“Angleterror” is now available as digital download. The majority of the work on this album was created between 2002-7 during his sojourn in Paris and informs the title of the project. “6 of 7 of the compositions on “Angleterror” feature donated guitar fragments from 3 guitar players*.
The exception is “Route 1+2” which has existed in various guises since 2002, originally generated by a computer programme “Thonk” sadly not available for OS X. Thonk would sometimes take hours to complete its algorithmic function with the result impossible to predict, part of its charm. the actual source material for Route 1+2 is lost but I am fairly certain that a guitar sound was at its germination.
The other 6 compositions were realised in one of 2 ways. “Starvation” and “Aspirateur” were constructed from first principles with guitar gestures as their source. The remaining 4 compositions were existing drones and soundscapes given to David Husser to play and improvise over. After making his contribution I re-edited and processed the performance into the state the now exists.”

Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er Jahre war die Hochzeit der Underground Discotheken. Es war die Ära als aus Punk, Post-Punk, New Wave und Electronic ein einzigartiger Soundtrack entstand, zu dem so mancher durchtanzte Nächte in legendären Clubs wie dem Blue Shell in Köln oder der Batschkapp in Frankfurt erlebte.
Mit der Doppel-CD und dem Download Bundle GENERATION UNDERGROUND lebt diese Ära mit den prägendsten Bands und Interpreten der Szene wieder auf – mit One Hit Wondern und All Time Classics.
Mit dabei sind auf CD1 stillbildende Acts wie New Order, Public Image Ltd., Iggy Pop, New Model Army, Morrissey und XTC. Dazu kommen Klassiker von Bands wie Gang Of Four, Wire oder Killing Joke. Alles Bands, auf die sich viele Newcomer der letzten Jahre immer wieder als Referenz bezogen haben, wie z.B. Bloc Party, Editors, Franz Ferdinand oder Interpol.
Neben Evergreens enthält die CD aber auch eher rar gekoppelte Songs und Raritäten wie die 6minütige Album-Version von Underworlds „Underneath The Radar“ aus der Zeit als die Band weit vor „Born Slippy“ noch tanzbaren Indie-Rock spielte. Ebenso rar dürfte die 7minütige Cover-Version „Faith Healer“ von den Bollock Brothers sein, die genauso wie der Song von Underworld ein absoluter Club-Hit in den Szene-Discotheken war.
CD2 enthält Songs die prägend waren für die heutige Goth/Dark-Wave und Electro-Szene mit The Sisters of Mercy, Anne Clark, Nitzer Ebb, Cabaret Voltaire oder DAF. Dazu Indie-Legenden wie Tuxedomoon, Devo, Laibach, die Dead Kennedys oder die Ramones.
Compiled wurde die CD in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kölner Blue Shell-Inhaber und DJ Rolf Kistenich sowie Radio-Moderator Thomas Elbern (WDR, EinsLive, Deutschlandfunk). Elbern war Mitglied von Pink Turnes Blue und ist als Frontman von Escape With Romeo sehr aktiv und steuert mit dieser Band auch 2 Titel bei (auf der CD Variante „Somebody“ und auf dem Download eine exklusive Cover Version von Fad Gadgets „Back To Nature“).
Das Download Bundle enthält zudem einen exklusiven Audiokommentar von Thomas Elbern mit Hintergründen und wissenswertem zu den Songs von GENRATION UNDERGROUND.

Wer in den letzten Jahren den Finger an den Puls elektronischer Musik gelegt hat, dem wird APPARAT in der ein oder anderen Ausformung begegnet sein – soviel kann man mit einiger Sicherheit sagen. Sascha Ring, der Berliner Musiker, der unter jenem Alias firmiert, war eine der treibenden Kräfte elektronischer Musik der letzten Dekade. In dieser Zeit hat er drei umjubelte APPARAT-Alben herausgebracht – und gefeierte Gigs in unzähligen Clubs und Festivals rund um den Planeten gespielt. Sein viertes Album erscheint nun im Herbst 2011, der vorab gelaunchte Track “Ash/Black Veil” hat in wenigen Wochen bereits über 100.000 plays auf Soundcloud erzielt.
