Picking things up where ‘EP1’ left off, Nicolas Bougaïeff unveils the next instalment in his EP series on Mute’s NovaMute branch. ‘EP2’. ‘Primal Funk’, the first track in this collection dropping throughout the first half of 2024, is a loopy, rolling track building on the feeling of last year’s ‘Primal Express’, only grittier.

As the trickling synths of ‘Primal Funk’ on Nicolas Bougaïeff’s ‘EP2’ subside, ‘Secret Room’ continues with weighty low-end and mysterious atmospheres, accompanied by sparse dream-like melodies before breaking out into tripped-out sequences. Last in line, ‘Shadow Plot’ is the darkest of the bunch, featuring low-slung grooves and foreboding sonics that build in intensity, joined at the hip with alien-like bursts of filtered acid.

A decades-long love of club music has compelled Nicolas Bougaïeff to challenge conventional wisdom, delivering genre-busting Berghain sets that expertly blend French-Canadian hip-hop with Tchaikovsky, moody techno and ambient. Launching his debut record as a producer in 2013, the Movements EP with Max Cooper, Bougaïeff has since put out a string of singles on labels including minimal techno imprint Trapez, working with NovaMute on various projects including ‘The Upward Spiral’ and accompanying remix album, ‘Higher Up the Spiral’, and parent-label Mute for his 2022 album ‘Begin Within’.

Outside his music adventures, Bougaïeff designed the controllers for Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman live tour, and in 2010 with Hawtin co-founded Liine, the software company behind the landmark used by astronaut Alexander Gerst on the International Space Station in a live jam with Kraftwerk. From his teaching – he founded the Berlin Academy of Electronic Music – to writing his PhD thesis on minimal techno, Bougaïeff is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of techno. Now, the Berlin-based Canadian Bougaïeff continues his series with another sublime selection of techno cuts.

Following an impressive start to life in 2023, Marcel Fengler’s masterfully curated HARDPROOF series stomps forward into the new year with another hard-hitting edition. Coming in hot with an expected amount of minimal techno potency, the fourth instalment of IMF’s ‘Hardproof’ VA series welcomes Sons Of Hidden, Rey Brennan, JANEIN, Mathys Lenne and Jay York with five creatively crafted original tracks.

The VA gets underway with Sons Of Hidden and ‘Forgotten Garden’, diving straight into a pulsating flurry of fat, rounded kicks and hissing hat grooves alongside its relentlessly pumping low-end drive whilst glitchy vox shots, sensual vocal accents and sinister samples give it an eerily tribal/primal feel before Ray Brennan’s ‘Defender’ brings more savage low-frequency power from the outset. Riding a reeling vocal sample from the off, its progressive peaks and troughs, filled with corrosive melodic components, keep things on full intensity for the duration.

JANEIN comes next with ‘Perseids’ taking things on a hypnotic trip in this tribal-tinged kaleidoscope of dystopian synths and mind-bending modulation before Mathys Lenne’s ‘Lise’ delivers more stripped- back ominous vibes alongside harshened industrial grooves and a rolling bassline. The release ends with Jay York and ‘Halsey’, which features a distinct alien feel from the outset and offers another solid exhibition of narcotic musicality set to the score of stadium-sized beats and a mix packed with fattened frequencies from start to finish.

Force Mass Motion is back with more of his essential old-school inspired sounds on a fresh two-tracker via his own self-titled label.

Mike Wells has been a core part of the contemporary underground scene almost since day one. He was there and helping to shape the sound of rave, UK hardcore and jungle, then sat at the forefront of the nu-school breaks revolution. He has appeared on plenty of notable labels from Rabbit City to Lot49 to Kingsize Records, but now takes care of business himself on Force Mass Motion Recordings.

The opener ‘In Your Eyes’ has elastic drum funk designed purely for the club with filtered vocals adding the human touch. Well-designed acid lines, big hits and smeared chords keep things dynamic as the writhing groove powers on. The fantastic ‘Oh Ecstasy’ will have dancers in raptures with its explosive vocal cries and rave-ready synths. The artist’s signature blistering breakbeats power the track along through breakdowns and big drops, all of which build the tension to electric levels.
