Stoor
The city of Rotterdam, a cultural interchange that is home to some of the world’s most cutting-edge architectural projects, has also been a home base for some of the seminal artists to have defined the terrain of electronic music. It has become a highly reliable forum for audio experimentation, with all the human and technological resources necessary for artists to reach that ‘next phase’ in their creative development.

In very much the same spirit, a new sonic lab complex, STOOR – located in a basement space formerly used as a government testing agency and as a fallout shelter – has opened within the heart of Rotterdam. This generously reinforced space, open 24/7 and with no stylistic limitations placed on its guests, will be available to intrepid electronic producers (novice and veteran alike). Whether visitors arrive with plans for mixing, post-production, or building new works from scratch, this environment will provide them an unparalleled opportunity to ‘stretch out’ creatively; to peel back any lingering inhibitions and to therefore discover aspects of their sonic approach that they have not fully explored before.

Specifically designed to encourage improvisation and expressive surprises, STOOR features a number of distinct elements that are unique not just to the Netherlands, but to the entirety of international electronic music culture. It offers an unparalleled selection of music-making tools, housing a number of highly rare vintage pieces as well as modern standbys – that is to say, everything from classic keyboard synths to the newest and most advanced modular systems. Coupled with the labs’ round-the-clock nature, the lack of a “pre-set” configuration for the tools on hand allows artists a greater role in the design of their own workspace, and will lead to a fluid sense of interaction between multiple producers working within the same confines.

STOOR will not just act as a venue for spontaneous and improvised expression, but will also be a space in which a special type of documentary process takes place. Thanks to an on-site vinyl lathe, limited edition recordings of each resident producer’s work at STOOR can be created with a turnaround time significantly quicker than that of conventional pressing plants, and are subsequently archived on site. Each hand-numbered edition of 50 records will be housed in 450gs sleeves with magnetic flaps and info pocket, complemented by anti-static / anti-dust audiophile inner sleeves. Simply put, STOOR presents a chance for producers to store their ephemeral “magic moments” and happy accidents on a highly sophisticated and high fidelity physical format.

As perhaps the only hybrid “archive / lab / document” space of its kind, STOOR is poised to become a cauldron bubbling over with new sonic flavors and, more importantly, with remarkable new possibilities for how to work and communicate with one’s peers and audience.

Press Info:
Monnom Black will mark its 17th release with its first various artist compilation presented on triple vinyl. Keeping with the label’s modus operandi, the compilation is packed with iconic, raw and uncompromising techno, featuring 13 artists new and old to the imprint, including a re-release of a classic Drax aka Thomas P. Heckmann track from 1993.

To coincide with the launch of the compilation, Monnom Black will hold its first highly-anticipated label party. Locking arms with the notorious underground Dutch promoters Reaktor, known for their challenging events and pushing the boundaries of what techno has to offer. Together they will celebrate with an electronic onslaught on New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam’s Elementstraat Warehouse. A location cut to the bone that perfectly encapsulates the label and promoters combined vision and ethos.

Press Info:
Isolated Lines is a Swiss musician exploring dense and rhythmically experimental techno.

Though Isolated Lines is still a relatively new project, the man behind the moniker has been involved in band projects, sound engineering jobs and Switzerland’s underground music scene in general for some years. Coming from a background of listening to and playing in rock, indie and noise groups, his tracks are as much informed by the energy and dynamics of live performance and sound science as they are by the endless possibilities of electronic production. So far, they have found a home on established Swiss label Creaked and been picked up by Tommy Four Seven for release on his 47 imprint.

Isolated Lines productions are warmly textural and full of subtleties, usually favouring trippy, hypnotic grooves over outright aggression. Whilst most of the detail is consciously designed, Isolated Lines makes music in a way which leaves space for randomness and organic elements; listen to the off kilter swing of ‘Raze’ or his remix for Gaspard De La Montagne, for example. Especially through a decent sound system, the layers evolve and interact with an exciting air of unpredictability.

As with his studio gear, the live setup is subject to constant change and development. Certain characteristics remain within the sound and the way it is presented though: ambitious arrangements, soaring, euphoric pads and hard hitting drums. His material is versatile enough for pitchblack basements and early morning festival sets alike.
