Press Info:
frank bretschneider’s new project SINN+FORM (MEANING AND FORM) is based on the idea of a fundamentally chaotic world as we know it from mathematical or physical theories and models (dynamical systems, probability theory, stochastic systems), and the constant attempt of man to recognize and to describe, predict, control and change this world.

musically, this system is simulated electronically using a modular synthesizer system. various modules produce a constant flow of randomly generated data that modulate the decisive musical parameters (pitch, note length, volume, tone). the attempt of SINN + FORM in this context is to transform this stream of events into a musically relevant system of chaos and order, dynamics and statics, content and form by means of an improvised but deliberate process of constant control and influence.

aesthetically, the project recalls the electronic music of the mid 20th century: studios such as the IRCAM in paris, stockholm?s EMS (elektronmusikstudion), the WDR »studio for electronic music« in cologne, or new york?s »columbia- princeton electronic music center«. SINN + FORM also captures the dynamics and energy of a spontaneous improvisation, last but not least as a reaction to a complex world, a world in permanent crisis.

the material was recorded in july 2014 at EMS, stockholm, using the buchla and serge analog synthesizer systems.

Press Info:
ich bin meine maschine is a spiritual track

ich bin meine maschine is a musical track

ich bin meine maschine is a scientific track

to underline this tryptic statement (and to demonstrate the diversity) of one of atomTM’s compositions that appeared on his 2013 “HD” album, raster- noton now releases a vinyl ep featuring remixes by boys noize, function and atomTM himself. “ich bin meine maschine”, in an elaborate manner, illustrates uwe schmidt ´s main musical concern – the exploration of electronics in pop music. inspired by a statement of the cybernetician heinz von foerster, atomTM constructed/generated a message that is playing around with a widely-cited kraftwerk quotation, turning “ich bin eine maschine” into “ich bin meine maschine” (i am my machine). besides the album version of “ich bin meine machine,” the ep features some dominantly techno influenced versions that perfectly connect the pop attitude of “HD” with dancefloor functionality. the boys noize remix shows off alexander ridha ´s deft skills for translating atomTM ´s futuristic pop into his own rough and driving electronic language. on the other hand, atomTM’s “linear remix” breaks down the original structure of the song and turns it into a reduced and much straighter, forward looking composition. function – one of techno’s true underground heroes – provides a remix that is breathing the air of solid and hypnotic club music, in which just the essential elements are streamlined and condensed into perfection.

all 3 remixers adapt the track to their particular universe. by doing so, they prepare the 12“ vinyl for its final destination – the club.

r-n146 is available as standard vinyl and as 180 gr heavy vinyl, limited edition, special cardboard box.

Press Info :
SUPER.TRIGGER is an absolute trove of percussive tensions and frequency driven finesse and deals mainly with the basic principles of any modern music: rhythm.

frank bretschneider takes his, never simple, but all the more heartfelt relationship to rhythm and its complexity, to an intense inventory and, this time, works less out of suspenseful abstract sounds, than out of grooves. there is a real sense of perpetual evolution and coiled tightness to the pulsating rhythmic programming, while the subtle sheets of noise that fill the void behind the beats compete against the rhythm and their own sonic purity for a higher state of energy — a constant flux of tension and release.

SUPER.TRIGGER comes again in bretschneider’s signature style of ultra-clean bleeps and bouncing machine beats with terseness and precision, and a preference for high-voltage sounds halfway between noise and tone.

the combination of programming, composition and construction is connected with his very idiosyncratic aesthetic of digital sound: controlled and objective. the whole follows simple mechanical states — on/off, up/down, soft/hard, slow/fast, loud/quiet — and is characterized by the absence of any romanticism. still this return to the elementary, the fundamental, does not diminish the music to dance-floor functionality, instead bretschneider always stays emphatically musical and manages to generate sophisticated and complex rhythm-structures, which respectively induce minimal deviations in frequency and timing relationships to generate a surplus of funk.

in all, SUPER.TRIGGER is bretschneider’s most straightforward, clear and compact work yet.

frank bretschneider works as a musician and composer in berlin. since 1996 he has published a number of albums for raster-noton, such as RHYTHM (r-n082) & EXP (r-n108). SUPER.TRIGGER is essentially a collection of various studio improvisations and was created between 2012 and 2013.

Press Info :
„HD“ can be described as Atom™‘s electronic quintessence: a blend of pop, electronic abstraction and powerful grooves – an invention Atom™ stands for and which was popularized through previous releases, classics in the electronica genre, such as „pop artificielle“ and others. Here is what the artist says:

As so often I was asked to say and write something about the recording you are currently having in front of you: „HD“. To any musician this is no doubt a complicated moment, since the choice of medium had already been taken in the first place: music. However, it seems that the written word needs to accompany the music, if not just to make sure the composer knows how to defend himself. Let me be frank, in the past this has been a rather ungrateful job, due to the fact that words either seem to appear like a method of justification or explanation of something that in my modest opinion doesn‘t need either one of the two. In the same sense in which „Liedgut“ wasn‘t about romaticism and „Winterreise“ had nothing to do with Schubert, „HD“ isn‘t about anything I‘d wish to express in a lengthy text or would like to see you being able to pinpoint or sell with a flashy headline. In order to get done with the headline, apart from the rather descriptive details I will dedicate my time to in an instant:

HD is a spiritual work

HD is a musical work

HD is a scientific work

The first recordings for „HD“ were made in 2005. Back then the album still carried another title which was „Hard Disc Rock“. The initial selection of songs for „Hard Disc Rock“ was of course a very different one, and while the years passed by most of those songs which did not continue to please, were one by one replaced by newer compositions (in fact the track „Stop (Imperialist Pop)“, which entered the album around 2009, does contain a fragment of an Atom™ track from 1998 called „Hard Disc Rock (don‘t stop)“.) All of the „early“ tracks for the later re-entitled „HD“ album necessarily were subject to profound changes in music and words, and I can say that by the time around 2012 „Hard Disc Rock“ had completely transformed into something else, which is pretty much what you got laying in front of you right now. „HD“ contains a couple of contributions by friends and colleagues such as Jamie Lidell (main vocals on „I love U“), Alva Noto (additional programmings on „Ich bin meine Maschine“), Marc Behrens (additional programmings on „Strom“ and „My Generation“), Jean-Charles Vandermynsbrugge (main vocals on „Pop HD“). Dominique Depret (guitars) and chilean pop star Jorge Gonzalez (backing vocals, guitar and bass raw material) – a diverse selection of guest musicians which very much reflects the general spirit of „HD“