The Devil’s Walk, eine Verbeugung vor Percy Bysshe Shelleys gleichnamigem satirischen Gedicht aus dem Jahr 1812, ist das Album, mit dem Sascha gewissermaßen erwachsen wird und sein Spiel neu aufstellt. Hatte er zuvor auf dem legendären Elektro-Label Shitkatapult veröffentlicht, dessen Mitbetreiber er für einige Jahre war, ist The Devil’s Walk sein erstes Album für Mute. Und wenn bereits sein letztes Album Walls (2007) eine Bewegung weg vom Dancefloor andeutete, so vollendet das neue Werk mit seiner kontemplativen Dream-Pop-Sigur-Ros-Signatur diese Wende und amalgamiert epische, emotionale Texturen zu dichtem Sci-Fi Soul. Als missing link zwischen Steve Reich und RADIOHEAD evoziert The Devil’s Walk jene schwer fassbare euphorische Melancholie die einen dazu antreibt, die Arme vor Freude in die Luft zu werfen, während einem gleichzeitig die Tränen die Wangen hinunter rinnen.
Einige kennen Sascha sicher auch als Mitglied der Gonzo-Elektro-Supergroup MODERAT, einer Kollaboration mit seinen eigenwilligen Berliner Homies von MODESELEKTOR, die im Jahr 2009 ihr Debüt veröffentlichten, worauf hin die Truppe sich auf Einladung Thom Yorkes unversehens im Vorprogramm von RADIOHEAD wiederfand. Diesen März spielten MODERAT den vorerst letzten Gig einer ausgelassenen wie ausladenden Welttournee beim Bloc Weekend Festival in Minehead.
Andere wiederum mögen sich an die taumelnden, selig machenden Synths erinnern, die Sascha 2006 gemeinsam mit Ellen Allien unter dem Namen ORCHESTRA OF BUBBLES herausbrachte.
The Devil’s Walk markiert in gewissermaßen auch Saschas Abkehr vom Computer als Meta-Instrument: “Ich war immer auf der Suche nach interessanten elektronischen Sounds”; sagt er, “doch ab einem gewissen Punkt, als sich alles digitalisierte und jeder Sound als plug-in verfügbar wurde, hatte ich das Gefühl, dass die Entwicklung an ein Ende geraten war, dass es nicht mehr viele neue Sounds zu entdecken gab. So wandte ich mich diesem old-schooligen Ding namens ‚Song’ zu. Natürlich sind eine Menge Computer auf dem Album, doch der Ansatz war anders: Zuhause haben ich Klavier und eine Gitarre, Instrumente, die ich nicht besonders gut beherrsche und manchmal tauchten Songideen auf, die ich in einer miesen Heim-Version aufnahm und im Studio am Computer weiterbearbeitete. Bislang war das – wenn ich echte Instrumente benutzte –, genau andersrum.”
Seinen Ausgangspunkt nahm The Devil’s Walk während eines Mexiko-Aufenthalts Anfang 2010. Eine länger Pause auf der MODERAT Tour verbrachte Sascha als Arbeitsurlaub in Sayulita, einer Stadt an der mexikanischen Westküste, gemeinsam mit seinen Freunden und Mitstreitern Joshua Eustis (von TELEFON TEL AVIV) und Fredo Nogueira. “In der Regel brauche ich ein reguläres Studio, doch in Mexiko lernte ich, mit einem Notebook zu arbeiten. Wir bauten ein kleines Studio-Setting für Schlagzeug und Gitarre, und, vielleicht weil ich ohnehin an SONGS arbeitete, funktionierte es. Es war eine tolle Erfahrung.”
Die jedoch – zurück in Berlin – bruchlos in eine monatelang anhaltende Schreibblockade überging. Erlösung brachte schließlich das Angebot, für K7!s DJ-Kicks Serie einen Mix aufzunehmen, gefolgt von einer DJ-Tour quer durch Europa mit seinem DJ-Partner SKATE – und dem Schwur, das APPARAT Album fertig zu stellen, wenn er zurück in Berlin wäre:
“Ich hatte 60 Songideen auf meiner Festplatte, unter denen vielleicht 6 waren, die ich für das Album nutzen wollte, ich musste also noch eine Menge neue Musik schreiben.”
