One of the great ambassadors of Berlin techno, Ellen Allien presents her brand new album ‘Alientronic’. This is a body of work rooted in the city where it was recorded, Ellen’s home and the place where she discovered techno sparking a love a air that will burn for infinity.

‘Alientronic’ was recorded during the cold winter months in Berlin at the end of 2018, a time when creativity hits a peak in the city. Sub-zero temperatures and dark nights keep the artists locked away indoors, finding time and space to journey inwards and tap into the deepest recesses of their creative energy.

The album represents an artist who is brimming with ideas, years of experience breathe life into Ellen’s work – it’s re ned, yet liberated, informed by the past but very much looking to the future. Ellen disseminates classic techno and acid tropes through her visionary lens, vocals are looped and warped, tough beats slam down as stirring pads coax us into an emotive realm and we’re privy to a spellbinding other world full of mysterious exotic allure.

Is it a hallucination or are the electroterrestrials already here among us?

Cassegrain are in the house. With this four tracker, they make techno with a signature that sets them apart from the rest and we are really glad to have them onboard.

Addax opens fire with a textured fast groove, with delayed filtered hits over a relentless continuous rhythm. Intensity grows until the drums disappear shortly to come back in full force in the closing minutes. A dance-floor destroyer for peak time moments.

Markhor starts with processed beats that are soon followed by analogue percussive hits creating an hypnotic mood. More layers of synths are added to the main groove electrifying the feeling and making an alien exercise of modern techno.

Nubian Ibex keeps the pace fast and focused on the floor. A similar recipe here, continuous grooves, synthesized bleeps and an intelligent arrangement. Noises and abstract textures share lines with sharp hi-hats and percussion all with a characteristic sound, not from a standard sound palette.

Arabian Oryx closes the EP, slowing down things slightly, approaching liquid dub soundscapes but with the tension that Cassegrain always manage to bring to their productions.

I visited beautiful Asunción in Paraguay for just 24 hrs in the summer of 2017. I was invited to play at Sequence club (sadly since shut down) alongside BNJMN and local activist P. Lopez. There I met a handful of dedicated and super-talented producers, spearheading a small but creatively rich techno uprising. P. Lopez and his studio compadre Octavio (LPZ records) are two of the leading forces in the Asunción / South America scene and I’m proud to present this four track EP on Counterchange. Smouldering, heavyweight burners recorded and mixed by two long-serving artists with great skill and passion.

Sylvie Maziarz has been steadily but surely paving her way. With her Berlina Für Techno crew she throws a series of great no-nonsense parties and also as a DJ she has been able to take huge steps recently. She’s currently playing in her home country Germany as well as all over Europe, with belgium as a very regular stopover.

She sent us three tracks which are inspired by eco-activism and the dire situation of the planet’s climate. ‘Black or White’ immediately paints the typical Maziarz sound with high-pitched leads over pounding Techno.
You might recognize a few samples in ‘Save The Earth’… A seriously straight forward pounding Techno track but with a message underneath and yet very dancefloor worthy indeed. Third track ‘I Want You To Act’ is a bit more raw and could do pretty well in the hands of a famous female cat loving DJ we shall not mention. Tested on defenceless dancers and this one causes mayhem.

We hope you’ll enjoy the tracks but also take the message to the heart.

Mark Broom invites Absent (Antwerp based Yann Van Uffelen) to make his Beard Man debut via the ‘Animate EP’.

With African blood running through his veins, Absent already had an early passion for rhythm and melody. His real musical journey started when his dad introduced him to vinyl, having an extensive record collection ranging the spectrum of different music styles. At the age of 15 he attended his first Techno event and from there on he developed a deeper taste for the genre while he was digging in the crates. It became a true passion as he began to discover and understand Electronic music. As a producer, Absent soon learned the tricks of the trade buying some gear and messing around with it. The underground club sound was where he found a symbol of freedom. After that he got in touch with Diego Hostettler (former Kanzleramt artist) who took his production to a new level. It captured DJs and the public alike and resulted in a few collaborations and the playfully titled ‘She’s Not Worth It EP’, released on Alexander Kowalski’s Damage Music Berlin label. As a solo artist Absent has also recorded on the likes of Gem, Modular Expansion, Stahlplatten and Belief System.

Not following trends, Absent’s sound runs the gamut from exuberantly bright to emotionally deep and dark intense rhythmic Techno, with that little extra edge that he feels is sometimes missing in modern day Technoland.
