Three tracks from gloomy core to cozy glory, Resilience Interlude is a journey through carefully crafted ambiences. ‘Darkness’ opens the EP with a polytemporal conversation between dark arpeggios and a biting drum beat. ‘Resilience’ delivers a charged atmosphere into which an ominous bell slowly melts down. Drums make a comeback in ‘Lightness’, this time offering a hopeful contrast. Arpeggio voices unfold at different tempi, once again highlighting the artist’s taste for rhythmic experimentation.

With Dreamscape, Nicolas Bougaïeff adds a new entry to his backlog release series on Denkfabrik. In this three-track EP, written and produced in 2014, he explores evocative melodic soundscapes. The record also features early experiments with rhythm, as notes move off the grid and back in a gentle rubato. The warm tone of a Minimoog provides the main voice throughout. Surrounded in opener ‘Descent’ by a deep pulse and delicate bells, it later takes center stage in ‘Aria’ as a concise and emotional solo. Melodies evolve with a hint of chromaticism in the title track to close the record on a moving cinematic note.

On Saccades et Paroxysmes, his new EP on Denkfabrik, Nicolas Bougaïeff precariously balances haunting piano loops and dense live electronics. Improvisations by French pianist Justine Ekhaut are melted down in a series of electronic textures. The tension and quick movement of ‘Saccade’ tracks are contrasted by the deep elation of the ‘Paroxysme’ tracks. Bougaïeff explains that the record ‘reflects personal experiences where I explored relationships by instinct, following my curiosity, and trying to make sense of it all a couple years later’. The EP, recorded and produced in the summer of 2017, follows up his 2016 album Les Sauvageries where he first combined classical instruments and dystopian club music.

[~] marks a stunning new beginning for French artist Nil Hartman. The record combines a warm sense of improvisation with a sleek computer music aesthetic.

Hartman created [~] through livecoding, an approach using text commands in a programming language to compose and perform music in realtime. What you hear on the record is raw, unedited, one-take recordings. Hartman explains: “These versions are unique, I’ll never be able (or willing!) to play them identically.” The astonishing result is not only a technical tour-de-force but a profoundly emotional journey.

The French artist previously enjoyed early success touring Europe festivals with melody-driven club bangers. Following a complete overhaul of his studio craft through a decade of secluded experiments, he now emerges with a deeply personal approach to electronic music.

[~] was recorded live on July 12th and July 30th, 2020. All tracks arranged and performed in realtime using algorithmic langage Tidal Cycle. All sounds generated in realtime using various types of synthesis. The record was mixed and mastered by the artist.
