About the concept:
Here is the hundredth(!) instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers. or released on a label (and its sublabels. and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Reshift’s mix of stuff produced or remixed by Oliver Chesler, better known as The Horrorist.

About Reshift:
Once upon a time, there was a guy named Justin. That‘s me, also known as Reshift, born and raised in the Ruhr area. … Co-Founder of Purify Records & Co-Founder of Acid Wave Records

About Oliver Chesler:
The Horrorist, Oliver Chesler is one of the best known and loved electronic musicians.

Recording since 1989 he and has released over 80 12″ singles and 5 full length albums. He had a Number 1 hit on the German Dance Charts (DDC) with the song “One Night in NYC” and his album “Manic Panic” went to Number 1 on the German Alternative Chart (DAC). The scope of his music catalog is huge and he has recorded for every major label (Universal, Sony, Warner, etc…) and all the best known techno labels (Tresor, Gigolo, Industrial Strength, Neue Heimat, Credo, etc..). The Horrorist has worked with the biggest names in techno including Chris Liebing, Ben Sims, The Hacker, Arnaud Rebotini, Marc Acardipane, Black Asteriod, John Selway, Frankie Bones, Ricardo Villalobos, Haujobb, Alex Bau, Radical G, Frank Kvitta, DJ Rush and more have all remixed and produced with The Horrorist. His subsequent albums “Attack Decay” (2007), “Joyless Pleasure” (2011) and “Fire Funmania” (2013) have been met rave reviews! He is currently working on his 6th studio album called “Separate Dimension” due late 2018 on the Berlin based Aufnahme und Wiedergabe. The first single from Separate Dimension is called Programmed and has been remixed by Silent Servant, Thomas P. Heckmann and Lado.

Although dance orientated most of his songs have vocals and usually progress to a crescendo at or near the end. Music journalist of the Village Voice and several books on electronic music, Simon Reynolds called Oliver Chesler “My favorite contemporary American singer-songwriter.”. A wide range of influences from Depeche Mode to Leonard Cohen to DAF factor into Chesler’s song writing manifesting into a completely original sound. His ability to make song structured music work on the dance floor is a big key to his success. His vocal technique is quite original and unique. He also refuses not to stick in one genre so on any given record expect styles from indie new wave, electro, EBM, techno, to synthpunk.

Oliver Chesler also ran the famous Things to Come Records from 1995-2007. The label will start up again in 2018 with the team behind Killikill and Flexiwave (Metabanana Airforce Distribution). “

Things To Come does exactly what the name suggests, and that gives the future something to look forward for…..” – Frankie Bones

The Horrorist is a sensational live act. A mixture of industrial attitude and punk style with synth-techno music. Playing a set that goes from minimal or new wave all the way to hardcore and everything in between, there is something for everyone. But the biggest thing about the Horrorist’s sets is the interactivity that comes with having a live performer that a crowd is capable of understanding. The show is comprised of Chesler’s in your face vocals, video projection and live drum machine and synth. The Horrorist performs regularly around the world and has played in every major nightclub and for most major event organizations. He’s wowed crowds from LA to Malta. Definitely something else, check it out if at all possible!!

The Horrorist is one of those unique artists that only come around once in a while. He is a big influence on the electronic music scene and will be for years to come.

Reshift About His Choice:
While living in Berlin for the past 5 years, I didn’t come around meeting Jürgen at the local nightlife. We first met during an Aufnahme+Wiedergabe night at Tresor. One of the main acts this night was The Horrorist. While drinking the fourth Moscow Mule at the bar with Jürgen, we realized that we are into the same kind of music and both dig the work of Oliver Chesler and all of his aliases. Shortly after meeting Jürgen at Tresor that night, he asked me to do a mix for his ABC plays XYZ series on NovaFuture.

While thinking back and forth for days what kind of mix I will do, the conclusion was staring into my face the entire time – „Reshift plays Oliver Chesler“. I chose to play Oliver’s records because his work influenced and accompanied me from the very beginning of my journey of digging electronic music. The variety of his productions made me discover many artists and labels that also had a great impact on my musical development.

