Mutant TG, Throbbing Gristle’s first ever collection of remixes available again on CD via NovaMute/Mute.

In many respects Throbbing Gristle as artists, self-promoters, marketeers, label owners and music makers broke the mould on every level and decentralised the whole music making process into their own hands. It therefore came as no surprise when some of the most notable figures in electronic dance music jumped at the chance to re-work some classic TG catalogue. The record was originally released on Mute’s sub-label NovaMute in 2004, and saw reworks from DJ and producer Carl Craig, electronic duo Two Lone Swordsmen (Andrew Weatherall and Keith Tenniswood), Basement Jaxx’s Simon Ratcliffe, electronic post-industrial duo Motor (Mr Nô and Bryan Black), as well as TG’s very own Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti.

Formed in 1975 from the ashes of performance art troupe/media guerrilla cell Coum Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle consisted of Genesis P-Orridge (1950 – 2020), Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter Christopherson (1955 – 2010). During their most active period of 1975 – 1981, TG fully delivered on punk’s failed promise to explore extreme culture as a way of sabotaging systems of control, releasing seminal records such as The Second Annual Report Of Throbbing Gristle (1977), D.O.A The Third And Final Report Of Throbbing Gristle (1978), 20 Jazz Funk Greats (1979) and more. After years of pursuing different projects, the band reformed in 2004, performing several concerts and releasing projects such as TG Now (2004), Mutant TG and Part Two: The Endless Not (2007) before disbanding for good in 2010.

Industrial electronic pioneer Chris Carter gives Mute US labelmate Daniel Avery’s ‘Lone Swordsman’ a masterful new remix. Original track was created in tribute to the late producer and DJ Andrew Weatherall.

Hot on the heels of his recent album, Together In Static, and a pair of live shows at London’s Hackney Church, Daniel Avery today shares a new remix of “Lone Swordsman” by Throbbing Gristle’s Chris Carter. The track was originally released in 2020 as an homage to Avery’s hero and friend, the late Andrew Weatherall. Listen to the remix – which is accompanied by a fittingly psychedelic visual – here.

Reflecting on Carter’s reimagining of “Lone Swordsman,” Avery says, “Chris is a true musical inspiration in so many ways, someone who has never stopped creating and a figure whose work continues to sound like it comes from another world. I’m ecstatic to have this one out there.”

“When Daniel asked me if I’d like to remix his Andy Weatherall tribute, how could I refuse,” says Carter. “I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to pay homage. Andy was one of the brightest, funniest people I’ve ever known, I feel privileged to have had the honour of being in his company sharing his countless anecdotes and experiencing his legendary pioneering DJ sets. Who else could play the Pink Panther theme in the middle of a set and get any with it? Andy could… Andy did.”

After Chris Carter released the live album Disobedient in 1998, followers of the Throbbing Gristle mainstay remained a little unsatisfied. After all, Carter still hadn’t issued a solo studio LP in well over a decade (1985’s Mondo Beat being the previous entry). A short year after Disobedient dropped, fans were treated to Small Moon, a record that both builds on the successes of Disobedient and also sees Carter offering up some of the most dancefloor-friendly material of his career.

The Throbbing Gristle sound had always contained a good dose of techno and club music, but on Small Moon it feels like Carter is specifically making music to dance to. Opener ‘Arcadia’ is a righteous mix of chopped-up drum fills, ambient house production ala The Orb and a kick drum that wouldn’t sound out of place on a gabber tune. ‘Praxiz’ and ‘Soho … 3am’ take this sound in different directions – the former is an EBM trip, the latter is on more of a sunrise breakbeat tip.

In the middle of Small Moon we find Carter developing the psychedelic ambiences of Disobedient while also bringing back a little of Throbbing Gristle’s wild experimentation. With its dusky production and glowworm melodies ‘Klyyp’D’ could be a companion piece to Carter’s beloved ‘Moonlight’, while the dubby ‘Non-Pop’ sets the scene for King Midas Sound to enter the fray some years later. This new edition of Small Moon also comes with the bonus ‘Small Moon Redux’ at the end of the record.

Small Moon is one of Chris Carter’s most enduring pieces, an LP which sees him putting his unique musical mind in service of groove and texture.

Mute’s Chris Carter series continues with this new edition of the 1998 live LP Disobedient. The Throbbing Gristle fellow hadn’t released a solo album for well over a decade by the time Disobedient came out, so it’s safe to say that people were curious to see what Carter was getting up to as the new millennium approached. With these tracks, recorded at gigs during 1995 in London, Manchester and Vienna, they got their answer.

On this record Carter updates his hot-headed industrial style for the era of electronica. There are moments across this LP when it feels as if Carter is at once playing with and passing judgement on contemporaneous trends in electronic music. Boards Of Canada, Andrew Weatherall and even the downtempo sound of Lemon Jelly and Air can be detected in the makeup of tracks like ‘Chakutut’ and ‘TVX’. However, it is Carter’s trick to stir up these sounds into potent psychedelic broths, and his heady atmospherics prefigure the work of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. The dubwise production that laces Disobedient also herks back to post-punkers like A Certain Ratio and The Pop Group.

More than two decades on from the original release, Carter revisits the Disobedient sound on this latest pressing with the bonus track ‘Disobedient Redux’. The eleven-minute-long epic of hulking synths and smoky textures shows that Carter still sees the value in a little disobedience.

Presenting a selection of recordings of his 1995 Disobey tour, Chris Carter’s Disobedient lit the way for a new generation of freaks and weirdos.

The inimitable Chris Carter released his sophomore solo LP Mondo Beat in 1985. Dropping a half-decade after his Industrial Records debut The Space Between, this sextet of tunes has come to establish itself as one of the essential works of the extended Throbbing Gristle catalogue. Think of Mondo Beat as TG’s Liquid Swords.

Mondo Beat is best-known for ‘Moonlight’, a track that is now considered an essential piece in the story of industrial music and New Beat. The chugging synth bassline, dreamy spools of melody and zip-zap rhythm bring to mind D.A.F. if they’d slipped into a sort of Lynchian reverie, possibly with a Cocteau Twins LP spinning away in the background. It’s still a masterpiece all these years later.

The tracks ‘Noevil’ and ‘Mondo B’ run with the ‘Moonlight’ template, albeit removing some of the more harmonious elements to concentrate on groove and texture. ‘Real Life’ and ‘Beyond Temptation’ lead the listener down a darker path – while the former comes across like The Pet Shop Boys reimagined by Bauhaus, ‘Beyond Temptation’ is the sort of lacerated EBM delight that finds itself in vogue once more at the time of this reissue. Completing the record is the murky anti-music experiment ‘Nobadhairdo’.

Chris Carter’s Mondo Beat shows us what happens when industrial musicians try a little tenderness.
