Einstürzende Neubauten
Introduction:
This special is about a song… one with an important impact on the electronic music you know nowadays.
It’s about “Warm Leatherette” by The Normal. The Normal was a project by Daniel Miller used to release his single “T.V.O.D / Warm Leatherette”.
The lyrics of “Warm Leatherette” reference J.G. Ballard’s novel “Crash” (1973), the music can described as electronic Post-punk with industrial sounds.
The front cover shows a crash test dummys sitting behind the steering wheel of car, on the back side of the 7 inch he put his own address and the sentence “this is a mute record”.
Impressed by the do-it-yourself attitude of the Punk scene, he wanted to release it by himself and without a label. So Daniel Miller offered it to a few independent music shops, including Rough Trade in London, where it would be played to customers.
So the legendary label Mute Records was founded….
The track became a small underground hit and has been covered by numerous artists. So we show you some of these cover version … right after a fan video of the original track.

Info:
As you surely know our absolute favourite label is Mute, founded in 1978 by the legendary Daniel Miller.
The roster include(d) influential and important musical acts such as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Fad Gadget, Goldfrapp, Grinderman, Nitzer Ebb, Renegade Soundwave and Yazoo.
It was formed initially to release the Daniel Miller’s single “T.V.O.D.”/”Warm Leatherette” which became a underground hit.
One of Mute’s most famous act were Depeche Mode, which Daniel signed for a single after seeing them as support of Fad Gadget.
The label was always one of the pioneering labels developing and supporting new music styles. So they had a several sublabels with different genres and styles like novamute for techno and electronica, Future Groove for house music, Blast First for guitar and electronic experiments, The Fine Line for soundtracks, The Grey Area for re-issues.
Most of them are now defunct but they have a new sublabel, Liberation Technologies.
More recent acts are so different artists like Josh T. Pearson, Beth Jeans Houghton, Laibach, Erasure, VCMG, Big Deal, Zola Jesus, Liars and … just announced a few months ago New Order …. and many more
To show our love for the label we created a sampler of over 16 tracks and 90mins of newer stuff (from Mute, Mute US, sublabels). So enjoy!
