Press Info:
Definitive Recordings reissues Plastikman’s classic Acid House Mix of his own ‘Do Da Doo’ feat. Marshall Jefferson. Evergreen stars Jamie Jones and DJ Minx serve up their own new remixes.

First released in 1993, and now re-recorded with new vocals by Marshall Jefferson, techno mainstay Richie Hawtin dropped this tune under his Robotman alias. It became an instant underground crossover classic and a cornerstone of the Definitive label’s early catalogue, capturing Hawtin at a time of great innovation. It was also a significant factor in merging the house and techno worlds together, with the track adopted by leading DJs from both genres. Upon its initial release, the credits attributed the track to a ‘Richard Michaels’. Hawtin’s father, Mick Hawtin, was also used in the campaign image across press and merchandise. Mick Hawtin worked as a robot technician in the General Motors car factory and inspired the track.

Jamie Jones steps up first and is one of the most notable DJs and producers in the scene. His Hot Creations label and Paradise party are where he continues to explore the intersection of house and techno. This remix features his signature low-end bounce and futuristic tech house sound, complete with stark, laser-like synth lines and funky drum patterns. It’s a warm sound designed to energise the club.

Next is Motor City guardian DJ Minx, who heads up the DJ collective ‘Women on Wax’ and has been an ambassador for Detroit house and techno around the world since the 90s. She dropped the underground minimal hit ‘A Walk in the Park’ on Hawtin’s Minus label in 2004 and now comes full circle with this remix. She leans into deeper, more swung drums and shows knowing restraint by building freaky vocal fragments and lush chords that keep dancers locked in the groove.

Last but not least is the original Plastikman Acid House Mix, spanning nearly 12 minutes of deep, hypnotic pressure. Classic 909 drums and a signature 303 bassline intertwine throughout. The acid line changes shape and texture from smooth to more prickly, and the percussion keeps dancers locked in for what is a truly mind-melting trip.

NovaFuture Notes:
“Do Da Doo” was originally released with other remixes by Definitive Recordings in 1993. In 1994 the “Plastikman Acid House Remix” came out separately. For Europe Mute’s sublabel NovaMute released most of the stuff in 1994 (NoMu35) but there were missing the “Hard House Mix” and John Acquaviva’s version. Instead NovaMute’s records had a remix by David Holmes and a version called “Drum Dub”.

This release from 2026 has new remixes.

The release is credited to Richard Michaels – an alias of Richie Hawtin.

Press Info:
The 30th Anniversary edition of Plastikman’s Musik, the groundbreaking second studio album by Richie Hawtin as Plastikman, has been announced for release on NovaMute on 6 December 2024.

The album, originally released via NovaMute / Plus 8, followed 1993’s Sheet One and propelled Hawtin into new levels of international success. On its initial release, in Nov 1994, Hawtin was central to a burgeoning underground scene in Detroit, and the album, which expands on his unique and innovative minimal techno world, was launched with Plastikman’s first ever live performance in Aug 1994 – at the derelict Packard Plant in Detroit, in a room encased in black plastic sheets.

Before the full album hit the shelves, ‘Plastique’ (later described by Q as “… the flipside to Hawtin’s early singles, all ticking percussion, feline acid tweaks and cushioned sub bass”), set the stage for a more dance floor friendly album, albeit one with an unsettling and sinister side.

Musik, which featured tracks such as ‘Freek’, ‘Kriket’ (which Raf Simons used earlier this year in the Prada Men Spring/Summer 2025 show), ‘Fuk’ and ‘Marbles’, was soon heard by a much wider audience. Plastikman live appearances at Glastonbury, Tribal Gathering and a headline slot at Megadog followed soon after, prompting NME to declare Plastikman to be “Fiercer than Orbital, funkier than the Prodigy and more insatiably danceable than anything else on the bill”.

The album, described by The Guardian as “music as you’ve never heard it before” and by The Wire, who made it one of their Albums of the Year, as “… a masterpiece”, defined a moment in techno that still echoes today.

Now, 30 years later, to mark its anniversary, the album has been remastered from the original tapes, reminding us why Plastikman is a name that still resonates and that the album’s intensity – on and off the dance floor – has lost none of its potency in the intervening years.

Manufactured with environmentally conscious packaging, pressed on bio-vinyl.

Press Info:
Richie Hawtin and Mute are excited to announce the 30th Anniversary Edition of Plastikman’s groundbreaking debut album, Sheet One, set for release on BioVinyl, remastered from the original masters and available via sublabel NovaMute on double vinyl on 1 December 2003.

