When Ostgut Ton released it’s first compilation „Fünf“ in 2011 to mark the 5 year anniversary of the label, it was a huge undertaking featuring 23 artists on 7 pieces of vinyl in a boxed set. The sound approach to include field recordings made inside the Berghain building in all recordings was ambitious but suited the signature production aesthetics of the Ostgut Ton artists perfectly. After the success of „Fünf“ a new compilation on Ostgut Ton had to take a different approach.

With „Various“ Ostgut Ton offered a space for the artists to release tracks a little off-center from their known production styles, the result is a double 12inch with 8 different Ostgut Ton artists creating a journey through ambient electro styles to mellow techno grooves. All brought together by careful compilation and mastering that creates a unified whole, spread over 4 sides of vinyl, housed in a luscious gatefold sleeve.

Barker & Baumecker make the start with „Meiose“, elements of which have been used in their recent live sets, a paradoxically fast ambient track that breaks all the rules, with a slow diving sub bass to boost. On „Grunewald2“ by Fiedel (of MMM) – his second only contribution to the label after his killer track on „Fünf“ – the Berghain resident picks up the heavy bass theme and wraps it in sweet melodies reminiscent of early Rephlex days.

Turning into darker alleys, Tobias. creates a slow, deep cinemascopic soundworld with „Dark & Troubling Things“ that is at once disturbing and comforting but overall uniquely Tobias.

After the „D&N’s EP“ earlier this year veteran producer Rolando makes a welcome return to the label and surprises by also reaching into much more experimental territories. The brooding atmospheres build slowly and eventually a shuffling rhythm leads towards an entrance, only to break down again and keep the track inside the twilight zone.

It is left then to Marcel Fengler and Efdemin as DIN on the third side of the vinyl to pick up the beat and they do it with vibe. „You Are“ is a minimal tech beast covered in abstract sound architecture, every bit as intriguing as their recent contribution to the „MASSE“ project on Ostgut Ton. This year has also seen the critically acclaimed debut 12“ from Virginia and with her contribution to „Various“ she proves that she has not been resting one second but is constantly honing her production skills to create absolute gems like „Pulse“. She manages to extend the groove, sounding genuinely classic inside deep techno territory and lifts the spirits with the sweetest acid line.

It remains to be seen who records under the secret moniker Crushed Soul, although you might hazard a rough guess, but the electro jacked bass line complemented by the lush string arrangement on „Shades“ is yet another welcome branching out towards an updated, almost lost, classic sound as yet unheard in this form on Ostgut Ton. The last track on the compilation mirrors this extended EP like a résumé with its slow building melodies, atmospheres and final kick attack. Function puts you in the mood, builds up your desire and finally gives you exactly what you want, complemented by the beautiful vocals of Stefanie Parnow, this most emotional of Function tracks is presented here in its final and, dare we say it, perfect form.

Als 2011 Ostgut Ton die „Fünf“ Compilation veröffentlichte, um das fünfjährige Bestehen des Labels festzuhalten, fanden 23 Künstler auf sieben Vinyls, in einer aufwendig gestalteten Box, ihren Platz. Alle Ostgut Ton Künstler konnten mit Hilfe der im Berghain aufgenommen Sounds und ihrer passenden Handschrift in der Produktion die Ästhetik des Clubs wiedergeben. Nach dem Erfolg von „Fünf“ ist es an der Zeit einen anderen Ansatz zu finden.

Mit „Various“ wird für die teilnehmenden Künstler ein Raum geschaffen, in dem sie Musik veröffentlichen können, die etwas von ihrem üblichen Produktionsstil abweicht. Das Ergebnis der ersten „Various“ ist eine Doppel 12“ mit acht verschiedenen Ostgut Ton Künstlern, die zusammen eine Reise durch Ambient Electro Styles bis hin zu melodiösen Techno Grooves komponiert haben. Vereinigt, sorgfältig ausgewählt und gemastert, ergibt sich ein geschlossenes Ganzes, dass sich über vier Vinyl-Seiten erstreckt und in einem aufwendigen Gatefold Sleeve sein Zuhause findet.

Den Start machen Barker & Baumecker mit „Meiose“. Die im Track enthaltenen Elemente findet man auch in ihren aktuellen Live-Sets wieder. Ein seltsam schneller Ambient Track, der alle Regeln bricht und durch den tiefen Sub-Bass, den Zuhörer eintauchen lässt. Wie für das Vinyl geschaffen ist der Beitrag von MMMs Fiedel. Nach dem Killer Track auf „Fünf“ ist „Grunewald2“ seine zweite Beisteuerung zum Label. Der Berghain Resident nimmt das schwere Bassthema des Vorgängers und umhüllt es in eine verspielte Melodie, die an frühe Rephlex Tage erinnert. Tobias. führt uns hingegen in dunklere Gassen, innerhalb einer komplexen und tief-cineastischen Soundwelt. Sein Track „Dark & Troubling“ ist verstörend und beruhigend zugleich, aber eindeutig Tobias. Nach der diesjährigen „D&N’s EP“ kehrt der erfahrene Produzent Rolando mit einem weiteren Track für das Label zurück und überrascht mit seinem Vordringen in experimentelle Territorien. Die kochende Atmosphäre von „Neglected“ entsteht durch den langsamen Aufbau versetzter Rhythmen, die darauf warten im Zwielicht der warmen Chords einzubrechen.

