Fear is the vilest of human emotions – it weakens and corrupts, leaving mistrust and paranoia in its wake. In »Against the Dying Light«, Swarm Intelligence embraces and wields fear, all the while breathing life into its rival: hope.

To explore these concepts, Swarm Intelligence turned to horror films for inspiration – choosing dissonance and atonality to create sinister and unsettling melodies, as well as Foley techniques to produce disturbing, unnatural sounds. The results are at times vicious and abrasive, at others acquiescent and almost mournful.

In addition to the sound aesthetics, Swarm Intelligence also drew inspiration from the narratives of these films – each track plays out as a scene in an overarching storyline.

The story begins with »Dusk Falls« – the grinding lead that carries the track represents both the untainted protagonist, free of worry, and the daylight, before it gives way to the descending night.

»It Scuttles« reveals the fiend of the story, as it stalks from the shadows. »I Am Everything You Are Running From« is nightmarish in its depiction of being pursued. »I Prey on Your Fear« shows the full fury of the antagonist – cacophonous swells build the tension to the point of seething, before all hell is unleashed.

»Against the Dying Light«, the title track, is deeply melancholic, embodying the moment where all hope seems to be lost. It is a pained reflection of the suffering and worry a few bring to many in today’s world, but »Light Reigns« proves there is yet hope.

Swarm Intelligence’s »Against the Dying Light« marks the first, full-length album on Voitax. With moments of seething tension, unrestrained fury and dejection, as well as glimmers of hope – this record may have its roots in industrial techno, but ultimately it defies classification.
