[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Kontinum plays Edit Select

DJ:
Kontinum

About the concept:
Here is the ninety-eighth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers. or released on a label (and its sublabels. and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Kontinum’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by Edit Select.

About Kontinum:
After moving to Leipzig from his hometown Lübeck in 2015, the trained drummer and experienced musician quickly developed a fascination with the impulsive energy and dissociative feel of the music he experienced at Leipzigs’s prime techno club Institut fuer Zukunft. This affinity drove him to start the now renowned Nebulakollektiv in 2017 and consequently establish himself as a local DJ landing gigs at Institut für Zukunft and Distillery.

He released on Circular Limited, Lowless and Oslated and more recently also joined the roster of the NovaFuture family with the track “Narkonon”.

Text by Felix Ansmann

About Edit Select:
Tony Scott has been producing electronic music since the early nineties under various pseudonyms, He established the Edit Select project, as well as its eponymous label, in 2007, focusing on atmospheric yet stripped-down, back-to-basics techno tracks for club use. Several 12″s appeared, including releases on labels like Ostgut Ton and Figure, as well as remixes for the likes of Speedy J, Chris Liebing, and VCMG. Edit Select’s debut full-length, Phlox, appeared on the German label Prologue in 2014. During the same year, the artist released an edit of Teste’s classic 1992 track “The Wipe.” Collaborations with Dino Sabatini and Mike Parker followed, as well as singles on CLR, Dreiklang and Semantica. In 2016, Edit Select and Antonio Ruscito released the deep, spacy collaborative LP Visitors – Projections. The following year, Edit Select’s The Bridge EP was released by Soma, which had previously been home to the majority of Scott’s earlier work under the name Percy X, including three full-lengths and nearly two dozen singles. Shortly following 2018’s Horizon EP, the label released the full-length Cyclical Undulations, easily the most expansive, accomplished Edit Select work to date.

Kontinum About His Choice:
I choose Edit Select for my episode because for me his minimalistic and driving sound is the epitome of a dissociative sonic experience.

The idea of creating a set by only using his tracks went around in my head for a long time so I’m very happy to be able to finally implement it.

[Mix]: Jan Wagner – NovaFuture Blog Mix April 2020

DJ:
Jan Wagner

Introduction:
Jan Wagner is a pianist and producer. With his personal work he explores a simplicity of expression, one that maximises the emotional truth of each composition. He’s fascinated by the music hidden beneath the surface: overlapping overtones, textures and the sounds created by the piano’s intricate mechanism (clicks, creaks etc). Over the years, Jan mixed a whole lotta records for Berlin-based techno label Ostgut, which might explain his inclinations towards minimalism and the unwavering commitment to a sonic efficiency and immediacy. He’s been working at the legendary Faust Studio Scheer, alongside Hans Joachim Irmler, for over a decade. He can also be often spotted at the Hitipapa Studio of Pola Roy and Judith Holoferenes. Jan’s debut record entitled Nummern was released on Klangbad and Quiet Love Records.

About the concept:
Here is the ninety-seventh instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers) or released on a label (and its sublabels) and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Sekulahr’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by VSK.

About Sekulahr:
Sekulahr is an Istanbul based DJ/producer and a well-known name of the local techno scene. He is also the co-founder of Vast Perception collective/label and, has been organizing events to contribute to the development of underground techno scene in Turkey since 2017. He first came into contact with music during his early childhood years by starting to play his mother’s old classic guitar and, thereafter he had a chance to perform several genres such as blues, funk, jazz and rock in various bands till he met techno music during his late college years. Since that time, his perception of music has been enlarging and, he started to aim at finding/creating his own sound. In his performances, he is focused on building dense industrial atmospheres blended with offbeat elements and powerful low ends.

About VSK:
Francesco Visconti, better known as VSK, is an Italian techno dj and producer, born in Rome in 1986 and based in Berlin.

Since his earliest youth he has had a huge passion for electronic music, and through hanging out at the famous record store from the Capital “Remix”, he was introduced to the world of djing when he was only 16 years old.

He has got familiar to different forms of techno, his style ranging from a sound usually very hard and dark, often with industrial influences, to a very different one, deeper and more mental, both still easily recognizable as coming from the same mind.

At the same time he met the artist Ken Karter, who introduced him to the world of production and mastering. He began an education as an audio-engineer and sound-designer, in music and especially in television, working in different recording studios; currently he does this alongside his artistic career.

In 2010 he and his friends Conrad Van Orton and Vilix started their own label “Consumer Recreation Service”, which got immediate support from big names in the international techno scene, currently he has been handling “CRS ltd” series, focused on a darker and more industrial sound.

Over the years he has released music on many other important labels such as “Ear To Ground, Sonntag Morgen,Genesa, Planet Rhythm, on which he has an important collaboration with the Italian icon Giorgio Gigli, “Silent Age Ep”.

In 2016 he also signed an extended six-track Ep with Conrad Van Orton on Developer’s imprint Modularz (USA) and in 2018 on historical SOMA records under the name of

“Symmetrical Behaviuor”.

In 2017 he started performing live, both individually and as part of a duo with the Serbian artist Scalameriya. This collaboration brought to several relevant releases on the British labels Power Vacuum and the legendary Perc Trax, as well as leading to their appearance in the MORD box 002.

At the same time he took part in the latest VA on the amazing “47” label along with Ancient Methods, OAKE and the label owner Tommy Four Seven. He also signed 47’s third solo Ep, following those by Headless Horseman and Killawatt.
