About The EP
Following 5 years in Berlin, two albums and a continuing residency at Tresor all bringing acclaim, Maedon is now an established voice and one also in transition. The 8th release for her own Rant & Rave label announces this in its title, 2.0, and its sound, a bold move away from her industrial roots towards the groove-laden techno that earned her bones im Keller. The product of careful study of techno’s roots and evolution, this gradual process reaps rewards here, showcasing a bracing new direction for an already-accomplished artist.

‘Working Out the Kinks’ leads off, more a kinky workout than the work-in-progress its title suggests. A vocal sample and rugged groove initially brings an old school feel, something quickly offset by strikingly modern production details. The EPs middle stride, ‘Temporal’ and ‘Growing Pains’, attacks heads-down techno head on with style to spare. On the former, growling lows and rotating pads are gradually joined by a symphony of sonic detritus, with razor sharp drums slicing through the murk. A bouncing bassline and blink-and-miss fills on the latter hammer the rhythm onwards, surrounded by reduced industrial elements and grimy ambiance. ‘Breakthrough’ does exactly that, it’s uneasily modulating lead and bruising EBM bass buffeted by waves of percussion then jackhammering to a climax confirming Maedon’s 2nd coming.

About The Artist
Struggle often creates stronger art, and for Maeghan Donovan, the artist known
as Maedon, this certainly rings true. Splitting her time between grimy Baltimore
and filthy Philly while learning her craft, her 2018 arrival in NYC confirmed her
emergence into the scene, debuting on Brooklyn/Berlin techno powerhouse Sonic
Groove. A longtime student of industrial and wave music, combining this with the
tough techno pioneered by this NYC institution brought her to new breakthroughs
and an international audience.

Three years later, Maeghan forges ahead to the next phase of her career following a well-received collaborative full-length with Adam X as Maedon-X on the legendary Tresor that confirmed her voice with finessed production and raw, autobiographical and political content. In 2023, she launched her Rant & Rave imprint seeking to platform female artists alongside established and new voices and refocus her sound on artistic techno, a move solidified by her continuing residency at Tresor. Assuring her future as the world falls apart, Maedon’s bracing sound and undeniable skills are a story still unfolding with its beginnings written in grit.

Our aim with this VA is to unite Valencian music makers, and those connected to our city, to raise funds for aid, rebuilding animal shelters, providing food and water to those cut off from supplies, offering clothing, and repairing homes in urgent need of help.

On October 29th, flash floods devastated much of the southern and western areas of the Valencia province, along with several other regions in Spain. This catastrophic event brought storm surges, collapsing bridges, and left thousands stranded on roads and streets, ultimately leading to a death toll that is now estimated in the hundreds and, tragically, still rising.

Homes, animal shelters, businesses, personal property, and families have all suffered immensely from this disaster—an event that caught thousands out on the streets, commuting to and from school, work, and daily life, with little to no warning. Severe alerts reached our phones 10 hours later, leading to even greater tragedy.

“Germanor,” our word for “brotherhood,” embodies the spirit of this compilation. We aim to reach out and support our city and those who have been far less fortunate than ourselves.

We are incredibly grateful to have such a diverse and talented community of music makers in the city, who have generously donated their work to aid in relief efforts. Our hearts go out to all those who have suffered loss.

Billie Holiday recorded her iconic version of ‘Strange Fruit’ on 20 April 1939. The track, originally written by a Jewish school teacher Abel Meeropol (using the pseudonym Lewis Allen), was in response to lynching in US southern states. A year later, Meeropol, a socialist, was called to testify before a committee investigating communism and asked whether the US Communist Party had paid him to write ‘Strange Fruit’. Later, in 1999, it was named the song of the century by Time magazine.

Laibach go on to explain, “There’s something that’s still very radioactive about the song; it’s still relevant because race is still relevant. The impulses that Meeropol was talking about are very much still with us, on the front pages of our newspapers and across our social media every day. For us, ‘Strange Fruit’ evokes racial injustice, representing not just lynchings, but racism generally.”

They expand, “Racism is a virus that mutates, taking on different forms as it adapts to a changing environment. Its mutation is made harder to observe by it being deeply embedded, not only in our traditions and institutions, but also in our unconscious lives.”

Laibach’s interpretation of this famous protest song is aimed at this new context of eternal but ever-changing and adaptive racism
