Press Info:
Are you a vinyl junkie? Check this out. I’m excited to announce “Transparent.” Continuing the DIY projects in the lab, we’re currently experimenting with shapes. This is probably one of the weirdest looking records ever made. I also think it’s one of the most beautiful designs we have ever released. It’s a clear transparent 10” vinyl with an off-centre hole, housed in a clear transparent PVC sleeve. All clear, no labels, no print. Just a completely transparent object that looks pretty surreal spinning on a turntable.

One side is a bouncy jam with a drum machine and GRM Tools; the other side is a collage of material recorded from the modular, which had a half-working, half-deceased Wogglebug as a modulation source. Both sides are cut at 45 RPM. The thing I’m most proud of about this record is that the design and packaging were created in collaboration with the design studio of my son, who runs @studiopapi_ the same guy who made the scarves. More collaborations with him to be announced.

Press Info:
Ten years ago this January I managed to get the keys to a bunker. I had been looking for a space to build a lab; a space with enough room to start new projects, invite people to collaborate on music, visual art, live performances, live streaming, and any other idea that might come along. One of the ideas I wanted to try was getting a vinyl cutting machine, a lathe, to make vinyl records in-house. I liked the DIY approach; it gave me a sense of freedom. I saw it as a way to document the things that happened in the lab, through small runs of vinyl records. I loved the idea of being able to bypass the whole label planning process and cut music to vinyl on the same day it was recorded. Over the years, many sessions and collaborations have been added to the archive this way, exclusively on limited vinyl.

Fast forward ten years, and many of those initial ideas have come to fruition. STOOR Live, Stay Home Soundsystem, Knob Twiddlers Hangout, and Pink Noise have all unfolded nicely, thanks to the involvement and energy of a growing circle of collaborators. This year the focus is on further developing the vinyl cutting and custom packaging ideas that have been evolving over time. New music is currently taking shape in the studio, with a series of releases planned for the coming months.

To kick off this new series of releases, I’m re-releasing the first two records ever to come out of the STOOR project: S1 and S2, the first two editions of the vinyl archive. At the time they were intentionally released under the obscure alias JPG, with only 50 copies made. Now they are being re-released as Speedy J, digitally and on vinyl. The vinyl editions come in the classic STOOR vinyl archive packaging: each hand-numbered copy housed in 450gsm sleeves with magnetic flaps and an info pocket, complemented by anti-static, anti-dust audiophile inner sleeves.

BLCK SPD
… is Black Asteroid and Speedy J

Stoor
The city of Rotterdam, a cultural interchange that is home to some of the world’s most cutting-edge architectural projects, has also been a home base for some of the seminal artists to have defined the terrain of electronic music. It has become a highly reliable forum for audio experimentation, with all the human and technological resources necessary for artists to reach that ‘next phase’ in their creative development.

In very much the same spirit, a new sonic lab complex, STOOR – located in a basement space formerly used as a government testing agency and as a fallout shelter – has opened within the heart of Rotterdam. This generously reinforced space, open 24/7 and with no stylistic limitations placed on its guests, will be available to intrepid electronic producers (novice and veteran alike). Whether visitors arrive with plans for mixing, post-production, or building new works from scratch, this environment will provide them an unparalleled opportunity to ‘stretch out’ creatively; to peel back any lingering inhibitions and to therefore discover aspects of their sonic approach that they have not fully explored before.

Specifically designed to encourage improvisation and expressive surprises, STOOR features a number of distinct elements that are unique not just to the Netherlands, but to the entirety of international electronic music culture. It offers an unparalleled selection of music-making tools, housing a number of highly rare vintage pieces as well as modern standbys – that is to say, everything from classic keyboard synths to the newest and most advanced modular systems. Coupled with the labs’ round-the-clock nature, the lack of a “pre-set” configuration for the tools on hand allows artists a greater role in the design of their own workspace, and will lead to a fluid sense of interaction between multiple producers working within the same confines.

STOOR will not just act as a venue for spontaneous and improvised expression, but will also be a space in which a special type of documentary process takes place. Thanks to an on-site vinyl lathe, limited edition recordings of each resident producer’s work at STOOR can be created with a turnaround time significantly quicker than that of conventional pressing plants, and are subsequently archived on site. Each hand-numbered edition of 50 records will be housed in 450gs sleeves with magnetic flaps and info pocket, complemented by anti-static / anti-dust audiophile inner sleeves. Simply put, STOOR presents a chance for producers to store their ephemeral “magic moments” and happy accidents on a highly sophisticated and high fidelity physical format.

As perhaps the only hybrid “archive / lab / document” space of its kind, STOOR is poised to become a cauldron bubbling over with new sonic flavors and, more importantly, with remarkable new possibilities for how to work and communicate with one’s peers and audience.