Auf der dritten Seite des Vinyls finden Marcel Fengler und Efdemin als DIN ihren Platz. Diesmal mit einem eingängigen Minimal Beat. „You Are“ ist ein Biest der Reduktion, das durch die umfassenden abstrakten Sounds durchaus Vibe besitzt. Genau so faszinierend wie ihr jüngster Beitrag für das Projekt „MASSE“ auf Ostgut Ton. Virginia, die dieses Jahr für ihre Debüt 12“ viel Kritikerlob bekam, beweist nun mit ihrem Beitrag zu „Various“, dass sie sich keine Sekunde lang ausgeruht sondern mit ihren Fertigkeiten absolute Geheimtipps, wie „Pulse“, produziert hat. Sie schafft es den Groove zu erweitern und sich trotzdem klassisch im Bereich des Technos zu bewegen, zugleich hebt sie mit der süßesten Acid-Line die Stimmung.

Es bleibt abzuwarten wer sich unter dem geheimen Pseudonym von Crushed Soul verbirgt, auch wenn man vielleicht eine Vermutung wagen könnte. Die fetzende Electro Bass-Line, die kombiniert mit dem üppigen String-Arrangement auf „Shades“ wirkt, besitzt den Charme einer fast vergessen, klassischen Zeit. In dieser Form noch ungehört auf Ostgut Ton. Der letzte Track der Compilation von Function spiegelt die „Various“ EP wie ein Resümee wieder. Mit seiner langsam aufbauenden Melodie, die sich auf den finalen Einsatz der klassischen Drums vorbereitet, schafft „Golden Dawn“ einen stimmungsvollen Abschluss. Dank der Stimme von Stefanie Parnow, ist es eine der gefühlvollsten Produktionen von Function geworden und wird hier in seiner finalen und perfekten Form präsentiert.

Kobosil offers up the fifth release on Ostgut Ton’s sister label Unterton. After his self released debut EP “——-” a signature sound becomes apparent on the equally obscure titled “- —–” second EP, a style that places him somewhere between noise, techno and the verve for sobriety. The opening track merely insinuates futurism, through its cadence with analog connotations “Contact” places itself firmly between years past and tomorrow.

The throbbing, psychedelic sci-fi theme of “Aggregate”, as well as “Osmium” with it’s emphatic, steadily rising synth-line, may be declared as purist techno, if the brooding character apparent in Kobosil’s productions falls below the decks. The EP concludes with “Herschel” in a decelerating instruction for a through space drifting ambient track that grants access at the same time as underlining what constitutes Kobosil’s music: singularity.

Das fünfte Release auf Ostgut Tons Schwesterlabel Unterton kommt von Kobosil. Nach seiner selbstveröffentlichten Debüt-EP „——-“ zeichnet sich auf der neuen EP mit dem ähnlich obskuren Titel „- —–“ allmählich eine Handschrift ab, die sich zwischen Noise, Techno und der Verve für Ernsthaftigkeit bewegt. Der Eröffnungstrack „Contact“ täuscht den Futurismus lediglich an, denn im Gleichschritt werden analoge Assoziationen geweckt, die weder im Gestern noch im Morgen verankert sind.

Sowohl das pochend-psychedelische Sci-Fi-Thema von „Aggregate“ als auch „Osmium“ mit seiner sich eindringlich, stetig aufbauende Synthie-Line dürfen als puristischer Techno deklariert werden, wenn der brütende Charakter seiner Produktionen nicht unter die Decks fällt. Zum Abschluss der EP wartet mit „Herschel“ eine entschleunigte Anleitung für einen im Raum treibenden Ambient Track, der gleichzeitig den Einstieg trägt und es zu unterstreichen versteht, was Kobosils Tracks ausmachen: Singularität.

One of the most reliable names in techno and arguably Berghain’s most prominent face, Marcel Dettmann has already once accomplished the difficult task of translating his pared-back techno sound to the album format. His debut self-titled album, released back in 2010, comprised 12 sculptures of obdurate stone and steel aimed at a pair of good headphones as much as they were a dance floor. They showed a producer as adept at intricate sound design as he was rocking the world’s best club. Since then, Dettmann has released another acclaimed mix CD and a string of singles which had him move away from that LP’s tough textures and into everything from liquid ambient to the catchiest music of his career.

But then there’s Dettmann II. A sequel in a true sense, the album marks a return to the spirit of the first album, but things feel less tense this time around. Dettmann brings his recent experimental outlook and applies it to the album template, creating a record that lives and breathes with a naturalism rare for a techno album. Expertly paced, Dettmann II impresses especially with its carefully rising narrative.

