Principles of Newspeak is the first release to emerge on Denkfabrik, a new imprint curated by Berlin-based Québécois producer Nicolas Bougaïeff. The album includes 3 tracks from his recent Cognitive Resonance 12” which inaugurated the return of seminal British label NovaMute.

Inspired by the appendix to George Orwell’s 1984, Principles of Newspeak is about the war on truth itself. An exercise in gleefully distorted harmonies and expressionist noise, the album disrupts the 4/4 pulse with alternative beats and blinding sheets of rhythmical distortion. Principles of Newspeak draws on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms by opposing relentless uptempo workouts with inexorably slower techno experiments.

The title track sets a tone of bold and raw gravitas with cascading synth lines and distorted half-time beats. Hard-edged noise blasts and cathartic harmonies, punctuated by a soaring climactic melody, trace the daring journey of ‘Room 101’. In ‘Silence’, rich textural drones and distant arpeggios conjure up a final landscape of crashing sonified lies.

Principles of Newspeak draws on diverse influences: the cinematic exuberance of Clint Mansell, the tooled distortion of Ben Frost, and the stark post-minimalism of William Duckworth.

Holding a doctorate in music, Bougaïeff has performed ground-breaking shows including cello and live processing at renowned Berlin venues such as Wilde Renate, OHM and KitKat. He designed the controllers for Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman tour and collaborated on a 12” with Max Cooper.

Forthcoming releases on Denkfabrik include Vocabulary C, a collection of locked grooves inspired by Principles of Newspeak.

‘Macht Macht Zement’—what does it mean? 80s drums, synths and vocals, almost without context.

Fallbeil, two soon-to-be men (aka boys), finish tracks at the rate of butchers kneading meatballs. Due to laziness and a lack of technique, everything gets recorded on one track and immediately thrown into the frier.

Nothing is planned. First up, school detention followed by rough LoFi rap. The album contains a wide variety of themes; from mailmen to warthogs, from latecomers to sensible conversation, every track is created out of spontaneity. Two very short tracks on this album date back to 1999, when the boys performed as ‘Funky Granatos’ in the local youth centers. Sadly, their performances weren’t successful. Nobody wanted to listen to them and almost every concert ended in mass brawls.

The track ‘Postman’ comes from the duo’s side project Grand Malheur and was recorded in 2015 in Bronxfeld. More output from this project will appear on various EPs in the near future.

The album title ‘Macht Macht Zement’ originates from Tom Pötgen. Tom always wanted to throw the sacred hand grenades. We hope he does that right now!

Exemplifying this with the 3 cuts on “The Fox And The Raven”: driven, hypnotic, techno with a chasing sense of urgency, balanced with eerie lamenting melodies, perfectly fitting the tales of lore chosen to illustrate each release like a volume in an odyssey.

Concluding this chapter, a limited pressing of 300 reproductions serigraphed, embossed and scented, echoing how like fables, music, occupies a tangible moment in the listeners life and space.