Geprägt von THE CURE, ROXY MUSIC und COCTEAU TWINS wie von JAMES BLAKE und FOUR TET, nahm Sascha das Album in seinem Studio mit Hilfe von Patrik “Nackt” Christensen (vormals Teil der Berliner Electro-Goth Formation WARREN SUICIDE) als Koproduzenten auf, den er kurz zuvor kennengelernt hatte: “Er beherrscht jedes Instrument und hat ein Gespür dafür, nicht jedes Mal das Offensichtliche zu tun.”
Nachdem die neuen Stücke mit Ukulelen, Gitarren, Schlagzeug, Keyboards und allem anderen Verfügbaren ausgestattet worden waren, erschien es nur logisch, dass sie (und manche ältere ebenfalls) auch in einem Band Set Up gespielt würden. APPARAT in 2011 ist eine vierköpfige Band, die APPARAT BAND: “Es ist schwierig, eine Computer Platte für die Bühne aufzubereiten – deshalb bin ich glücklich, dass Nackt und die anderen mit mir in der Band sind. Alles ist neu – und es fühlt sich nach einem gewaltigen Schritt nach vorne an.”
Der Album Titel ist nicht nur eine Referenz an Shelleys nach wie vor aktuelle Sozialkritik, die auch nach 200 Jahren Saschas politisches Bewusstsein spiegelt, The Devil’s Walk spielt ebenso auf seinen Sommer in Mexiko an, wo er die landestypische Haltung zum Tod kennenlernte. “Der Tod hat eine andere Bedeutung in Mexiko. Die Menschen feiern Beerdigungen, sie sind nicht unbedingt nur Grund zur Trauer; ich fand das interessant und wollte das mitthematisieren.”
Obwohl Sascha nicht gerne über die neuen Songs redet, ist es ihm wichtig zu betonen, dass gerade die epischen Balladen wie “Song Of Los”, “Black Water” oder “Escape”, die er selber singt, nicht das Werk eines tiefbetrübten Songwriters sind: “Es gibt sicher ein durchgängiges Thema hinter den Songs – ich möchte bloß nicht sagen, was jeder über seine Platten sagt: Es ist ein sehr persönliches Album. Jeder Song beschreibt eine konkrete Situation, die ich mit einer bestimmten Person erlebt habe. Daher stammen meine Ideen. Manchmal hast du ein verrücktes Wochenende, und du wachst Montag oder Dienstag wieder auf, und du erinnerst dich an einen speziellen Moment. Manchmal ist das bloß das gemeinsame Sitzen in einem Auto mit jemandem – doch aus irgendeinem Grund erinnert man sich daran.”
So oder so – alles, was man über Sascha Ring und APPARAT wissen will, liegt in dieser fabelhaften Platte. Der Teufel steckt nicht nur im Detail, er ist in jeden Groove eingeschlossen. Und mit Sascha an den Reglern hat er natürlich all die guten Melodien auf seiner Seite.

With these soft spoken words on the simply-titled opening track–“Intro”– M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez introduces us to his sixth record and first double disc album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.
Dauntlessly singing into the void that was left behind since Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez suddenly surges with overwhelming emotion as the music mounts an invisible precipice. Historically, he softly eased you into his world, introducing you to the lush and radiant spaces between captivating melodies and intimate lyrics, but not this time. Not on this record.
Graduating from the fuzzy, fumbling emotional cobwebs and draped ambiance of past records, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming careens past its audience. Brazenly stretching out along the horizon, spilling glittery, golden arms of sound across the landscape, it holds your breath hostage without you even noticing you were missing it. If it seemed that Anthony was basking in the sunshine-drenched days of his youth when he released Saturdays in 2008, then it can be said that in 2011, at the age of 30, he is tempestuously charging towards his future with Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.
