When I was asked last year to put together the new Berghain mix, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Almost immediately I had a general idea and direction for what it could and should sound like – even though I also knew that achieving the vision would be a challenge. At its core, the mix represents the variety and dynamism swirling around my musical cosmos; one filled with different strands and eras of Berlin club culture since the fall of the Wall, in all of its unpredictable and weirder facets.

In this sense, it was important for me not only to include different stylistic elements and my tendency towards all things funky – from loop techno, bass and breaks to swung hats, UK funky, electro and more. But it was equally important that the mix truly reflected the energy in the club and on the dancefloor, which is why it was recorded live at a Klubnacht in Berghain in November 2017. For that set, I made the decision to play vinyl only and had dubplates made of all previously unreleased tracks in order to maintain a consistent sonic characteristic and uniform mixing approach. Of course, vinyl is also my favorite medium.

For the mix I selected tracks that had inspired me personally, including both new music and older gems from my record collection. Take Rok, for example. I remember the first time I’d ever heard techno was at UFO, when I danced the entire night through to Rok’s set. In the years that followed we would DJ together in Tresor, Suicide, Ultraschall, and the music he played and produced grabbed me and simply wouldn’t let me go. His track “Coke N Shit” and Space DJz’ “Side On” remain timeless, while Noncompliant’s “Women’s Work” or “Gannets” by Substance aka DJ Pete have secured a place in my sets as future classics. Espen Lauritzen’s “F/T/S” in particular represents an absolutely key track to the mix, with a raw and driving energy that embodies the essence of what I was trying to achieve as a whole.

For the accompanying Berghain 08 12”, I managed to secure tracks from longtime friends Electric Indigo and Boris. Electric Indigo I first met as a customer at Hard Wax before eventually joining her behind the counter – although we properly got to know each other during a DJ set I played at Subversiv. Opening the mix with “Registers” – and including it on the 12” – was an honor. Boris and I have have known each other since the mid-90s when we both worked at the offices of Dubplates and Mastering. We have always both loved and played disco in our sets, which is where our collaborative track “Div’Hain” gets its groove. In addition, rRoxymore’s melodic bass on “Tropicalcore” and Stefan’s “Panther” turn the 12” into a kind of mini-compilation with four very different tracks that go in four different musical directions – and half by female producers, which was also important for me.

Process-wise, recording the mix live was surprisingly fun, as I was constantly getting feedback from the crowd. This made the work involved a lot easier, despite the many moving parts and the fact that there was no chance for do-overs. Also, in addition to the mix, I also set up a mic within the club in order to capture the atmosphere of the space. I then added these additional field recordings to the finished version, though not for the entire duration of the mix due to the amount of diffusion the recording contained. However, their strategic placement and mixing live in front of a crowd has, I believe, allowed me to capture the evening’s raw energy.

Last but not least, I would like to dedicate this mix to all those who believed in me and have supported and accompanied me on my long and very personal musical journey. And I would especially like to thank DJ Niplz (R.I.P.) to whom I will always remain truly grateful, Errorsmith for his sincere friendship and KILLA, who supported me with investing her heart and mind throughout the project.

Als ich letztes Jahr gefragt wurde, ob ich den nächsten Berghain-Mix machen möchte, zögerte ich nicht lange. Ich hatte sofort eine Idee im Sinn, wie ich ihn gestalten würde und wie er klingen könnte und sollte – obwohl ich wusste, dass die Umsetzung eine anspruchsvolle Aufgabe werden wird. Der Mix repräsentiert die innerhalb meines musikalischen Kosmos’ wirbelnde Vielfalt und Dynamik; der angefüllt ist mit verschiedenen Orten und Epochen Berliner Clubkultur seit der Wende, mit all ihren unvorhersehbaren und merkwürdigen Facetten.

Mein Berghain-Mix sollte verschiedene Stile beinhalten – von loopendem Techno zum Einstimmen über eine etwas härtere Gangart zum Abraven bis hin zu Electro und Bass zum beschwingten Austrudeln – und außerdem meine Neigung zu einer gewissen Funkiness abbilden. Er sollte möglichst nah die Energie widerspiegeln, die auch auf dem Dancefloor des Clubs zu finden ist. Also nahm ich den Mix im Berghain bei einer Klubnacht im November 2017 auf. Für dieses Set entschied ich mich, ausschließlich mit Vinyl zu spielen und unveröffentlichtes Material auf Dubplates zu schneiden, damit ich eine einheitliche Klangcharakteristik und ein gleichbleibendes Handling mit meinem Lieblingsmedium erhalte.

