schlagstrom came into existence in august 2003. far beyond the mainstream, special platform for experimental art and music in berlin.

3 days of experimental electronica, rhythm´noise, avantgarde, industrial, noise, ambient, broken beats, installations, performances, exhibition, djs and our special train cocktail lounge. the concerts are indoor (2 stages)

we have discovered a very special venue, which fascinates us with its mechanic-industrial atmosphere and a yet „untouched” and unused artistic aura: the old depot betriebswerk schöneweide. to date, the large areal from ancient reichsbahn times is used by the association “berliner dampflokfreunde e.v.” as a kind of museum of old trains, steam locomotives and numerous other historical machines of railway.

the so called “dampflok halle”. the schweisserraum will be used for experimental concerts, audio-visual installations and further programmes. we have a large outdoor area and an ambient music garden with an outdoor bar and many seating options which you can use if the weather is fine. besides bbq we offer homemade meals for vegetarians and vegans, and also sweets. the betriebsbahnhof is ideally located and can be easily reached by s-bahn, for example in 12 minutes from friedrichshain-ostkreuz.

please come by train, train´s drive all night.

Berghain celebrates its tenth anniversary at the former heat and power station near Berlin’s Ostbahnhof.

The exhibition “10” at Halle am Berghain with works by various visual artists will be the prelude to the anniversary. This listed space – formerly the teleheating center of the houses on Stalin-Allee (today: Karl-Marx-Allee / Frankfurter Allee) – is in its original condition and is only occasionally open to the general public.

Since the opening of Berghain in 2004, the triumvirate of music, arts and clubbing has been a central aspect and adds up to an entity. Many of the artists involved in the exhibition are closely associated with the club since its launch. Some also know Berghain as their workplace, with close connections and interactions resulting from the relationship with the venue. With the exhibition “10”, Berghain places a special emphasis on these visual artists connected to the club and dedicates the prelude to the club birthday with an homage to them.

Through a programmatic development of cross-platform and cross-cultural projects and event series – see below for an overview – Berghain has left its mark as an institution. In the past, Berghain already invited its staff members to show their works at Halle am Berghain (“ALLE”, 2011). With a natural combination of opera, ballet, theatre, fashion, and Neue Musik, the relationship between club culture, arts production and its aesthetics has been re-shaped constantly. This regular repetition of investigations regarding space, sound, imagery and movement adjusted the relationship to the club by the Berghain-originators as well as the general public.

All of the invited artists understand their projects as a reflection of the specific space and institution. Most of the works for “10” have been developed specially for this occasion. Topics include club culture, the phenomenon of mass, non elitism, cult of the body and tattoos, neoclassicism and the ruinous rawness of the building.

Das Berghain im ehemaligen Heizkraftwerk am Berliner Ostbahnhof feiert sein zehnjähriges Bestehen.

Auftakt des Jubiläums wird die Ausstellung „10“ mit bildenden Künstlerinnen und Künstlern in der Halle am Berghain sein. Diese denkmalgeschützte Halle, die ehemals das Zentrum der Fernwärmeerzeugung für die Häuser in der ehemaligen Stalin-Allee (heute Karl-Marx-Allee / Frankfurter Allee) bildete, ist nur in großen Abständen öffentlich zugänglich und befindet sich in originalem Zustand.

Seit der Eröffnung des Berghain 2004 ist das Dreigestirn aus Musik, Kunst und Club zentral und verbindet sich zu einer fühlbaren Einheit. Viele der beteiligten Künstler stehen dem Club bereits seit seiner Entstehung nah. Mehrere kennen das Berghain auch als ihren Arbeitsplatz, woraus sich intensive Verbindungen und Wechselwirkungen zwischen ihnen und dem Haus entwickelten. Mit der Ausstellung „10“ rückt das Berghain die mit ihm verwobenen Künstler erstmals ins Zentrum und widmet ihnen den Geburtstagsauftakt. Das Haus versteht die Ausstellung als Hommage an die bildenden Künstler, die bis heute fester Bestandteil der Clubgemeinschaft sind und so wesentlich zur Stimulierung von Sound-, Licht und Raumkonzepten beitragen.

Durch die programmatische Entwicklung von formübergreifenden Projekten und Veranstaltungsreihen (eine Auswahl ist am Ende dieser Pressemitteilung aufgelistet) hat das Berghain aber auch als Institution diverse Akzente gesetzt, unter anderem mit einer Einladung an die Mitarbeiter des Berghain, ihre Werke in der Halle am Berghain zu zeigen. In selbstverständlicher Zusammenführung von Oper, Ballett, Theater, Mode und Neue Musik wurde das Verhältnis von Clubkultur und künstlerischer Produktion neu bestimmt und ästhetische Vorzeichen verändert. Was sich ereignete, waren Raum-, Klang-, Bild- und Bewegungserforschungen, die das Verhältnis der Berghain-Macher zu ihrem Club und natürlich auch die Außenwahrnehmung neu justierten.

Aus den Selbstbewegungskräften des Underground hat sich in zehn Jahren ein Kultur-Cluster entwickelt, der nach wie vor als stabil vertikal orientierte Kathedralenarchitektur in Erscheinung tritt wie auch als dröhnend entrückter Schwarmerzeuger. Hier wird ein Lebensgefühl des Berliner Unzeitgemäßen produziert – wie gleichermaßen reproduziert, das zugleich vielfältige Experimentalformen der Kunst in einem rohen Beton-Szenario herausfordert. Emotional spannungsvoll integriert, muss offen bleiben, was das für die Kunst bzw. für das Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum des Berghain bedeutet, das noch längst nicht seine Entwicklungsphase abgeschlossen hat. Während sich die Konzertveranstaltungen musikalisch von Höhepunkt zu Höhepunkt bewegen, hält das Berghain einen Moment inne, analysiert den Veränderungsprozess und entwirft einen Ausblick in die Zukunft.

Die zur Ausstellung eingeladenen Künstler verstehen ihre Projekte, von denen die meisten speziell für diesen Anlass entwickelt werden, als Reflexion von Ort und Institution. Als Themen werden auf künstlerisch ganz individuelle Weise angesprochen: Clubkultur, das Phänomen Masse, das Anti-Elitäre, Körperkult und Tätowierung, der Neoklassizismus und die ruinöse Rohheit des Gebäudes.
