Press Info:
Interior, to be released on 23rd of February 2024, is Rosa Anschütz’s most introspective and vulnerable album to date; an insightful and powerfully crafted album which dives within but also urges to turn to the outside. The record operates as a meditative sonic and lyrical journey across genres, with an analog dark-romanticism rooted in the melancholia of neo-folk, the elegance and solemness of modern classic and the grace and baroque of sacred music. It is both an introspection, an “enhancement of one’s thoughts” as she phrases it, and a quest for harmonious living.
The artist’s observations of interiors – the ones lying within herself, the ones resulting from her invention and imagination, the ones imposed onto her and inherited – lead her to touch on the broader possibility of cohesion with natural and spiritual elements, and of reconciliation with the self and what is lodged and hidden within it. What paths can one take to express what lies inside of them?
Rosa Anschütz is a twenty-six-year-old singer-songwriter and artist based in Berlin, Germany. Seeking to transform daily observations and interrogations into hauntingly beautiful and crafted records, her poetic and sharp lyrics oscillate between singing and spoken words in distinctively emotionally driven combinations of electronic music and analog instruments. Her 2019 EP Rigid was followed by two AC produced Albums Votive and Goldener Strom.
“I’ve been losing the faith to see,” sings Rosa on By Gaining Many Somethings, the opening track of Interior. Along the nine tracks of the record, this faith is looked for within the difficult lessons of heartbreak, natural beauty, family ghosts, the mysticism of spirituality. It is partly found in the traverse flute, the trumpet and the organ. The instruments emphasize Anschütz’s cold and delicate singing and reciting, the entirely analog composition of Interior setting Rosa’s voice and lyrics as the genuine backbone of the album. “We wanted to give more space to the voice than we ever did,” say Rosa and her long-term producer Jan Wagner, “to have as little limitations as possible”. Entirely produced within Hans Joachim Irmlers Faust Studio in Scheer and released on Klangbad, Interior is thus a profound and thought-provoking record, whose distinctive prose is rooted in the scenic rugged landscapes, gothic castles and unspoilt wilderness of folklore and the High Lands.
As a transmedia artist, Rosa always ensures to provide a visual frame to her pro- jects. For Interior, she has stitched thousands of sequins into nine different pieces all part of a single curtain she poses in front of for the cover of the album. She stares here into the eyes of those looking at and listening to her, clad in a sunflower embroidered shirt.
Interiors are subjective – the further or the closer one stands to what they are observing, the different the image they are receiving. Interior, the third solo album of Rosa Anschütz, is therefore an intimate and complex journey into beauty and vulnerability. It is a mesmerizing, ceremonious album, crafted with strength and assurance to gently welcome and challenge its listener.
It establishes Rosa Anschütz as a stunningly talented artist, poet and singer-songwriter, whose sharpness gives her the courage to look at what lies within herself to then dare you to look at what she is, at last, observing.
