Press Info:
In the past two years, Bavarian born and now Berlin based producer Jakob Häglsperger has been highly active under the moniker of Kalipo. After a series of remixes and contributions to compilations released by Stiff Little Spinners, a subdivision of the (in)famous Audiolith imprint, he now presents his debut album Yaruto. Häglsperger, who has been making music from his early teens on and has since immersed himself in Hip Hop, Downbeat, Techno and avantgarde music, opts for an experimental approach, hoping to achieve a timeless sound. »What matters most to me is finding my own musical language, a sound that won’t lose its spark.« Yaruto can be enjoyed on a hazy Sunday afternoon at home on your couch, but will also increase your endorphins on a Saturday night at a club.

Yaruto is as much the product of hard work as it is a result of critical self-evaluation and occasional serendipity. »When I’m in the studio for six days in a row, I spend at least five of them feeling depressed because nothing seems to work out. I go for those four magic minutes in which everything suddenly falls into its place.« After toying with a variety of samples, Häglsperger usually creates patterns and takes them to the studio to flesh out the rough drafts with his wide array of analogue synthesizers and, occasionally, instruments like a Rhodes piano, a metallophone or guitars. Vocal samples are being chopped up and rearranged by Häglsperger until the syllables develop a life of their own and eventually create the abstract narrative that makes up the thematic backbone of this otherwise intuitively written record. From the opener »Embryo« and the track that gave the album its name through to the final track »Cloud Dancing II«, Yaruto follows what you might call an impersonal biography by creating moods that correspond with certain stages of life, constantly commented on by disembodied voices.

Yaruto will be released on Antime, the Berlin based label run by Martin Steer with whom Hägelsperger shares production duties in the German Electro Punk outfit Frittenbude. »Antime was an obvious choice, because Martin fully trusts me and my creative instinct. Thus, I can experiment as much as I want to and don’t have to compromise even though my music might not have a mass appeal«, says Hägslperger, who has also relocated to the German capitol a few years back, with regard to the hypnotic, Gamelan-influenced rhythms on tracks like »Listen To You« and subtle nods to composers like Steve Reich whose Music For 18 Musicians Häglsperger cites in »Get Rich«.

Despite being his own most critical judge, Häglsperger, who in his energetic live sets uses only analogue hardware, has worked on the album almost completely autonomous and also contributed to the album’s artwork. As his first hobby turned into a fulltime job, Häglsperger decided he was in urgent need of a second one and resorted to analogue photography. Some of his pictures made their way into the artwork which was taken care of by Antime’s in-house graphic designers Johann Steer and Helga Stierle.

Yaruto has been in the works for more than a year while Häglsperger was producing albums for the likes of Fuck Art, Let’s Dance and others and will be followed by a series of digital releases as well as music videos on which he is currently working on.

Limited to 100 numbered copies, includes the limited 3xCD and 10×12“ vinyl boxes. Housed inside a black hardboard box it comes with:
– digital versions of the artworks and all vinyl tracks (over 3GB of .WAV files) on a 16GB Ostgut Ton | Zehn metal USB stick
– a download of the CD version in the format of choice (via Bandcamp)
– ten full colour A2 posters of the ten 12″ artworks on affiche paper
– an individual number in the form of an aluminum Ostgut Ton dog tag with a black cord (you might recognize these from somewhere)
– a surprise O-TON test pressing white label 12″ or double LP, randomly chosen from our back catalogue, featuring artists that also appear on Ostgut Ton | Zehn. The luck of the draw decides which one you get, inside this edition each catalogue number included only appears one, two or three times at most, some are extremely rare with only three copies ever made.

Press Info:
It’s been zehn years, ninety-two 12″ EPs, twenty albums, fourteen DJ mixes, seven Unterton releases, two compilations, one 7“ single and one cassette. Within this time, Ostgut Ton has grown as a label not only in terms of catalogue numbers and musical variety, but also in terms of experience, professionality and as a musical haven for Berghain’s and Panorama Bar’s residents.

Our anniversary label compilation, Ostgut Ton | Zehn, will be released in various physical and digital formats on 30 October 2015.

In times where young people are discovering Techno and House for the very first time and others are rediscovering the genre that has been defining popular and club culture for well over thirty years, many think pieces these days seem very much obsessed with the exploration and idealisation of dance music’s past. Ostgut Ton founder and former label manager Nick Höppner reflected on this topic with his recent Folk album (Ostgut Ton, 2015) – Techno and House music with their respective derivatives are “tried and tested – loved for exactly what (they are).” Moving forward the thirty exclusive tracks on Ostgut Ton | Zehn only look back twice in form of one new edit and one new ambient version of Ostgut Ton back catalogue tracks.

Ostgut Ton | Zehn is not intended to be nostalgia, not a best of ten years, not a testament of Ostgut Ton’s past. It’s an adult statement of the label’s status quo as well as a glimpse of what’s forthcoming – at the end of a decade, on the brink of the future. While the preceding anniversary compilation Fünf (Ostgut Ton, 2010) was more of a conceptual release (using field recordings from inside Berghain as the source material), Ostgut Ton | Zehn was conceived and commissioned with as much of creative freedom as possible for the artists involved.

What this compilation intends and even more so does is showcasing the Ostgut Ton artist roster’s overall talent, consistency and quality as well as hinting towards the time to come. People familiar with Berghain and Ostgut Ton will be served with new, original music by Norman Nodge, Boris, Marcel Dettmann, Function, Nick Höppner, Answer Code Request, Fiedel, Barker & Baumecker, Anthony Parasole, L.B. Dub Corp / Planetary Assault Systems (both Luke Slater), Ryan Elliott, Len Faki, Ben Klock, Steffi, Marcel Fengler feat. Elif Biçer, Virginia, Atom™ & Tobias.

But Ostgut Ton | Zehn also serves as a more formal introduction for new additions to the label and Ostgut Booking agency roster such as Kobosil, Efdemin, Martyn and Etapp Kyle as well as collaborations such as DIN (Efdemin, Fengler), Doms & Deykers (Steffi, Martyn) and S/D (Slater, Dettmann). While most of the latter have already put out at least one solo record on Ostgut Ton, their tracks for Ostgut Ton | Zehn are a peek into the near future – full length albums by Kobosil, DIN and Virginia will be following in 2016. And not to forget friends and family: Dinky, DVS1, Matthew Styles (vinyl exclusive remix), Atom™ and Substance have been invited to add an original piece, too.

Since you’ve read until the very end of this page you might find it interesting to learn that more content will be surfacing on this website until the release day on 30th October 2015, accompanied by several Ostgut Ton | Zehn showcases across Europe and the release party at Berghain on 31st October.

To the next zehn years!
