Press Info:
“LA DEMEURE; il y a péril en la demeure” is the opening to a five-part complex of works by artist grischa lichtenberger. “LA DEMEURE” – the residence – could be outlined as intimacy, a symbol of isolation and its possibilities. the joy of being isolated and having the change to work, explore and most importantly, experiment free from economic, temporal or social restraints is the center of attention of “LA DEMEURE; il y a péril en la demeure”.

the single tracks on “LA DEMEURE; il y a péril en la demeure” and their components are constantly broken, disassembled and reassembled again. some parts may remind of hip hop and breakbeat, others may evoke associations to a broken music box, something mechanical that is not working as it should. in his very own way, grischa lichtenberger is examining limits, new experiences and unfulfilling expectations. this unfilteredness and rawness, the lack of a target group the music is made for, is what is fascinating about this record. “LA DEMEURE; il y a péril en la demeure” thus becomes a luxurious-kafkaesque collection of materials, an uncensored archive of a seeker.

“LA DEMEURE; il y a péril en la demeure” will be released on CD and accompanied by three vinyl EPs that will put the experiment in relation to the public. the five-part cycle will be completed with a second album whose focus will be on “IL Y A PÉRIL EN LA DEMEURE” – danger in delay.

A Figment of His Imagination

Press Info:
The Mote Evolver debut of Amsterdam-based producer Jeff Rushin fits into the label catalog with an uncanny ease: much like his ME label-mates, Rushin is an artist who has the cool confidence and patience to let ideas slowly simmer, and knows that this simmering process is essential for his distinct sonic seasonings to truly and positively affect the body and mind. Rushin’s deft programming and arranging skill places him comfortably into a new school of producers: those who can project original atmospheres and emotional nuances without straying too far from a classic palette of techno sounds; and who release tracks of impressive depth without caring too much about “impressing.”

The opening track on A Figment of His Imagination, “Coda,” is an audio nightfall that illustrates all of the above. A flawlessly executed demonstration of anticipation building: a shivering sequence slowly creeps into the listener’s headspace, recedes, and returns again accompanied with sharp claps and huge subterranean kicks. “Facing the Truth” continues in this vein, but this time being more appropriate to watching the sun rise, as it combines the same commanding kick sound with busy cymbal shivers and the audio counterpart of frozen light rays. On the b-side, “Enigma” applies Rushin’s calm but forceful approach to what feels like a determined journey through a forest of translucent filaments: the glassy ringing motif makes it a contender for the most unique track on the record, although the closer “A Figment of his Imagination” has something to say on that subject as well. Intense hydraulic pumping and denial of mid-range frequencies gives it the hardest edge of any of the selections here, yet Rushin’s aforementioned talents prevent this titanium-plated industrial pounder from being a rote exercise in aggression.

A Figment of His Imagination is at once one of the most mature and most focused releases in Rushin’s young career; an exciting new snapshot of a work in progress.

Press Info:
“sleepstep” is the first collaboration between raster-noton and dasha rush. the record‘s subtitle “sonar poems for my sleepless friends” describes its underlying concept – “sleepstep” is a trip through electronically alienated micro-compositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere.

the stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. the titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute.

the musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. and though clichés are not dreaded, “sleepstep”, as a result, stays away from being cliché. the sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. a musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music.

dasha rush is already known as a techno dj and producer. here on “sleepstep”, she celebrates her alter ego. the cd version comes with a 32-pages booklet that also shows her photographic interest and includes the aforementioned poems written by her. the album‘s vinyl version will follow very soon.

Press Info:
Perhaps Syria’s most successful musical export, international singer Omar Souleyman has returned with his second proper studio effort and most personal album to date, “Bahdeni Nami”, coming this July from Monkeytown Records.

For the new album Omar opened his doors to collaborations with a number of renowned electronic producers, all of whom were established fans keen to offer unique interpretations of Souleyman’s established sound. Four Tet returns to produce a track, Gilles Peterson lends his considerable talents to one song, Modeselektor turn in the two fastest dance numbers of the set, and Legowelt offers a remix for the title track. Additionally Black Lips’ Cole Alexander treats one of the heart-wounding ballads to a thoroughly distinctive remix that will appear on a 7” in August.

The new album was recorded closer to home, in Istanbul, and appropriately the singer is joined by traditional accompaniment. Souleyman has reunited with his favorite poet, Ahmad Alsamer (who penned his pre-west hits “Kaset Hanzel”, “Khattaba”, and “Shift –al Mani”), heard throughout the album offering claps and wails of encouragement. The songs come alive with musical contributions and support from the virtuosic saz work of Khaled Youssef, another long time collaborator from his hometown. Keyboards by Rizan Said improvise devotedly to every tune and turn of Souleyman’s choice. The lyrics are familiar territory for the singer – declarations of eternal love, consolation of one’s aching heart, please to his lover to sleep in his arms forever – realized as four fast dance numbers, an introduction mawal, and an elaborate araby style ballad.

Despite world’s insistence to associate him with his home country’s unending war, Omar gives back nothing but Love.
