Resurgent rave innovator Force Mass Motion leans into his progressive side on new EP

Seasoned UK favourite Mike Wells helped define the earliest templates for rave, UK hardcore, and jungle before pioneering nu-school breaks sounds and releasing via the legendary Rabbit City, as well as Lot49 and Kingsize Records. Alongside his rave-focused productions, he has always had one foot in the progressive house camp, and it’s these releases that have spurned a new generation of supporters, such as Palms Trax and Job Jobse, who have been championing his music, both old and new. Now Wells is back with a brand-new two-tracker that mines this melodic vein and marks the latest release on his ever-relevant, eponymously titled label.

The latest missive kicks off with ‘Floorstate’, which fizzles with acid undulations and pressured drums that work towards an ultimate dance floor takeoff. The catalyst is a euphoric vocal and rousing synth progression that breaks out, ensuring emotions will flow in overdrive. ‘You Make Me Move (Superfast)’ is more urgent, with slamming drums and hints of 90s techno synth work all reworked for contemporary dance floors. A warped bassline adds low-end dynamics, and another sensuous female vocal provides a warm emotional counter.

DAT finds Vapour Trails’ and ‘One Piano’ accompany the remasters of rave classics ‘The Brain Is’ and ‘Virtually You’

Force Mass Motion’s rave Friskee project from the 90s has seen a feverish renewed interest over the past few years. Released initially on FUK Stereophonic Gramophone in 1997, the tracks are remastered and join two previously unheard cuts from the project that were found in a box of DATs and thought lost to time.

Opener ‘The Brain Is’ is a mix of wiry electronics featuring blissed-out ambient synths with turbocharged beats. Add in progressive techno melodies that will get the floor pumping and you have a widescreen and atmospheric gem. The brilliant ‘Virtually You’ is an almost eight-minute trip with elastic basslines and bouncing drums all doused in lush cosmically minded pads and starry-eyed melodies that have you gazing off into the future. ‘Vapour Trails’ then gets a little deeper and heads down with warming pads and waves of subtle vocal cries that make the skin tingle. It’s a physical yet sensuous sound, and last of all, ‘One Piano’ brings hints of trance and prog to the thudding drums and fizzled synths, which all surge through a late night sky with a great sense of poignancy and artful craft.

Mike Wells is the man behind the Force Mass Motion project, drawing on years of experience as an underground DJ, producer, and label owner. In his storied career, he has done it all, from helping to shape the sound of rave, UK hardcore, and jungle to pioneering the nu-school breaks sound. His music has come on esteemed like Mute, Rabbit City, Lot49 and Kingsize Records and now on his own Force Mass Motion Recordings.

Mike Wells has been a core part of the contemporary underground scene almost since day one. He was there and helping to shape the sound of rave, UK hardcore and jungle, then sat at the forefront of the nu-school breaks revolution. He has appeared on plenty of notable labels from Rabbit City to Lot49 to Kingsize Records, but now takes care of business himself on Force Mass Motion Recordings.

The opener ‘In Your Eyes’ has elastic drum funk designed purely for the club with filtered vocals adding the human touch. Well-designed acid lines, big hits and smeared chords keep things dynamic as the writhing groove powers on. The fantastic ‘Oh Ecstasy’ will have dancers in raptures with its explosive vocal cries and rave-ready synths. The artist’s signature blistering breakbeats power the track along through breakdowns and big drops, all of which build the tension to electric levels.

This is another potent offering of irresistible dance floor weaponry from Force Mass Motion.

Mike Wells has been an ever-present force in the electronic underground, releasing on labels like Lot49, Kingsize Records and Rabbit City Records since the nineties. Whether pioneering nu-school breaks or laying down classic hardcore, jungle and rave, he has consistently produced high-quality music. He draws on those rich and authentic roots here with two new tunes that come hot on the heels of his last outing, the ‘You’ll Never Be Back’ EP.

The standout ‘Give You Everything’ is full-throttle club music. Fat breakbeats power it along in rugged fashion while an exquisite and old-school diva vocal tugs at the heartstrings. Wells’s textbook bass sounds and bright synths add weight to this bulky yet emotive banger. The masterfully expansive ‘House Is Mine’ is another one aimed squarely at the peak time. This one has a brilliantly busy rhythm that darts about the mix as blistering synths and big stabs race forwards. Impassioned, filtered vocal yelps bring a touch of original rave energy as the drums crash on in compelling style.

There is no avoiding the potency of these latest weapons from the excellent Force Mass Motion.

Force Mass Motion reverts to his old school roots with You’ll Never Be Back, a new EP on his self-titled label.

It is fair to say that Force Mass Motion is a legend of the UK’s hardcore, rave and jungle scene. The man born Mike Wells has always had a high rate and high-quality output and that has kept him at the heart of the underground since he first emerged in 1989. While he pioneered a nu-school breaks sound and has released on influential labels like Lot49, Kingsize Records and Rabbit City Records, he is now on his own imprint and channeling his earliest musical loves once more.

Opener ‘You’ll Never Be Alone’ is an all-out dance floor banger with throwback hardcore stabs and a pitched-up female vocal that brings the euphoria. The punchy breakbeats power it along as fills, sustained chords and bouncing bass all flesh out this full-flavour classic.

Energy levels remain just as high on ‘Back to Back’, with its tightly coiled drums and restless synths darting about the mix. Vocal stabs and manic acid lines keep things bubbling as the tension rises and the heat on the dance floor rises to boiling point.

These are two brilliantly contemporary takes on an authentic and irresistible old school sound.
