[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Wallis plays Perc Trax

DJ:
Wallis

About the concept:
Here is the forty-second instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

The idea behind it is to ask some DJs/mixing artists if they have an artist or label in mind that they love and would like to use for a mix.

So the approach of each mix is clear: the choosen DJ/mixing artist makes a selection of tracks produced by one artist (and her/his monikers) or released on a label (and its sublabels) and creates a nice mix from it.

Find links to all instalments at our overview. Today we present you Wallis’s mix of tracks released on Perc Trax.

About Wallis:
Wallis is a techno producer and DJ based in Berlin. She is deeply interested in powerful atmospheric noises in relation to mesmerizing melodies and distorted sounds.

Her music is a combination of unapologetic merciless rhythms, modular heat and field recordings, warmly merged together through rough dynamic transitions.

“I like my techno to be brutal, 90% of the time”

Her first vinyl release will come out in your local record store in June.

About Perc Trax:
Perc Trax was launched in 2004 as a vehicle for Perc’s own productions and over the years has evolved into one of the must check imprints for those with an interest in rough-edged electronic music. Under Perc’s careful guidance Perc Trax has developed a core roster of artists including Truss, Sawf, Forward Strategy Group and of course Perc himself with heavyweights such as Ancient Methods, Richard H. Kirk, Marcel Fengler, Factory Floor and Chris Carter appearing regularly on remix duties. Initially the label prided itself on being judged solely on its musical output but regular collaborations with designer Jonny Costello, starting with Perc’s ‘Wicker & Steel’ album, has seen the label become regarded as one the most visually innovative in its field.

The label has won Resident Advisor’s renowned label of the month title and has been the subject of a feature in the Guardian newspaper in June of 2012, a rarity for a label with such an uncompromising sound. The label’s releases are respected for both their experimental edge and their dancefloor power, leading to Perc Trax showcases regularly being promoted around the world from Tokyo to New York and across Europe.

The move to album releases that started in 2009 has seen Perc Trax reach more people than ever before and the launch of two sub-labels in 2013 (Submit and Perc Trax Ltd.) has allowed a wider range of artists including London acid hero Matt Whitehead and industrial legends Einstürzende Neubauten to join the Perc Trax family.

In 2014 Perc Trax celebrates its tenth year of releasing music, a period that has seen 70 vinyl releases and 6 albums across its three labels. To celebrate this milestone Perc Trax will be releasing three EPs of new tracks as well as a double CD compilation including Perc’s first commercially available mix cd. The label will also be embarking on another international tour, climaxing with Perc Trax’s biggest London event to date at the start of 2015. Wallis About Her Choice:
Perc Trax is for me one of the strongest techno labels out there. The music is always super harsh and hefty, yet the label displays a real diversity, and each record is unique in its own way. The balance between extremely distorted sounds and the sharpness techno needs is in my opinion perfectly achieved, and the sound design is always on point. When building a DJ set, I usually have to restrain myself from playing too many tracks from them, so this seemed like the perfect occasion to really let go.

[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Karschau plays Blue Hour

DJ:
Karschau

About the concept:
Here is the forty-first instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

Today we present you Karschau’s mix of tracks, collaborations & remixes by Blue Hour.

About Karschau:
Born and raised in a suburb of Hamburg, Karschau moved to Berlin in 2012. Inspired by the musical experiences from nights out in Berlin’s clubs he started djing and producing in 2013. In 2015 he started the club night and open air series Background. Codes, which was recently relaunched and is now taking place on Thursday nights at Griessmuehle. For this series he and his crew invited artists like Escape To Mars, Aiken, Yan Cook and Reflec. In the summer of 2016 he also got involved in the Colours afterhour series at Griessmuehle, hosting regular Saturday daytime events on two floors with a strict focus on supporting local newcomer dj’s and crews.

Karschau’s dj sets are usually designed for the early morning hours, containing high energy dark, driving and hypnotizing techno, but he also likes to get out his late 90’s techno records to go above and beyond the 135bpm for a full on tribal techno set.

About Blue Hour:
Under the guise Blue Hour, British producer/DJ Luke Standing has carved his unique imprint and distinctive sound not only onto the UK Techno scene but the global Dance community as a whole. A series of notably designed 12″s delve forward and strike classically with a fresh, exciting fusion of functionality and traditionalism of dancefloor focused Techno, intimately driven by the spirit and energy of the 90s, Millsian futurism and timeless Electronica.

This depth of appreciation, love and understanding is also evident in his approach as a DJ, where Blue Hour’s profound inclination to the discovery of esoteric records and devotion to creating a musical story spanning past, present and future creates an inspiring performance at venues worldwide, blurring the lines between geography and scene, light and dark, extroverted in its dancefloor pragmatism and at once truly introspective.

This young journey has seen Blue Hour attract the attention from many of the genre’s leading lights and institutions such as Berghain affiliated record label Ostgut Ton and Infrastructure New York/Ostgut Ton recording artist Dave Sumner aka Function – who invited him to remix fellow Ostgut labelmate Tobias and to contribute exclusive material for Function’s ‘Berghain 07’ mix along with full-track appearances on its supporting 12” inches.

With further releases and remix projects on the horizon, plus a busy global tour schedule Blue Hour’s presence is a welcome spark forward in the world of Techno and Electronic music.

Karschau About His Choice:
The first time I came across Blue Hour was a few years ago, when he played at ://about blank. It was one of those few memorable nights that stand out from usual club nights. He played an absolute killer set that night and I wasn’t able to leave the dance floor even once for the whole three hours he played. What I like about his productions is the combination of true old school elements and the modern twist to it – which he implements perfectly – resulting in very useful dance floor weapons that fit in different styles of techno. Last Christmas I was lucky enough to see that he offered the whole Blue Hour discography for free on Bandcamp. Reason enough for me to get all these releases and record this mix.

