Justin Strauss has been part of the fabric of New York club life since 1980, when he started DJing at the Mudd Club. Over the following decades he worked through rooms like the Ritz, Area, the Tunnel and Centro Fly, building a reputation as one of the city’s most consistent presences behind the decks. In parallel he established himself as a remixer and producer with a wide reach, working with acts ranging from Depeche Mode and Tina Turner to LCD Soundsystem and Beyoncé. Before any of that, he was the frontman of Milk ‘N’ Cookies, the cult glam-pop group that signed to Island Records in the mid-seventies and found itself caught between glam and the first wave of punk.

“Restart” came together in London, at the Relax & Enjoy Studio that Joe Goddard shares with fellow Hot Chip member Al Doyle. Goddard and Strauss have a working history, having collaborated alongside Marcus Marr as Extra Credit, and the session moved quickly. Goddard had an 808 running. Strauss suggested slowing it down considerably and distorting it. They built up bass lines and synth parts between them, with Goddard adding his own synth line.

As Strauss recalls: “The current state of the world was weighing heavy on mind which in turn inspired the lyrics, which I just started writing down as the track was playing. Recorded the vocals and added some live percussion the same day and the track was done. We were both really happy how it turned out.”

The release comes in three versions. The original carries the weight of that session directly, the distorted 808 at its centre and the lyrics grounded in the moment of writing. Goddard’s remix extends the track, bringing his characteristic sense of layering and movement while staying close to the original’s mood. The instrumental version of the remix gives the production space to make its own case.

Chris Liebing’s collaboration with Daniel Miller, Pascal ‘Stubbleman’ Gabriel and Terence Fixmer, aka The Alte Stuben Modular Ensemble, ‘Entangled Circuits’, has been remixed by Hayden Payne, better known as Phase Fatale. Originally released on Chris Liebing’s ‘Evolver’ LP earlier this year, the remix will be released via CLR 20th November 2026. The original track is a collaboration between Liebing and The Alte Stuben Modular Ensemble made up of Mute founder Daniel Miller, Pascal ‘Stubbleman’ Gabriel and Terence Fixmer. New York-born, Berlin-based Phase Fatale has held residencies at Berghain, Brooklyn’s Merge and Tbilisi’s KHIDI, and has built a catalogue across Ostgut Ton, Dekmantel, Jealous God and his own BITE imprint, carrying a lineage that runs from New York’s cold-wave underground through to the sharper industrial edges of Berlin’s club circuit.

Phase Fatale rebuilds ‘Entangled Circuits’ around a hypnotic bassline, pitching the original’s synth stabs up a notch.
Weighted kick drums, relentless repetition, and industrial texture anchor the rework in techno mastery, delivering a peak-time weapon without loosening its grip on the source material.

Nookie and Binary State reshape Renegade Soundwave’s “Thunder” into a beautifully unpredictable rewire, driving it forward with muscular breakbeats, rolling low end and bright, spiralling electronics. For much of the track, it feels firmly rooted in the club: taut, propulsive and steadily building, with melodic details flickering across the rhythm and soulful vocal flashes adding lift and atmosphere.

Then, just when its direction seems established, the track takes a remarkable turn. The drums fall away and a full, expressive vocal emerges from the haze, opening the music into something warmer, deeper and unexpectedly emotional. A blues-soaked guitar then answers the voice, carrying the track into a cinematic final passage that seems to arrive from another world. It is a genuinely special ending—bold, human and completely unexpected—that transforms a powerful electronic workout into something far more memorable.

Renegade Soundwave are one of the most influential and innovative acts to emerge from the UK’s late-1980s electronic underground. They refused to recognise genre boundaries, blending sound system culture with heavyweight bass, breakbeats, house, industrial textures, punk attitude and dub production to create a sound that was years ahead of its time. Landmark releases including The Phantom, Ozone Breakdown, Women Respond To Bass, Probably A Robbery and the seminal album RSW In Dub helped shape the DNA of UK electronic music.

Now the RSW brand is back to inspire and delight a new generation. Founding member Danny Briottet approached the Jack Said What team with new music, and also the idea of reworking some of the RSW back catalogue. Legendary Brit DJ Carl Cox has long cited The Phantom as one of his favourite tracks of all time, and he was one of the first to agree to be a part of this ‘Rewired’ project. Carl has been rinsing his rework of The Phantom at his [UNVRS] gigs in Ibiza every week throughout the summer, providing the perfect launchpad for the RSW remix project to blast off into the stratosphere.

A who’s who of beats and bass culture have now also reworked choice RSW cuts. RSW Rewired is not a remix album in the traditional sense. Every invited artist worked from newly recorded stems created specifically for the project, giving them the freedom to deconstruct, reshape and rebuild each track into something entirely their own while preserving the spirit of the original compositions.

Every artist involved — all originators in their own unique ways — has professed love and admiration for Renegade Soundwave, and jumped at the opportunity to rework such an influential act.

Carl Cox, 808 State, Thievery Corporation, Mr C, Freestylers, Dub Pistols, Altern 8, Gaudi & Don Letts, Youth, Justin Robertson, Ray Keith, Nookie, Jon Carter, Utah Saints and Pattern Perception are just some of the names who have rewired RSW tracks by putting their own fresh spins on them. There are some absolutely cracking reinterpretations on this huge, amazing package, with plenty more coming too.
