end photographer. I gave him the album, the title and some background and gave him free rein to come up with the image. The album title relates to Thelema, Crowley’s religion for the new age, and Fin’s artwork has clear links to magical thinking. The use of nudity also has something to say of our attitudes to it. Why should nudity and sexuality be shameful, whilst someone being graphically murdered is considered ok? The artwork is a response to the album but also chimes perfectly with the age we live in.”
