paul kendall is an engineer, mixer and sonic producer who has contributed to a number of iconic releases by artists such as barry adamson, renegade soundwave, nitzer ebb, recoil, wire, loop and as a footnote with nin and dm. he worked for many years for daniel miller’s mute records and during this period curated an experimental electronic label, parallel series. four cds were released, featuring bruce gilbert, robert hampson, simon fisher turner and andrei samsonov. in 2002 he relocated to paris and spectacularly metamorphosed his art into an electro-acoustic expression, managing to miss arsenal’s double winning glory as a result. this enforced sojourn saw him developing his compositional skills writing sound for the ballet and theatre. the album ‘capture’ was released in 2003 through french label 0101 (ici d’ailleurs), to date, the only digital intervention object available. after returning to the uk in 2007 kendall helped alan wilder develop a live incarnation of recoil. and from 2010 they toured across half the continents of the world with ‘a strange hour’ allowing kendall to experience the thrill of ‘live performance’ and refine his shapes and dance moves. on 01.10.11 saw the release of ‘angleterror’ a digital only release of 7 compositions loosely built around various guitar sounds. september 2014 sees the new long-playing record available on cd from ant-zen, ‘family value pack’. this solo artistic exposure is a precursor to the coming solo exhibition via ‘live’ performance.

the seven compositions on this album transport the artistic spirit of the british avant-garde heard in projects like dome / wire and very early clock dva towards the end of the seventies when a specific splinter group of the punk movement was exploring the length, width and depth of musical freedom / expression. in his previous work paul kendall put the emphasis on the guitar, on ‘family value pack’ it is more focused on the human voice, his own voice as well as samples of family members and a secret celebrity. except for track one, ‘scuba dis dat’ with its pushing technoid beats and horn-supplied art punk approach, this release offers collagistic, structurally unorthodox and abstract atmospheric sound spheres chimed with dark ambience – contemporary musique concrète orbiting between warmth and chill.

this album may not set the charts on fire, but it contains an amazing aural experience. the full background story: the intrigue, the denouements, the highs and lows, the cruel and the tender, will be diffused / published on paul kendall’s official webpage. for now, enjoy the headphone paint!

We’re honored to present a 12” EP of tracks from the archives of Sheffield based electronic music legend Richard H. Kirk, entitled “Never Lose Your Shadow”. Kirk first came to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the seminal industrial band Cabaret Voltaire. His first release as a solo artist, Disposable Half-Truths, came out in 1980 on Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Records label and since then he developed a solo career parallel to the band until its dissolution in 1994.

On the EP, we compile tracks originally recorded between 1978 and 1987, which have never before been released on vinyl. The title track, ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ blurs the lines between harsh industrial, dance floor, and no wave. This is one we’ve been playing out for a while now and wondering why it hadn’t been pressed on vinyl. The other three tracks are more experimental and reference ideas Kirk was exploring in Cabaret Voltaire at the time. When asked specifically about this collection, Kirk explains that “none of the tracks were outtakes for Cabaret Voltaire, they were always solo tracks, although I think ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ was vey much a blueprint for the material that Cabaret Voltaire recorded for Virgin / Some Bizarre between 1983-85. The minimal sequencer / drum machine lockdown that I used later for Cabaret Voltaire was pioneered on this track. Lyrically, ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ was inspired by the 1971 speed freak road movie ‘Vanishing Point’, amongst other things.”

The EP is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies, the first 500 are pressed on solid grey vinyl and the remainder on black. Note: the release date has been changed to September 16th, 2014, with pre-orders commencing on August 22nd.

Mute is proud to welcome Zola Jesus to our worldwide roster.

Nika is the sole singer and songwriter behind Zola Jesus’ many creative incarnations. Written on Vashon Island, WA and co-produced in Los Angeles, CA by Dean Hurley, Taiga follows the widely celebrated albums, Versions (2013) and Conatus (2011). This is Nika’s fourth full-length album release and the first single from the forthcoming 11-track album is ‘Dangerous Days’.

In regards to the album title, Nika explains, “Taiga is the Russian name for the boreal forest. For me it feels very alive… very expansive. It represents a feral, untapped world that could happily exist without us. There are taiga forests in Northern Wisconsin where I was raised, and also in Russia where my ancestors are from, so it also feels very native.”

Liberated in the present and connected to the past, this album is a transition for Zola Jesus. Masterful layers of composition are bathed in familiar atmospheric vocals, but a new sensibility is deeply present. Taiga is at once challenging and accessible, and is undeniably branded with what Nika terms a “piercing ambition.” Such encompassing purpose, she explains, would be impossible without a newfound sense of artistic self. The album is a declaration of that purpose; one faced with jarring clarity in both its content and production. Nika summates, “For me, it feels like my true debut, because it is the first time I have felt so open and liberated.”

Zola Jesus ist die 25-jährige Sängerin, Songschreiberin und Produzentin Nika Roza Danilova, unnötig, sie an dieser Stelle groß vorzustellen. Geschrieben in Vashon Island in Washington State und gemischt in Los Angeles von Dean Hurley, folgt Taiga den gefeierten Alben Versions (2013) und Conatus (2011). Es ist ihr viertes Album.

Zum Albumtitel erklärt Nika: “Taiga ist der russische Name für den borealen Wald. Der sich für mich sehr lebendig anfühlt…. Sehr expansiv. In der Gegenwart stehend und doch verbunden mit der Vergangenheit, beschreibt das vorliegende Album einen Wandel.