On first glance, as the album barrels into action with the particulate grit of “Throb” and „Ductil”, Dettmann is in fine style. But to the careful listener, these tracks feel lightweight like they’re built from aluminum instead of steel. Each tune’s central theme is a bit more out there than usual, from the sheet metal racket of “Lightworks” to the house-hinting chorus of “Soar”, which is every bit as majestic as its title implies. He offers up some top-notch ambient material as well, like the trippy “Shiver”, or the ominous “Outback”, which features contributions from Levon Vincent.

Dettmann also reaches for a rare collaboration on his second album. Kindred spirit Emika lends her spectral gasps to “Seduction”, which stays stunningly antiseptic even as it weaves her voice into its wire framework. With Dettmann II’s stretch of tracks “Radar” and “Corridor”, the album finally takes flight into full-on club mania, fist-pumping career-high material with all the subtlety of his old work molded up into a spiky banger.

“Aim”, which ends the record in lofty fashion, hints at a new direction for Dettmann, uncharacteristically melodic and even uplifting. Co-produced by René Pawlowitz, it bears the Shed touch but keeps it firmly in Dettmann’s finely-honed world. The first track written for the album and the one that initiated the album sessions in the first place, it carefully hints at new directions while keeping its glance firmly in Dettmann’s established history – which you could say for the album as a whole, gently moving towards new horizons but always keeping in mind what made Dettmann’s past music so great in the first place.

Als einer der verlässlichsten Protagonisten im Techno Genre und wahrscheinlich Berghains bekanntestes Gesicht, hat Marcel Dettmann schon einmal die schwierige Aufgabe gemeistert, seinen kondensierten Entwurf von Techno ins Album Format zu übersetzen. Sein Debütalbum Dettmann von 2010, setzte sich aus 12 kompromisslosen Stein- und Stahlskulpturen zusammen, die ebenso auf die Köpfhörer zu Hause als auch auf die Tanzfläche zielten. Mit dem Album bewies er, dass ihm detailgenaues Sounddesign ebenso leicht von der Hand geht, wie im Club sein Publikum zu begeistern. Seitdem gab es eine weitere Mix-CD und eine Reihe von EPs zu hören, in denen er sich von den harten Texturen der LP freimachte und auch weichere und eingängigere Ambient Töne anschlug.

Nun folgt Dettmann II. Beim Nachfolger zum ersten Album kehrt Dettmann zur These des Vorgängers zurück, aber diesmal scheint alles etwas entspannter zu sein. Dettmann bringt seine experimentelle Perspektive ein und wendet sie so an, dass eine lebendiges, ganz selbstverständliches Techno Album entsteht, wie wir es nur selten finden.

Mit „Throb“ und „Ductil“ beginnt er das Album auf den ersten Blick in gewohnter Charakterstärke, aber diesmal erkennt man bei genauem Hinhören eine gewisse Leichtigkeit, als ob die Tracks aus Aluminium statt Stahl konstruiert sind. Die Leitgedanken der Tracks sind hier breiter gefächert als gewohnt. Vom blechernen Metallgetöse in „Lightworks“ bis zu Andeutungen von House im Chorus von „Soar“, welches so majestätisch wirkt, wie der Titel suggeriert. Dettmann arbeitet auch erstklassiges Ambient Material mit ein, wie das psychedelisch angehauchte „Shiver“, oder das ominös klingende „Outback“, bei dem Levon Vincent seine Hand mit im Spiel hatte.

Ein weiterer Höhepunkt auf Dettmann II ist die seltene Zusammenarbeit mit der seelenverwandten Emika. Mit geisterhaftem Odem verleiht ihr Gesang auf „Seduction“ dem Stück eine atemberaubende Kühle, die seltsam bestehen bleibt, auch wenn sich ihre Stimme mehr und mehr ins Gewebe des Tracks einfügt. Was mit „Radar“ und „Corridor“ folgt ist nichts weniger als Dettmanns endgültig überschäumende Stellungnahme zum Thema Club-Wahnsinn. Es sind seine wahrscheinlich bisher unnachgiebigsten Tracks, die aber auch alle Feinheiten seiner bisherigen Arbeiten in einem dornigen Knall neu verpacken.

Auf grandiose Weise beendet „Aim“ das Album und deutet auf eine neue, erfrischende und melodiösere Richtung Dettmanns hin. Co-produziert von René Pawlowitz bleibt der Track doch fest in Dettmanns Soundwelt verankert. Als erstes Stück für dieses Album fertiggestellt und inspirierend für die Aufnahmen insgesamt, weist es auch auf neue Wege, die sich aber von Dettmanns bekanntem Stil nicht unbedingt trennen lassen. Musik, die sich behutsam auf neue Horizonte zubewegt, aber nie aus dem Auge verliert, was Marcel Dettmann bisher so besonders auszeichnete.
