Press Info:
Luke Slater’s timeless ‘Love’ gets remixed by Burial, Marcel Dettmann, Lucy, Scuba, Silent Servant, and more on Mote-Evolver this May.

Released on Slater’s iconic ‘Freek Funk’ album on NovaMute – one of the most seminal techno albums of the 90s – ‘Love’ finally gets the remix treatment it deserves more than two decades after its initial release.

Leading the charge, Burial makes one of his rare appearances on remix duties and doesn’t disappoint with an atmospheric and mesmerising reimagining with an aesthetic reminiscent of ‘Untrue’. Lucy then reels out a deep-diving techno roller with precision kicks and tantalising melodies. Luke Slater then adopts his The 7th Plain moniker for a collage of sound extending past the 15-minute mark, before upping the energy with a moody reverberating number as Planetary Assault Systems.

Marcel Dettmann provides two takes on ‘Love’; his ‘City’ remix features a cacophony of metallic rhythm, ebbing pads and plenty of swing whilst mantra-like vocals operate throughout, followed by the thudding ‘Black Glove’ remix with its murky tones and rattling effects. Cascading drums and lively trumpets is next in Silent Servant’s upbeat and infectious take, until Scuba concludes the release under his SCB alias with a high-tempo cut fuelled by funk complete with an idyllic breakdown.

Press Info (English):
Marcel Dettmann releases Test-File, his first full Ostgut Ton release since 2013’s Dettmann II LP. The 2×12” sees the renowned selector and longtime Berghain resident in explorative form, combining compact experimental techno vignettes with writhing, dubby and distorted long- form dancefloor portals – as well as a stoned and unexpected turn into house territory. At 22 minutes over 6 tracks, Test-File is a series of sonic contrasts united by Dettmann’s uncanny intuition for patiently shifting, improvisational dance music.

3-minute opener “Test-File” bangs in with rapid fire kicks and tape-delayed electric zaps, reversing midway into a kind of electronic palindrome. The momentum is sustained on standout single “Ascending”, where an overdriven basswave surges through a tunnel of industrial noise. The EP then emerges into the arch, squishy house of “Autumn77”, filled with sirens, pads and sampled vox/laughter.

The second vinyl returns initially to rhythmic experimentation with the 3-minute “Torch” lurching forward rattling and machine-like, interspersed by passages of groan and hiss. “Error (1st Take)” bubbles along dub-wise, tripping atmospherically though a haze of out-of-synch synth bursts. Closer “Metalloid” wraps it all up with a hypnotic, rubber band acid line and smudged 808s clavs.

Press Info (English):
When I was asked last year to put together the new Berghain mix, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Almost immediately I had a general idea and direction for what it could and should sound like – even though I also knew that achieving the vision would be a challenge. At its core, the mix represents the variety and dynamism swirling around my musical cosmos; one filled with different strands and eras of Berlin club culture since the fall of the Wall, in all of its unpredictable and weirder facets.

In this sense, it was important for me not only to include different stylistic elements and my tendency towards all things funky – from loop techno, bass and breaks to swung hats, UK funky, electro and more. But it was equally important that the mix truly reflected the energy in the club and on the dancefloor, which is why it was recorded live at a Klubnacht in Berghain in November 2017. For that set, I made the decision to play vinyl only and had dubplates made of all previously unreleased tracks in order to maintain a consistent sonic characteristic and uniform mixing approach. Of course, vinyl is also my favorite medium.

For the mix I selected tracks that had inspired me personally, including both new music and older gems from my record collection. Take Rok, for example. I remember the first time I’d ever heard techno was at UFO, when I danced the entire night through to Rok’s set. In the years that followed we would DJ together in Tresor, Suicide, Ultraschall, and the music he played and produced grabbed me and simply wouldn’t let me go. His track “Coke N Shit” and Space DJz’ “Side On” remain timeless, while Noncompliant’s “Women’s Work” or “Gannets” by Substance aka DJ Pete have secured a place in my sets as future classics. Espen Lauritzen’s “F/T/S” in particular represents an absolutely key track to the mix, with a raw and driving energy that embodies the essence of what I was trying to achieve as a whole.

For the accompanying Berghain 08 12”, I managed to secure tracks from longtime friends Electric Indigo and Boris. Electric Indigo I first met as a customer at Hard Wax before eventually joining her behind the counter – although we properly got to know each other during a DJ set I played at Subversiv. Opening the mix with “Registers” – and including it on the 12” – was an honor. Boris and I have have known each other since the mid-90s when we both worked at the offices of Dubplates and Mastering. We have always both loved and played disco in our sets, which is where our collaborative track “Div’Hain” gets its groove. In addition, rRoxymore’s melodic bass on “Tropicalcore” and Stefan’s “Panther” turn the 12” into a kind of mini-compilation with four very different tracks that go in four different musical directions – and half by female producers, which was also important for me.

Process-wise, recording the mix live was surprisingly fun, as I was constantly getting feedback from the crowd. This made the work involved a lot easier, despite the many moving parts and the fact that there was no chance for do-overs. Also, in addition to the mix, I also set up a mic within the club in order to capture the atmosphere of the space. I then added these additional field recordings to the finished version, though not for the entire duration of the mix due to the amount of diffusion the recording contained. However, their strategic placement and mixing live in front of a crowd has, I believe, allowed me to capture the evening’s raw energy.

Last but not least, I would like to dedicate this mix to all those who believed in me and have supported and accompanied me on my long and very personal musical journey. And I would especially like to thank DJ Niplz (R.I.P.) to whom I will always remain truly grateful, Errorsmith for his sincere friendship and KILLA, who supported me with investing her heart and mind throughout the project.

Press Info (English):
RAUCH is a sonic interpretation of the work of photographer Friederike von Rauch, composed collaboratively by Berlin-based producers Felix K, Marcel Dettmann, Sa Pa and Simon Hoffmann. Arranged and mixed by Marcel Dettmann, the recording stands in dialogue with von Rauch’s architectural images of post-World War II European monasteries, including La Tourette by Le Corbusier and Iannis Xenakis near Lyon, Roosenberg Abbey near Ghent and Maria Regina Martyrum in Berlin. The images are first exhibited together with the music on this LP as part of an installation for von Rauch’s solo show insgeheim (“in secret”), held at the Goethe-Institut Paris during the international Paris Photo art fair in November 2017.

While the complimentary relationship between the sounds of RAUCH (“smoke”) and the images exhibited in Paris invites interpretation, both can also be experienced as separate artistic entities. On the 42-minute-long LP, drones, modulating harmonic soundscapes and implied rhythms maintain an abstract emotional core while occasionally taking on vaporous, amorphous qualities. Similarly, von Rauch’s images – often borderline abstract in composition – resist being identified by location or spatial context. Nevertheless, they also hint at their spiritual origin.

RAUCH is part of an ongoing artistic collaboration between Marcel Dettmann and Friederike von Rauch, which includes 2011’s Ash installation and three photographic works for Dettmann releases on Ostgut Ton.
