Press Info (English):
Berlin-based DJ and producer Steffi returns with her second album Power Of Anonymity on Ostgut Ton.

“I wanted to start working on my new album without any personal or external expectations and I was seeking an emancipated, unshackled approach in the album’s construction. I intended to include Electro and IDM elements as these are my roots: it’s the music that I first started djing. After almost 20 years I got the feeling that I’ve come full circle, so I wanted to make an album that I, as a DJ, would like to carry in my record bag.

My first LP – Yours & Mine (Ostgut Ton, 2011) – is very conceptual, it has a certain vibe that not only fits the club but also works on a stereo or in the car. Power Of Anonymity is much more about how I see the dance floor these days, and my aim was to take that vision into the studio. I asked myself what would happen if I could produce day after day without DJ gigs and travel interrupting my flow. These long stints in the studio allowed me to divide my time into three single blocks: initially I would only do jams and make sketches, followed by a phase for arranging and editing all recordings, and then a mixdown period for the album. Concentrating on creating Power Of Anonymity has inspired me to carry on tapping deeper into my creative vein. I’m looking forward to the next time when I can step into the studio. Being focused is the key.”

– Steffi, Berlin, August 2014 –

The new approach to her songwriting and production sees the 40-year-old Steffi being as on point as ever. Power Of Anonymity features laid-back, melodic cuts like “Pip”, “Fine Friend” and the break-heavy title track next to more straightforward, hypnotic dance floor pieces such as “Selfhood”, “Bag Of Crystals”, “JBW25” and “Bang For Your Buck”. Besides her solo instrumental productions, Steffi’s collaboration with longtime friends Dexter and Virginia on the uplifting, percussion-driven vocal track “Treasure Seeking” is the icing on the cake.

Just like “Power Of Anonymity” as a single piece of music, the album itself lives on an industrial-resonating structure of 808s, crisp synth stabs, pulsing staccati and dark, percussive drumbeats. With her second album Steffi recalls classic, landmark Detroit Electro, while creating her very own modern, retro-futuristic sound.

Press Info:
London based songwriter Charlie Cunningham released his widely acclaimed debut ‘Outside Things’ in late 2014 (now also released on CD via Butterfly Collectors), and now returns with his emotive follow up ‘Breather’ – his second EP – out on CD and digitally on 06th March via Butterfly Collectors and vinyl through Kissability on 9th March.

Renowned for his percussive guitar sound, which draws heavily on his influences from two years living in Seville, Cunningham’s song writing on ‘Breather’ is second to none; it’s an intimate and powerful offering with his voice used as a fragile instrument to compliment his perfectly honed guitar craftsmanship.

Title track and EP opener ‘Breather’ captures with its melodic grounding but quickly and effectively changes pace leaving you unsure as to what might happen next. ‘Lessleg’ is a heartfelt contemplation of friendship the delicately constructed ‘Long Grass’ flows effortlessly into closing track ‘Own Speed’, a beautiful folk rock offering with playful vocals reminiscent of Phosphorescent or Midlake.

Cunningham’s ‘Breather’ EP further signals a very bright future for this rising British star.

out now: Planetary Assault Systems – The Eyes Themselves [Mote-Evolver]

Artist:
Planetary Assault Systems

Title:
The Eyes Themselves

Label:
Mote-Evolver

Cat#:
MOTE041

Release Date:
23rd February 2015

Format:
12inch & digital

Tracklist:
01)
The Eyes Themselves

02)
Strange Attractor

03)
Arc

Press Info:
Since the release of the Temporary Suspension LP on Ostgut Ton in 2009, foreman of Planetary Assault Systems, Luke Slater has validated his presence in the scene over the past 20 years by defining the genre’s past and will continuing to define its future. Subsequently The Messenger LP as well as the No Exit and Future Modular EPs proved he perpetually rests on the cusp of modern techno. While he has spread his allegiances across a number of the genre’s best labels, his own Mote Evolver label is, understandably, a source of the most compelling work from the man: the No Exit and Deep Heet Vol. 3 EPs being two of his more recent high-quality offerings. That trend seems set to continue with the release of Planetary Assault Systems’ The Eyes Themselves EP.

The title track is indeed a kind of treat for the mind’s eye – after a convetional rhythmic leadin, Slater gets down to business and unveils a few layers of crisp and captivating sound design. Irregular droplets of high-frequency sound fade in and then seem to fall around the listener like glowing rain on the surface of a distant planet, before receding and making way for more subtle phrases. All the while, fluctuations in the aggressiveness and persistence of the cymbal tracks fight to wrest the listener’s attention away from this mesmerizing rain, making for an intriguing push-pull effect.

Elsewhere, it is a sign of Slater’s strength that a track named for a well-known concept within dynamical systems (“Strange Attractor”) doesn’t come across as a completely arbitrary guess at what such a concept might ‘sound’ like. A number of lightly accented, quickly decaying micro-sounds come together here to become more than the sum of their parts, certainly connoting dynamism and at the very least keeping up a servicable spaced-out
groove.

Now, for those who prefer the grit and tension of urban reality to dancing numbers or speculation on other worlds, have no fear – the closing “Arc” is powered along by dirty filtered phrases, a faintly menacing shaker sample and the occasional impolite release of steam from the grating beneath your feet. It gives one the uneasy feeling of stalking in the shoes of a professional assassin, and it wouldn’t be out of place in some documentary film on the same.

Few sonic artists can go from an atmosphere of oneiric wonder to one of cold intensity in just a few short steps, let alone doing this in a techno music genre that has little margin for error when it comes to conjuring atmospheres. As such, The Eyes Themselves once again demonstrates Slater’s lasting contribution to techno: maintaining its reputation as a tool for stimulating both intellectual and physical energy, for aiding restless peregrinations of thought and for giving the body its freedom.