About Christian Zah:
Christian Zah, 25, is part of the Brutalism Crew and Wach & Wütend Gang, also Resident DJ of Tag X and Modern Musement both hosted at Artheater, Cologne.

After being into techno since 2012, he started with djing in 2015.

About Tensal:
With a musical career spanning over twenty years and more than one hundred releases, Héctor Sandoval (one half of Exium) is deep into a new project.

Tensal is both his stage name and the label that will accommodate most of this new work, which focuses on a brand of techno that is more modern and cyclic, and based on classic synth lines. Two different visions of underground techno merging into one project whose first releases have been backed by some of the most renowned underground techno DJs of the world.

His DJ sets explore all facets of techno by alternating different textures and intensities that draw mainly from his own materials. A journey through current techno that will certainly get your attention.

[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Stigmatique plays Ancient Methods

DJ:
Stigmatique

About the concept:
Here is the thirty-nineth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

Today we present you Stigmatique’s mix of tracks, collaborations & remixes by Ancient Methods.

About Stigmatique:
Born and raised in Leipzig, Stigmatique is not an unknown name anymore in the local music scene. He played at well-known clubs such as the Distillery, the oldest techno club in East Germany, and Institut Für Zukunft, which is an important part of the Leipzig and techno scene in general since over 4 years.

Stigmatique’s music is dark, spherical, raw and energetic influences characterised by, which go hand in hand in the constant change and harmony. His sets feature whiptail, driving but also spherical break-tones and rhythms, that pull the listener into a rousing sound world.

Almost one year ago the 27-year-old artist also started with the production of own stuff. In winter 2017 he founded with his very good friend and musical partner JANEIN, a label which is called SEELEN. With the release of their first record, they set new standards for techno in all its multifacetedness in Leipzig and environment. The meeting of old techno warhorse like Mørbeck, the French Marla Singer and the SOMA artist SLV provided with newcomers for making a splash in the German club scene. SEELEN. is and is not a fluke and therefore you can look forward to the next releases of this young techno label.

About Ancient Methods:
There’s something about the fearsome crunch of Ancient Methods’ sounds that defies dry technical description and demands that you go over the top, whether in talking or by moving to it.

Which isn’t to say he makes headbanging music – the “funk” part of his pitch-black-techno-war-funk is as important as anything, and his tracks have a healthy dose of bump’n’grind running throughout them, even if that grinding is as much angle-grinder as bogling.

The raw edges, thick-layered sound and general old-school soundsystem-in-an-industrial-building kick has leapt out amidst the minimal orthodoxy, creating a massive buzz over a few beautifully marbled pieces of vinyl with medieval etchings on the labels, prompting suggestions of a new industrial forward movement in the techno scene.

Stigmatique About His Choice:
There could be only one choice and that was Ancient Methods. Being one of the pioneers in the German industrial scene he also got his recognition in today’s techno scene and club scene. His sound is characterized raw, mechanical, dark, experimental and distorted sounds with vocals very well arranged and deliberate. It describes a distinct sense of industrial and techno. With releases such as “Seventh Seal”, as well as many other tracks and remixes on labels such as his own imprint Ancient Methods or Token, Hospital Productions, Aufnahme+Wiedergabe he set new standards. He has shaped myself as a producer and DJ, and that’s why my choice is Ancient Methods.

[NovaFuture Blog Exclusive Mix]: Objection plays Subjected

DJ:
Objection

About the concept:
Here is the thirty-eighth instalment of our series “abc plays xyz”.

Today we present you Objection’s mix of tracks & remixes by Subjected.

About Objection:
Objection is a DJ, Liveact and producer duo based in Mannheim, Germany. The rich diversity of their sets make their performances spontaneous, variable and full of tension at the same time. Their sound is atmospherically gloomy, driving and raw while still keeping a positive vibe. An electrifying, highly energetic mix that emerges from their great love of detail, born in the moment and always evolving. With the creation of their own label Distorted Perception as well as their eponymous series of events, they have created a platform for individual and innovative techno, as well as high-quality productions. This has generated support from international artists, such as Marcel Dettman, Kobosil, Inigo Kennedy, Freddy K, Giorgio Gigli and Boston 168.

About Subjected:
Anomity as a function, mystical without usual clichés. No hiding behind masks, no digging in the past, no techno purism, no strive for fame – SUBJECTED stands for distinctly deep, identifiable techno. Designed in the shadows, to be consumed in the darkness. A label. Music, and nothing more. Born in Hoyerswerda in 1983 and brought up in the tristesse of Berlin-Hellersdorf, he was strongly socialized by the lower class suburb with its grey, oppressive tower blocks. The first musical attempts he made were in Hip Hop and rap, but it wasn’t long until he started to be aware of all the progress happening in Berlin in the mid 90’s, and got infected by the early club nights in legendary E-werk and Tresor as well as mixtapes from local radio stations. All of this shaped him towards his own musical reinvention. Techno as a possibility of identification, allowed him to find himself. It’s the monotony, the uniqueness of the synthetic sound, that enabled Subjected to express himself – starting as a DJ, since 2006 also acting as a producer. This resulted in various projects and the launch of Vault Series in 2010. Ever since their first major successes, Vault Series are a guarantee for dancefloor-oriented tracks, with highly distinctive concepts and structures of sound

Objection About Their Choice:
Subjected has had a great impact and influence on us as producers and given us a lot of inspiration for our studio time. We love the rich diversity in his productions and the unique custom sound he produces. Each track sounds exceptional and speaks for itself. To us, those tracks are the perfect combination of dark and raw techno with a great ability to implement a complicated, spherical and complex melody when the time is right.
