`’It’s all about hope, forgiveness, being given a new chance and the world being your oyster”, says Andy Bell, one half of one of pop’s most enduring songwriting partnerships, talking about Erasure’s new album. The moment that The Violet Flame opens, the listener is drawn into that empowering sense of optimism. Once again – as they approach 30 years of songwriting next year, having sold 25 million albums and achieved more than 40 hit singles – with their 16th studio album, the globally-adored duo of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have created another stunning success of emotionally-charged electro-pop with euphoric, synth-fuelled melodies that strike instantly into the heart.
Not even a year has passed since Erasure released Snow Globe, their first-ever seasonal album, but with its across-the-board critical acclaim, unsurprisingly the duo were eager to create the next one. Andy explains: “When Vince and I get together we’re always quite nervous. So Snow Globe was kind of a test to see how the songwriting still stood and, because we were really pleased with what came out, it inspired us for The Violet Flame.” Vince adds: “It doesn’t take very long for Andy and I to feel comfortable with each other once again.” That telepathic songwriting partnership shines once more.
The Violet Flame is the sound of a band refreshed and reinvigorated. It’s a clear departure in mood from the wistful Snow Globe, which was the first release since the death of Andy’s partner of 25 years, Paul. From the beginning to the end of its 10 tracks, it marks a new phase in Andy’s life, of love and newfound beginnings, with his civil partner Steve, and time spent between Steve’s Miami home, and his own London base.
“Snow Globe was quite cathartic”, reflects Andy. “I’d met Steve in the interim and he really helped me through the whole thing. I don’t know what I would have done without him, so The Violet Flame is a thank you, and is all about a new life cycle beginning. I feel so lucky and so blessed – it sounds really corny, but to have been loved even one time in your life is amazing, and to have a second chance is incredible.”
It’s Andy’s newfound happiness and stability. He cites musical transformations. The theme of transformation and new beginnings is captured in the album’s title, The Violet Flame, a literal spiritual term meaning the transformation of negative energy into positive energy, freedom and forgiveness. It’s a concept that courses through Erasure’s new album.
They enlisted the production expertise of Richard X after their successful collaboration on Snow Globe, and the tracks were recorded between his London studio The Toyshop and by Vince in his Brooklyn studio. Richard X also contributed to the vocals. “He’s very open to what we’re about”, says Vince. “He’s quite a traditional producer, he’s very big on making an album rather than 10 individual tracks. So the whole way through he’s thinking about the running order, imagining that people would buy the record and play from one end to the next.”
The Violet Flame Tour then begins in Miami on 12 September and the band return to Europe on 8 November for a tour. The year ends with two shows at New York’s Terminal 5 on 30 and 31 December. Full details from: http://www.erasureinfo.com/concerts/

Nach nunmehr 30 Jahren des Songwritings, 25 Millionen verkauften Alben und 40 Hitsingles bringt das Duo, bestehend aus Vince Clark und Andy Bell, ihr 16. Nicht einmal ein Jahr ist vergangen, seit Erasure ihr seasonal album „Snow Globe“ veröffentlicht haben, doch waren die beiden mehr als erpicht darauf, ein weiteres Album zu produzieren. Andy erklärt: “Als Vince und ich uns wieder zusammentaten, waren wir recht nervös. Snow Globe war eine Art Test, ob das mit dem Songwriting nach wie vor funktionieren würde. Da wir mit dem Ergebnis mehr als zufrieden waren, wurden wir auch gleich für The Violet Flame inspiriert.”
The Violet Flame ist der Sound einer erfrischten und gestärkten Band. Nach der sehnsüchtigen Stimmung von Snow Globe, die erste Veröffentlichung nach dem Tod von Andys Partner Paul Hickey, folgen nun 10 Tracks der neuen Phase. Eine Phase des Liebens und der neuen Anfänge, denn mit Steve ist nun auch ein neuer Partner an Andys Seite zu finden. “Snow Globe war recht erlösend”, sagt Andy. “Ich hatte Steve in der Zwischenzeit kennengelernt und er half mir wirklich sehr, das Ganze zu bewältigen. Ich weiß nicht was ich ohne ihn gemacht hätte. Daher ist The Violet Flame auch ein Dankeschön. Ich bin ungemein glücklich und fühle mich gesegnet mit dieser zweiten Chance!”
The Violet Flame, in New York und London aufgenommen und von Richard X produziert, atmet einen mitreißenden Glauben an die Zukunft. Anders als sonst basieren die Songs diesmal auf von Vince Clarke unter der Sonne Miamis vorbereiteten Grooves: “Ich fand sie sehr hilfreich und inspirierend, die Songs sprudelten nur so aus mir raus“, sinniert Andy.
Es ist seine neugewonnene Zufriedenheit und Stabilität, die den Albumthemen Glück und Hoffnung ihre Grundlage geben. Die Direktheit des Albums zeigt sich besonders in Dance-Tracks wie der Hymne “Sacred”, deren Melodie von übersteuerten Synths und Andys leidenschaftlichen Vocals getragen wird. Oder der hedonistische Rausch bei “Elevation”. So verwundert es kaum, weshalb Andy Donna Summer und die Pet Shop Boys als Einfluss nennt. Doch natürlich bleibt bei Erasures Dance-Musik das Gefühl großgeschrieben. Melodien steht dabei immer im Mittelpunkt. “Andy möchte daraus jedes Mal ein Dance-Album machen, aber ich wollte es nicht auf 127 bpm begrenzen,” erklärt Vince. “Das Zeug, was mich wirklich fasziniert, ist Musik mit einem emotionalen Twist. Lass es die Lyrics sein oder die Melodie – du hast einen Popsong und plötzlich scheppert es irgendwo, und genau dieser Twist macht einen guten Popsong für mich aus.”
