Press Info:
Border One pushes his sound to new extremities with this latest EP on Token ‘Spectral Tension’. Known for his driving, melodically abstract productions under eye twitching pressure, the Belgian artist takes his celestial signature and puts it to the test. These four tracks embody his sound: dancefloor experiments from a modular laboratory.

The titletrack matches its name with an obscure soundscape; the steadily paced rhythm is veiled by shimmering synth work from far out. Border One has always created depth in his music, the sonic environment is consistently, precisely described and ‘Spectral Tension’ kicks off the EP as a clear example of this technique. Explorative yet determined, Border One rolls through the track dramatically with focused percussion switches. ‘Lens Flare’ follows in suit, taunting the listener with a devious synth sequence. Claps thunder through the record like a strobe, flattening the dimension before opening for the rise. The B side presents ‘Dilated Horizon’, a slow burn with chemical sound design. Viscous synth work bubbles through a drone to create a singularly hypnotic effect and the tension remains brutally stagnant throughout the song’s entirety. The EP closes with ‘Photon Decay’, returning to dissonant keys and lurking pads far out in the stereo field. Scientific as always, Border One points a laser through this conclusion to add even more edge to an already anxious record. Skipping keys come and scratch the high end of ‘Photon Decay’, providing further mystery to the EP as a whole. Exceptional in his sound, Border One adds ‘Spectral Tension’ as his seventh release to the Token catalog.

Press Info:
A central figure in Belgian techno, Border One’s work has also been an international reference for consistency and direction since his early releases. An artist for artists with true commitment to his sound, Steven Petit’s impact in the studio and behind the decks is admired by anyone who has done their homework. His music describes tight pressure under curious, modular-like sequences that stretch through the timeline of each track. The scale of minimalism remains key here, and the Belgian wastes no time when tunneling through his erratic tracks. Jazz-like dissonance drives his tension and although each element is carefully measured, the records truly command dancefloors. ‘Inner Radiance’ is no different. The Fuse resident takes his game one step further, pushing harmony to hysteria at every turn.

The EP skips foreplay and dives straight into the extremities of Border One’s sound. In ‘Reducing Valve’, sustain is the key ingredient to this chaos. Slowly ripping the synth sequence into chords, Border one maintains a firm hold on the track’s tension while remaining playful with the main theme. ‘Sensory Reset’ is more of a lurker with its shifting pad that spreads across the stereo image. This track is characterized by a grim urgency as opposed to its predecessor’s progressive spiral. Keeping things low to the groove, the A2 swings about satisfyingly while Border One tinkers at his 909 constructions. Continuing his work on resonance, ‘Transfigured’ balances obscurity and surrealism. With a sequencer on the loose and a drum machine to emphasize it, the Fuse resident guides his audience into twists and turns at a constant pace. Here, we explore the dichotomy between the warmth and cold of a modular sound in techno, something frequently done but rarely mastered. Border One puts his years of experience to work to provide a combination of flair and balance to his tracks, something that is clearly translated in this EP. Of course, the final track – the title track – ‘Inner Radiance’ brings something very special to the table. The power of simplicity can never be underestimated and Petit knows just how to use it. With a strong core to an already sturdy track, the conclusion is spectacular. Emphasizing the electrifying nature of the record, Border One adds vintage chord stabs that fit right in with the sharp lead to create a powerful and memorable dancefloor experience. Not as much of a wind-down more than it is a gripping cliff hanger for his future releases, Border One provides once more an EP that underlines the true ethos of techno music.

B1.
Echo State

B2.
Split Recall

Press Info:
At this point a regular contributor in defining Token’s sound, Border One steps up for his sixth EP on the label in five years. As in many of his past projects, ‘Where is Now’ bleeds character through effect for a trip on the dancefloor.

Establishing the ambiance of the record, Border One meets pace with depth in the titletrack A1. A pressing bassline and progressively squelching synth accents combine to press the dancefloor, decorated with flickering hi hats. The track remains a steady roller throughout while maintaining an underlying attitude that only adds to its initial drive. Focusing back his energy on percussion, Border One prioritises eccentric groove with insistent tone. ‘Time Drift’ reaffirms his minimalist approach to the EP, only inviting anxious drum sequences with rising rides in the second half. The portal opens steadily in ‘Time Drift’, establishing a slightly more meditative tone than he’s done in the past. ‘Echo State’ returns to resonance, a sound well fit for the label. With quick loops and a heavy focus on the hypnotic, in a dancefloor-commanding kind of way, the Belgian artist gives his signature sound that rolls effortlessly off of well tuned soundsystems. With a tight grip on the track’s pressure, Border One transitions into the final track ‘Split Recall’. Here, he finds a direct path through a heavily psychedelic landscape. Bringing in occasional high pitched synth sequences and cutting through claps while the stereo field turns and evolves, Border One creates a closing track with attention to detailing his arrangement and variance. Rolling off in one section to stomping through others, the Belgian artist proves once more that his sound continues to be reinvented throughout his work.

Tracklist:
A1.
Echoes From The Abyss

A2.
Solar Flare

B1.
Celestial Observer

B2.
Escaping The Void

Press Info:
In this next installment of Token, Brussels’ own Border One steps in to showcase ‘Echoes from the Abyss’, another swinging, modular-driven project destined for controlled sound systems. In these four tracks, the seasoned producer does what he knows best: engaging the dancefloor through his signature sound design and use of space.

‘Echoes from the Abyss’ the track, like the EP, is a collection of sound associations that are synonymous with Border One’s sound. Resonant and cerebral yet bouncy and full of groove, the A1 presents a shimmering veil of synthwork that gives off a truly hypnotic effect. The follow up is much more sequence-based, focusing on the elements’ interactions. The producer plays along freely with his drum machine, responding to a classically loopy and dissonant main synth that insists its way from beginning to end. Tension is everything, especially when met with a sustained chord in the second half, turning the record into a weapon of suspense. ‘Celestial Observer’ comes back straight and center with a focused tone and a progressive arrangement. With a thick low end and shrill highs, Border One flicks through percussion patterns and filter sweeps to make an intense, at times close eyed dancefloor experience. Ducking back into obscurity for the last track, ‘Escaping the Void’ takes on a more minimally produced style that breathes a bit after its previous, denser productions. Concluding with a question mark is always very appropriate, and here we’re faced with a record caught between ethereal soundscapes and tense implications. With ‘Escaping the Void’, Border One closes with his latest contribution to Token with class as always, appealing to genre veterans and newcomers alike.