That said, I want to present you 50 shades of Oliver Chesler. Enjoy!

Altrd Being About His Choice:
I chose Zooloft for the ABC plays XYZ mix because it was always a sought after Label that i was collecting their wax since my early days of DJing it’s a label that was created by Georgio Gigli & Obtane as an output for their own musical projects together and collaborations with some other great artist and some really ace Remixes. Zooloft as a label I can say is one of those projects that was very well curated and it has an element of rarity since it is a vinyl only label and had no represses I was lucky enough to come across this label early on and any time I could find them I would buy some of their presses, I can say this label has a very deep and mystical sound that has influenced my personal taste in a big way as very few labels have in my years in being involved with DJing, Producing and promoting Techno music.

Here is the ninety-eighth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Kontinum’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by Edit Select.

About Kontinum:
After moving to Leipzig from his hometown Lübeck in 2015, the trained drummer and experienced musician quickly developed a fascination with the impulsive energy and dissociative feel of the music he experienced at Leipzigs’s prime techno club Institut fuer Zukunft. This affinity drove him to start the now renowned Nebulakollektiv in 2017 and consequently establish himself as a local DJ landing gigs at Institut für Zukunft and Distillery.

He released on Circular Limited, Lowless and Oslated and more recently also joined the roster of the NovaFuture family with the track “Narkonon”.

Text by Felix Ansmann

About Edit Select:
Tony Scott has been producing electronic music since the early nineties under various pseudonyms, He established the Edit Select project, as well as its eponymous label, in 2007, focusing on atmospheric yet stripped-down, back-to-basics techno tracks for club use. Several 12″s appeared, including releases on labels like Ostgut Ton and Figure, as well as remixes for the likes of Speedy J, Chris Liebing, and VCMG. Edit Select’s debut full-length, Phlox, appeared on the German label Prologue in 2014. During the same year, the artist released an edit of Teste’s classic 1992 track “The Wipe.” Collaborations with Dino Sabatini and Mike Parker followed, as well as singles on CLR, Dreiklang and Semantica. In 2016, Edit Select and Antonio Ruscito released the deep, spacy collaborative LP Visitors – Projections. The following year, Edit Select’s The Bridge EP was released by Soma, which had previously been home to the majority of Scott’s earlier work under the name Percy X, including three full-lengths and nearly two dozen singles. Shortly following 2018’s Horizon EP, the label released the full-length Cyclical Undulations, easily the most expansive, accomplished Edit Select work to date.

I choose Edit Select for my episode because for me his minimalistic and driving sound is the epitome of a dissociative sonic experience.

He is also the co-founder of Vast Perception collective/label and, has been organizing events to contribute to the development of underground techno scene in Turkey since 2017. He first came into contact with music during his early childhood years by starting to play his mother’s old classic guitar and, thereafter he had a chance to perform several genres such as blues, funk, jazz and rock in various bands till he met techno music during his late college years. Since that time, his perception of music has been enlarging and, he started to aim at finding/creating his own sound. In his performances, he is focused on building dense industrial atmospheres blended with offbeat elements and powerful low ends.

About VSK:
Francesco Visconti, better known as VSK, is an Italian techno dj and producer, born in Rome in 1986 and based in Berlin.

Since his earliest youth he has had a huge passion for electronic music, and through hanging out at the famous record store from the Capital “Remix”, he was introduced to the world of djing when he was only 16 years old.

He has got familiar to different forms of techno, his style ranging from a sound usually very hard and dark, often with industrial influences, to a very different one, deeper and more mental, both still easily recognizable as coming from the same mind.

At the same time he met the artist Ken Karter, who introduced him to the world of production and mastering. He began an education as an audio-engineer and sound-designer, in music and especially in television, working in different recording studios; currently he does this alongside his artistic career.

In 2010 he and his friends Conrad Van Orton and Vilix started their own label “Consumer Recreation Service”, which got immediate support from big names in the international techno scene, currently he has been handling “CRS ltd” series, focused on a darker and more industrial sound.