Plastikman is just one of Richie Hawtin’s alter egos, and Sheet One was the first in a series of releases that started a phenomenon with seismic influence – its stark production, quite unlike anything else on the electronic scene at that time, and an instantly recognisable and somewhat controversial acid-blotter CD cover introduced the world to his unique sound. The album was the beginning of a long creative relationship between Richie Hawtin and Mute, and soon took its place as a crucial classic electronic album. The release has also been remastered for digital re-release, courtesy of Manmade Mastering from Berlin.

With Plastikman, Richie Hawtin defined a time and place, expanding the dimensions of Detroit techno and redefining the possibilities of electronic dance music, evolving over six albums into one of contemporary electronic music’s most distinctive voices: minimalist, psychedelic, groove-laden, and transcendent.

Born in Oxfordshire, Hawtin’s family moved to Canada when he was nine and, growing up he was heavily influenced by both his father’s diverse record collection and his own acute curiosity for everything electronic, watching from an early age as his father dismantled various electronic devices, rebuilding and modifying them in front of his son’s eyes. It was inevitable that his passions for music, technology and computers would be finally drawn together, and upon hearing the early sounds of Detroit Techno and Chicago Acid House on Jeff Mills’ late 80’s Detroit radio show, he found his direction. Travelling between his home town of Windsor, Ontario (Canada) and Detroit, Plastikman helmed some of the most intense, mind-bending parties underground electronic music has ever known.

2023 is also the anniversary of Dimension Intrusion by his alter ego F.U.S.E. for the Artificial Intelligence series on WARP (which gets a reissue on 10 November), another incredible milestone for Richie Hawtin whose award winning prolific career to date has seen him become one of the most important techno DJs globally; a technological wizard with decades of innovations behind him; label head for both Plus 8, with John Acquaviva and M_nus; the PLAYdifferently mixer / technology company; as well as a growing career in the sake industry with his ENTER.Sake brand and the Sake 36 emporium in Berlin. Over the last thirty years, and often as Plastikman, Hawtin has collaborated with some of the cultural world’s leading creative figures including Raf Simons, Anish Kapoor, Andreas Gursky and John Gerrard.

A series of Plastikman vinyl reissues will continue in 2024.

Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman states: “After a few years of experimenting with equipment and techniques, I slowly started to find my own unique direction and sound by digging deep into the possibilities of the Roland TB303. The first crucial steps were the F.U.S.E. tracks ‘F.U.’ and ‘Substance Abuse,’ both throbbing dancefloor inspired physical work-outs. That led to my idea of taking the sound of my style of Acid deeper into a more cerebral long-form experiment that became the foundation of ‘Sheet One.’ Recorded mostly over an intense 48 hour period, the album came alive as I paired the Roland TR606 drum machine to the TB303 for my first time, which opened the doorway into this unique Hawtin trip! ”

Daniel Miller from Mute states: “Pure electronic music innovator!”

Press Info:
Celebrating its 20th release, this edition of LF RMX features appearances from two of the scene‘s cutting edge producers: Richie Hawtin under his guise of Plastikman alongside Carl Craig‘s Tres Demented-alias.

While Hawtin‘s original might seem a minimalistic bleeping experiment to some, Len Faki‘s edit has plenty of groove to it. Equipped with substantial low-end frequency and a solid kick, the track slowly develops an ambiance that’s spooky, tribal and mesmerizing.

The flip carries an equally strong rework, its grand acid riff and standout-vocals holding center stage, with newly added percussion driving the momentum that turn this one into a peak-time hitter in true crazed-out Tres Demented-style.

Press Info:
This year is the 25th anniversary of Plus 8 Records, the label that John Acquaviva and I started at the beginning of our technology-fuelled journey into music.

We thought of celebrating in many ways – an anniversary world tour or releasing a best of compilation. However, in keeping with the original vision of Plus 8, we decided to celebrate the occasion by revisiting the very reason we started the label in the first place:

releasing new forward-thinking music.

For me personally the anniversary was an inspiring moment to get back into the studio with similar intensions as in those early days.

I was very happy to be back where it all started. Equipped with updates of my original studio ‘friends’ and combined with the latest recording technologies, I then stripped the setup down to its basic components and found freedom within those limitations. No real plans, just the everyday process of getting up, turning on the gear and pressing record.

In that environment I had the opportunity to revisit the personalities that I had explored earlier in my career, re-defining my own interpretation of Techno.

From My Mind To Yours.
