For the next instalment on Rødhåd’s WSNWG imprint the label boss joins forces with Berlin based producer and live performer JakoJako. The two artists present ‘In Vere’, an album created in a week-long jam session during Spring 2021 perfectly echoing the seasons mood and positive energy. Covering a wider range of styles from ambient over electronica to techno, the track names relate to the flowers and animals found during this period. Jakojako’s influence is apparent through out the release showcasing her signature ambient style arpeggios that are flawlessly blended with modular synths and organic sounds.

Berlin based modular synthesist JakoJako, aka Sibel Koçer, has announced details of an EP for Mute, scheduled for release on limited edition violet vinyl and digitally on 27 January 2023.

Listen to the hypnotic techno of ‘Auris’, the first track to be shared from the EP, below.

The first three tracks, recorded with an eye on the dancefloor and overflowing with joy and exploration “… came naturally and felt fluid…” explains Koçer. “I allowed myself to create these dance tracks without too many restrictions” and the final track, ‘Nexus’, originated from a recording of her live set. “This one is wholly unique, I will never be able to reproduce it, the recording was a simple stereo track that was very difficult to mix.”

Koçer’s passion for electronics began with an urge to play with sound, and a desire to learn more about this world of modular systems and patch cables. Before long she had progressed into performing regular live sets, had a Berghain Residency and a position at Berlin electronic music institution, SchneidersLaden. Despite a busy schedule – forthcoming events including Berghain’s New Year celebrations, Ratherlost’s New Year’s Day party in Amsterdam and a non-stop 32-hour ETMAAL party in Utrecht in Feb – she still goes works in the showroom once a week, “It’s still important for me to go there, the exchange of knowledge and ideas is invaluable and I feel like I want to give something of what I got over the years, back.”

The four-track Verve EP follows JakoJako’s debut album, Metamorphos (2022, Bigamo) and her collaboration with Rødhåd, In Vere (2022, WSNWG), both of which came hot on the heels of two blistering remixes for Mute – New Order’s Be A Rebel and Martin Gore’s Vervet.

JakoJako returns to Leisure System with Lux, an EP designed for diverse sonic needs, spanning rhythmic tranquillisers to potent dancefloor mood enhancers.

Building on the live and spontaneous process behind the success of her debut Aequilibration, Lux sees JakoJako further refine her playful and experimental approach in the studio. Present throughout is the sound of machines only just under control, which has come to characterise her productions.

Opener ‘Viridis’ began as part of a live set, revolving around an acid line processed to the limits of recognition, with driving percussion punctuated by structural twists and turns. The pace slows with ‘Sublividus’, evoking a moment of intense longing crystallised in time, like the distant horn of a ship fading into the mist.

‘Eos’ serves to release the tension. A distorted broken beat underpins the rhythm while clouds of harmony float behind a polymetric hook. In the closing minutes, ‘Ochros’ brings a single melody slowly to the boil, expanding in waves of increasing intensity, before bursting and coming gently to rest.

A strong colour-sound connection informs her use of contrast; the balance of light and dark. She explains: “The German word for timbre is ‘Klangfarbe’, which translates directly as ‘sound colour’. I like to think about synthesis in this sense, with basic waveforms being primary colours that blend together to make new ones, which can be shaped into something like an image, that has a meaning or a story to tell.”

Regardless if you immediately associate the term metamorphosis with any kind of evolutionary adjustment, with shapeshifting, the complex transformation of music or if you simply think about the distinctive mark the last two years have left on basically each and everyone of us, it’s easy to agree that “Metamorphose“ is just the perfect title for JakoJako’s debut album for Bigamo.

JakoJako has made perfect use of the compulsory extra studio time regulated by the pandemic, developing and specifying a sound she instantly attracted attention with, as soon as she entered the scene in 2019 with her release on Leisure System.

“Metamorphose“ is one of those albums that can easily quiet a bustling room in an instant, regardless if you’re a connoisseur of this kind of music or not. It’s a compelling and highly absorbing collection of tracks, a surprisingly immersive experience designed for nocturnal listening (and beyond) that is difficult to not lose yourself within. Still the nine tracks on display feel almost like a paradox: they are fundamentally propulsive, yet they seem to decelerate time and space, they generate tension yet offer a weirdly soothing effect, they feel high-brow and imply endless intellectual stimuli yet they are deeply felt and simply want to provide simple truths about ourselves.

The most haunting aspect though might even be that it sounds utterly complete, even though the musical journey of this Berlin-based musician, producer and all-around gear-head has just begun.