Over the years he has released music on many other important labels such as “Ear To Ground, Sonntag Morgen,Genesa, Planet Rhythm, on which he has an important collaboration with the Italian icon Giorgio Gigli, “Silent Age Ep”.

In 2016 he also signed an extended six-track Ep with Conrad Van Orton on Developer’s imprint Modularz (USA) and in 2018 on historical SOMA records under the name of

“Symmetrical Behaviuor”.

In 2017 he started performing live, both individually and as part of a duo with the Serbian artist Scalameriya. This collaboration brought to several relevant releases on the British labels Power Vacuum and the legendary Perc Trax, as well as leading to their appearance in the MORD box 002.

At the same time he took part in the latest VA on the amazing “47” label along with Ancient Methods, OAKE and the label owner Tommy Four Seven. He also signed 47’s third solo Ep, following those by Headless Horseman and Killawatt.

[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Manuel Münster plays René Pawlowitz

DJ:
Manuel Münster

About the concept:
Here is the ninety-sixth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers) or released on a label (and its sublabels) and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Manuel Münster’s mix of tracks/remixes produced by René Pawlowitz.

About Manuel Münster:
Sometimes, one experience is all it takes to give someone’s life a new direction. This certainly proved true for Manuel Münster. Manuel, attracted to Berlin’s allure of countless possibilities and open-minded attitude towards alternative lifestyles, made his move to the German capital in 2008.

Manuel’s musical socialization was rooted in hardcore punk and metal, but shortly after arriving in Berlin and visiting his first techno party, he quickly immersed himself in a world that was beyond his initial musical tastes. Taking advantage of Berlin’s countless record stores dedicated to electronic music, he assembled a respectable collection of 12″s and decided to give DJing a try himself. Progressing from playing small bars and parties, he became a regular DJ at Tresor from 2011 onwards.

In 2013 Manuel further shaped Berlin’s techno footprint by hosting his own club nights called “Escapism” throughout the city. The record label of the same name emerged in 2016 with the help of a friend, providing a platform for his peers and fellow artists to release music that shared the same philosophy of Münster’s. Staying true to techno’s political element, Manuel’s DJ-sets are reflective of his perception of the world surrounding him. While mostly bleak and repetitive, groove is always the essential driving force of his sets. It is this focus that allows him to connect to, challenge and inspire his audience.

About René Pawlowitz:
René Pawlowitz – better known under his moniker Shed, Is one of the most respected techno artists in the industry today. Born in Frankfurt, René first got interested in electronic music in the early 1990s, by 2002 he had moved to Berlin and founded his own label Soloaction Records with the support of the iconic Berlin record store Hard Wax.

On his own label he released his fist EP as Shed ‘Red Planet Express’ in 2004. 2008 saw the release of the first album ‘Shedding The Past’ which went on to be named album of the year by Resident Advisor. Since then René has cemented himself as an evergreen producer with releases on a number of household labels including Ostgut Ton and Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons imprint to name a few, adding to his impressive work under alias including Head High and The Higher.

whether it be through track selection in his DJs sets or the raw power of his live show, Shed manages to merge rough dance floor skeletons with detailed melodies, harmonic structures and airy arrangements for an evocative performance that isn’t easily forgotten.

Manuel Münster About His Choice:
Shed’s productions have been a constant companion ever since I dove into the Techno scene in 2008. Though it is a tired cliché, Berghain and Panorama Bar were influential during those early days of going down the rabbit hole. Naturally, I spent a lot of time listening to Marcel Dettmann’s „Berghain 02“ and Cassy’s „Panorama Bar 01“ mixes back then. Both mix-CDs feature Shed-tracks that are still among my favourites, two of these also made it onto this mix (the Luke Hess-remix and „Well Done“). They proved to be an influential cornerstone of what was to come after and sparked my interest in Shed’s productions.

During this mix’s preparation, I was pleasantly surprised by how many Shed-records I own. Even after settling on the final running order, I came across more Shed-records in my collection, some of which I had forgotten for a long time. Compiling this mix was a trip down memory lane, reminiscent of my first years in Berlin, that I thoroughly enjoyed. I hope you enjoy listening to it just as much!