Für den Mix habe ich nach Musik gesucht, die mich persönlich stark inspiriert hat – dabei habe ich neue Tracks aber auch etliche Schmuckstücke in meinem Plattenarchiv gefunden. Nehmen wir zum Beispiel Rok. Bei meiner allerersten Begegnung mit Techno im damaligen UFO habe ich die ganze Nacht zu seinem Set getanzt. Später dann habe ich mit ihm zusammen aufgelegt: Tresor, Suicide, Ultraschall. Die Musik damals hat dich einfach gepackt und nicht mehr losgelassen; jeder Fluchtversuch war zwecklos. Rok’s „Coke N Shit“ und „Side On“ von den Space DJz sind solche älteren Stücke, „Women’s Work“ von Noncompliant oder „Gannets“ von Substance aka DJ Pete sind brandneu und stehen dem in nichts nach. Das absolute Schlüsselstück für den Mix jedoch ist Espen Lauritzens „F/T/S“, der mit seiner rauhen und treibenden Energie genau die Essenz dessen darstellt, was ich bei der Gestaltung des Mixes zu erreichen gesuchte.

Für die Berghain 08-Exclusives EP auf Ostgut Ton konnte ich langjährige Mitstreiter wie Electric Indigo oder Boris gewinnen. Electric Indigo begegnete ich zuerst als Kunde im Hard Wax, bevor ich schließlich selbst hinter dem Verkaufstresen stand. Einmal kamen Electric Indigo und Rok vorbei, als ich bei einer Montagsveranstaltung, die von DJ Niplz kuratiert wurde, im Subversiv auflegte. Ich habe ganz schön geschwitzt bei so viel Prominenz. Aber ich glaube, ich habe es ganz gut hinbekommen, denn sie haben fröhlich getanzt. Ich habe an diesem Abend frische Electro-Cuts auf Direct Beat und Egyptian Lover mit Techno gemischt, was bis dahin eher wenig verbreitet war. Mit Boris habe ich zusammen bei Dubplates & Mastering im Office gearbeitet. Da wir beide Disco lieben und spielen, ist unser gemeinsames Stück auch ein bisschen in diese Richtung gewachsen. Neben den beiden alten Hasen gibt es noch relativ frische Gesichter wie rRoxymore und Stefan Rein, die ich als Künstler beide sehr schätze. Ihre Musik hat mich von Anfang an begeistert: die melodischeren Bass-Stücke von rRoxymore und die knackigen Ravetunes von Stefan Rein. Das Ergebnis ist eine Mini-Compilation von vier unterschiedlichen Stilen – die Hälfte der Stücke von Produzentinnen, das war mir ebenso wichtig.

Die Aufnahme in Club hat viel Spaß gemacht, denn währenddessen hatte ich die ganze Zeit Feedback vom Publikum. Das erleichtert die Arbeit ungemein, obwohl natürlich bei so einer Live-Aufnahme alles sitzen muss und eine Wiederholung nicht möglich ist. Zusätzlich habe ich für die Aufnahme ein Mikrofon installiert, um die Atmosphäre im Club einzufangen. Diese Field Recordings habe ich in den fertigen Mix eingeblendet – allerdings nicht über die gesamte Playtime, da es in diesem Raum doch sehr viele Reflektionen gibt, die den Hörgenuß zu Hause eher etwas trüben würden. Für die Umsetzung des Mixes gemäß meiner Ausgangsidee hat alles in allem super funktioniert. Ich konnte, so glaube ich, etwas von der Energie dieser Nacht einfangen.

Diesen Mix widme ich allen, die ihr Vertrauen in mich gesetzt haben und mich auf meiner langen, persönlichen sowie musikalischen Reise begleitet und unterstützt haben – allen voran DJ Niplz (R.I.P.), dem ich meinen Start zu verdanken habe, Errorsmith für seine aufrichtige Freundschaft und KILLA, die mich durch ihren unermüdlichen Einsatz von Herz und Verstand bei diesem Projekt maßgeblich unterstützt hat.
