For the past four years the Kollektives Bewusstsein have thrown unique and intense parties across the many parks and clubs of Berlin. As a party collective, Kollektives Bewusstein has always focused on their most important values: bringing forth the right music to unite conscious-minded people, within a unique atmosphere.
It’s therefore not surprising a couple wildlings from the wolf pack thought of going a step further: releasing some of the fantastic productions often lost in hours of live djing, as well as new material.
In this first instalment under the Kollektives Bewusstsein imprint, listeners are served fully developed, deep and brightly nuanced musical endeavours. As the labels’ name states, Kollektives Bewusstsein is about the collective consciousness. Musically, this relates to embracing just as much the dark as the light, the deep and the lighthearted, the body and the mind—in essence, human emotion in all its manifestations.
Tracks like Epic and Aleph, from Josia Loos and Hey Joe respectively, set a more shadowy tone to this contrasty selection of tracks. Like walking into a dark meadow enclosed in a forest filled with unfamiliar sounds, distant echoes and silhouettes that seem more like tricks of the mind than reality. Streiflicht’s Dance Under the Full-Moon lightly brushes away these hard feelings, parting the night-clouds to let the moonlight stream into the meadow, where the silhouettes turn into people, dancing to a familiar beat.
Picking up the momentum, In Chains and Moogish are, like many tracks in this sampler, made to be heard loud with hands flying and feet stomping. Staying colourful, Creative Amateur’s track Bleib Geschmeidig fits as perfectly as its title suggests: by staying smooth. Elena Gniss’s soft and soulful voice flows effortlessly through the groove. Floating, by Deskem and Paradox Effects, reveals the wonders of minimally constructed and deeply melodic drum and bass. Although entirely different in rhythm, Static Plates’ track Relation also recalls the simple elements that make great electronic music: hard-driven beats on mounting bass, over continuously melodic elements. Ronin finds Hey Joe also returning to his hard-hitting signature style, adding crackling synths and distorted vocals to a hammering bass.
Having drilled through the dark hallways of minimal techno, Lucky Hofmanns Bike blooms like a flower between the cracks of concrete. Jasmin Falk’s dreamy voice flows through Mario Engelter’s altered guitar riffs, all woven into Josia Loos’ psychedelic production. It’s the perfect finishing title, reminding us to keep dancing under the summer sun, while it’s still around.