Relocating to Los Angeles from Antibes, Gonzalez surrounded himself with players pivotal to completing his childhood dream of a double disc record. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) and guitarist Brad Laner (from 90’s band Medicine) had been hugely influential on Anthony growing up and now were central to the new record’s creation.
“In France there is this show on TV where at the end there is a musical guest who plays one or two songs. I remember one night when I was a teenager being at home watching the best of performances and looking at this crazy bass player with a big afro and thinking, ‘Wow this guy is so cool.’ “And now I am working with him. It’s so intense that thinking about it makes me feel weird. But it’s weird in a super good way. Same thing with Brad, I was listening to his music when I was first getting into music and now he’s on my album.”
Anthony and Justin met backstage in 2009 at Scotland’s T In The Park. Later, “he came to me very genuinely stating that ‘he was a fan and that he would love to work with me,’” explains Gonzalez. “I love when people do that because I can tell it’s coming from the heart. He was sincere and that’s the way I like to work with people.”
Stepping away from his work with producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson on Saturday, Gonzalez freckles his new chapter with signature M83 fingerprints while pushing himself beyond the constricting emotions of a guarded musician. Bored with being frustrated and shy, Anthony is respectful of the precious time given to him and doesn’t want to leave behind any regrets, thus thrusting himself into the spotlight vocally. He tests out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream, and each voice clings to us like a dew-heavy spider web at dawn.
Fans will recognize band member Morgan Kibby, her vocals flirting with the shadowy places in between verses, leaping off the record in spoken word or blending with an adult choir. Morgan will join Anthony on tour but she was never meant to sing as much on this record as she had on pervious projects. Quenching his desire to work with a different person on each record, Gonzalez added LA-based chanteuse Zola Jesus to the mix for the completion of “Intro.” “The song was already written but I really wanted a female vocal on it and I was kind of struggling to find the right person, but then I heard her music and it just made sense.”
Where Saturday=Youth is drenched in lustful exploration and hungry adolescent wonder, Hurry Up is decadently cunning and seductive. “Intro” and “My tears are becoming a sea” eerily croon to you, swirling all of the glitter and growth from the past records into an epic swell, mysteriously and dramatically warning you of the impact you are about to experience. “Midnight City” (disc one) and “OK Pal” (disc two) are humid, adrenaline driven dreams unlike anything we have heard from M83 in the past. “Midnight City” adeptly sweeps you through abandoned concrete streets swimming in broken neon light and aggressively pushing and pulsating to synthetic beats. While “OK Pal” catcalls you to a locker full of mapped out Peter Gabriel-esque echoing lyrics, leaving you stranded in a post-apocalyptic landscape. These journeys are about awakening, craving and conquering. Throughout Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming Anthony carries the listener to different countries of sound in his own universe, “We didn’t need a story, we didn’t need a real world. We just had to keep walking and we became the stories- we became the places.” Drifting away from his previous records and reigned in politeness he unleashes all that he has been dreaming of and yearning for. Even when he takes a second to look back on “Echoes of Mine” the velvety, elderly voice of a woman heartbreakingly tells the story of a girl drenched in the shadows of her youth, knowing she has to grow up.
Grandiose in scale and inspired by Smashing Pumpkin’s revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness, Anthony has long had the goal to create his own monumental double disc record. “I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into it [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs.”
Impressed with the juxtaposing sun and moon artwork featured on Melancholy, Anthony focuses in on another natural duality: siblings. The cover artwork mirrors this relationship, featuring a photograph of a little boy with a little girl sitting on a bed. The photograph perpetuates the conversation for the two distinct voices we behind each disc, representing two sides of an overall piece that are almost the same. “I want people to listen to it as two different human beings that are connected somehow, but every song on the album has a secret on the other side.”
Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best. Gracefully coming into the next decade of his life, Anthony delivers what makes each record sincere, innocent, and full of joy: he gives us his past and his future.
“I think it is a reflection of my 30 years of being a human being. It’s a compilation of all my previous music together. It’s a retrospective of myself.”
