Remastered and available here on vinyl for the first time since Mute’s reissue in 1990, Red Mecca features the line up of Richard H Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson, and is Cabaret Voltaire’s third album, and the final full album with co-founder Chris Watson.

Red Mecca was produced at Western Works, Sheffield, and, although rioting at this time hadn’t reached Cabaret Voltaire’s hometown, it was a particularly incendiary time across Britain and the tension was explicit through the news media. Explains Kirk, “that insurrection on the streets found its way into the music” and the album was seen by many as the alternative soundtrack to the unrest on the streets.

With Middle Eastern musical influences and a title that reflected the beginnings of long running tensions stemming from the Islamic Revolution and the resulting Afghanistan conflict and rise in fundamentalism, the buried vocals and large instrumental passages are a wonderful bridge between the punkier ethos of earlier releases, Mix Up and The Voice Of America and the more dance minded 2X45 and Yashar EPs that followed.

Inspirations on the album were varied, but these tensions were particularly highlighted by ‘A Touch Of Evil’, which bookends the album and was itself was inspired by the Orson Welles film Touch of Evil (1958) and the soundtrack by Henry Mancini. For ‘Spread The Virus’, the inspiration came from William Burroughs and northern soul while CB became another, initially unlikely sounding, inspiration. CB radio was important at the time as an alternative method of communication. Says Richard, “we were thinking about doing a pirate radio at that time, which never happened, but buried in the sounds before ‘Red Mask’, are clips of CB radio transmissions.”

Red Mecca is an intriguing snapshot of a band continuing to experiment and evolve, different enough to anything of theirs before or after, and very different to whatever the rest of the planet was producing at the time (or since).

Red Mecca was remastered by mastering engineer extraordinaire Stefan Betke (Pole), who also works with Third Ear, Minus, Wagon Repair, Uncanny Valley, Ornaments, BPitch Control, K7 and mastered the VCMG project for Martin Gore and Vince Clarke.

Remastered von Stefan Betke (Pole) – der auch für Third Ear, Minus, Wagon Repair, Uncanny Valley, Ornaments, Bpitch Control, K7 arbeitet und zuletzt für Mute VCMG, das Projekt von Martin Gore und Vince Clarke gemastert hat – und zum ersten Mal seit dem 1990er Re-Issue wieder als Vinyl erhältlich, ist Red Mecca das dritte Album von Cabaret Voltaire; und gleichzeitig das letzte, das neben Richard H Kirk und Stephen Malliner, Mitbegründer Chris Watson im Lineup zeitigt.

Red Mecca wurde in den Western Works Studios in Sheffield produziert – und auch, wenn die Riots der frühen Thatcher-Jahre noch nicht Cabaret Voltaires Heimatstadt erreichten, so war doch klar, dass es eine Zeit der Unruhen war in Großbritannien, und nicht nur da – die Spannungen waren mit der Hand zu greifen: „The insurrection on the streets found its way into the music”, sagt Kirk. Für nicht wenige wurde das Album so zu einem alternativen Soundtrack des Aufruhrs.

Die vergrabenen vocals und langen, instrumentalen Passagen, die Einflüsse aus dem Mittleren Osten aufnahmen (nicht nur der Titel reflektiert die Afghanische Revolution), schlagen eine Brücke von den über Punk informierten früheren Veröffentlichungen Mix Up und The Voice Of America zu den Dance-beeinflussten späteren Werken wie 2X45 und den Yashar EPs.

Die Einflüsse auf Red Mecca sind zahlreich, wenngleich die zuvor genannten Spannungen einen Rahmen geben dürften: „A Touch Of Evil“, das die Klammer des Albums bildet, ist zu gleichen Teilen von Orson Welles gleichnamigem Film und dessen Mancini-Soundtrack inspiriert. Die Inspiration zu „Spread The Virus“ gründet auf der Lektüre von William S. Burroughs und Northern Soul. CB-Funk wurde eine weitere, unwahrscheinlich klingende Inspirationsquelle: „CB radio was important at the time as an alternative method of communication“, fährt Kirk fort: „We were thinking about doing a pirate radio at that time, which never happened, but buried in the sounds before ‘Red Mask’, are clips of CB radio transmissions.”

So bleibt Red Mecca bis heute die verblüffende Momentaufnahme einer Band zwischen Entwicklung und Experiment. Einer Band, die anders klang, als alle anderen, die es seinerzeit gab (und vermutlich bis heute gibt).

Der Reihe der Cabaret Voltaire Releases setzt sich fort mit der Veröffentlichung eines Box-Sets auf Vinyl und CD im Herbst: #8385 (Collected Works 1983-1985), die vier remasterte Alben der klassichen Mittelperiode der Cabs umfasst: The Crackdown (1983), Micro-Phonies (1984), Drinking Gasoline (1985) und The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord (1985) – dazu kommen Bonus CDs- und DVDs.

#7885 (Electro Punk to Techno Pop 1978 – 1985) wird im kommenden Jahr zum ersten Mal alle Schaffensphasen von Cabaret Voltaire umfassen.
