Press Info:
Berlin-based, Canadian artist Nicolas Bougaïeff returns to NovaMute with Primal Extensions, the first in a trilogy of EPs exploring complex rhythmic structures and theoretical concepts with the aim to challenge the conventions of electronic music. Known for blending academic rigour with sonic innovation, Bougaïeff continues to push the boundaries of techno by introducing advanced polytemporal techniques inspired by prime number ratios.

Listen to the EP below.

Building on the success of his previous Number EP series, which won support from artists like Chris Liebing, Charlotte De Witte, Dubfire, Gigi FM, and Bloody Mary, Bougaïeff continues to merge intellectual exploration with pure dancefloor energy. This series, titled the Prime series, explores what Bougaïeff calls “temporal liberation” – where intricate rhythms break the constraints of traditional techno and serve as a symbolic metaphor for broader notions of personal, social, and metaphysical freedom.

The four-track EP starts with ‘Necessary Machinery’ – dropping as a single today, 21 January – featuring Bougaïeff’s signature mastery of polyrhythms. Hypnotic, shadowy, and introspective, ‘Necessary Machinery’ is a profoundly intense trip marked by alien signals.

Drawing from his PhD in minimal techno and decades of experience, Bougaïeff continues his quest to expand the possibilities of electronic music. This series introduces listeners to prime rhythms, polyrhythms derived from prime number ratios that challenge traditional binary subdivisions, as well as his pivot mixing techniques that allow seamless integration of tempos.

Beyond his releases on labels such as Mute and NovaMute, Bougaïeff co-founded Liine, creators of the Lemur music app – famously used aboard the International Space Station. He founded the Berlin Academy of Electronic Music and reaches a global audience through his online tutorials, where he explains innovative production techniques. His videos on pivot mixing have gained notable recognition among industry peers.

Nicolas Bougaïeff’s Primal Extensions EP releases on NovaMute on 20 February 2025, with the single ‘Necessary Machinery’ available today.

out for a while: Si Begg – Energie Electrique [Central Processing Unit]

Si Begg

Energie Electrique

Label:

Format:

Tracklist:
01.
Energy

02.
Buckfunk Beatz

03.
MS10 Machine Funk

04.
Electro P1 B

Press Info:
It was perhaps only a matter of time before Si Begg rocked up on Central Processing Unit. Now an esteemed veteran of British beat tracks, Begg’s name has become synonymous with quality club productions ever since he burst onto the scene three decades ago. In the years since, Begg has released scores of records on some of the most prestigious labels in the business – Tresor, NovaMute, his own Mosquito. As such, his debut on the Sheffield imprint whose name has become a sign of quality since it launched in 2012 seems like a wholly logical progression for one of electro’s most consistently excellent producers.

Begg’s casual mastery of his sound is shown off by the fact that he doesn’t over-egg the pudding of the Energie Electrique EP. Rather than doing sonic cartwheels to get people’s attention, Energie Electrique is characterised by the way Begg adds or subtracts elements to sturdy grooves. It’s an approach which makes for a collection of tunes that manage to bring the boogie from the off while they also hide all sorts of aural Easter eggs amidst the mix.

On opening cut ‘Energy’, a droning start full of crisp drum programming soon develops into a head spinning electro groove reminiscent of Kraftwerk’s Computer World. An acid-laced bassline waxes and wanes, modulating in intensity across several minutes as Begg sprinkles in percussion, synth blurts and vocoder vocals. It’s a slyly insistent rump-shaker, and the – ahem – energy that the track provides carries through into following number ‘Buckfunk Beatz’. This joint begins with a gnarly, chattering synth sound before the sizzle and snap of a broken-beat kick-hat loop locks into place. While still very Kraftwerkian, ‘Buckfunk Beatz’ also has the playful grizzle of contemporary practitioners like Cardopusher and Begg’s fellow CPU operator Silicon Scally.

Things switch up at the start of Energie Electrique’s second side. Rather than rolling out a high-octane groove, Begg delivers a low-slung mid-tempo roller called ‘MS10 Machine Funk’. The programming on the kick drum here could almost pass for a dirty south hip-hop production if Begg didn’t lace it with such a strangely compelling use of the oscillator – sometimes squealing, sometimes squawking, sometimes wobbling, always thrilling. The mix flecked with chordal stabs, ‘MS10 Machine Funk’ is a masterclass in combining danceable beats with the quest for thrilling sounds that is so often the mark of a truly musical mind.

To round things out, Begg brings us back to the beginning. ‘Electro P1 B’ is a delightfully dystopian bit of Drexciyanism. Piston-hiss drum programming, nervy atonal synth nodules, some cavernous reverb deployment – this is a body-mover if ever you heard one, and one executed with all the style, aplomb and panache you’d expect of Begg.

Si Begg takes his Central Processing Unit bow with the Energie Electrique EP, a quartet of club tracks to rival anything in his vast and vaunted discography.

RIYL: Kraftwerk, Silicon Scally, Drexciya, Cardopusher, Annie Hall

Press Info:
You feel the weight of concrete, steel, and decades of history alongside every beat. “Berlin,” by Clark Davis is a homage on Europe’s ultimate home of techno. In cooperation with Clark Davis, a series of artists who definitely wrote long time techno history, have lend their support with thrilling remixes. G-Man, aka Gez Varley, renowned from his groundbreaking work with LFO, lends his innovative touch by two remix versions. Steve Stoll, a fixture on the global techno scene since the early 90s, brings his minimalist approach. Additionally, Roseen, inspired by sounds and rhythms of Detroit and influenced by Berlin´s subcultural night life, contributes his unique sound. All this makes “Berlin” a deep techno journey that does justice to the spirit of Berlins techno history.

CLARK DAVIS
1998 he bought his first record player. Ten years later, his first solo production was released on fach05 -VA – Treacle. In between he became an active member of the techno scene by organizing thrilling off-location parties and starting his career as a DJ. For him, diversification was always very important. Whereas other DJs just play four-to-the-floor sounds, he combines plenty of genres. His music style can be described as a conglomerate of Detroit, House, Techno and Chill Out – as DJ as well as producer. After his debut, several more releases followed on labels like AFFIN , 3rdWAVEMUSIC , Connect FOUR Recordings, and WALL Music.
In 2017, the Hamburg-based and multi-talented techno artist founded his own label District 66 together with an old school friend and he later released on Snork Enterprises.

STEVE STOLL
Producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno in the vein of early Plastikman and Joey Beltram (even though his career began as a drummer with the industrial label Wax Trax), Steve Stoll has recorded for Nova Mute, Probe, DJax, Delirium, Synewave and his own Proper NYC label. Raised in Brooklyn, Stoll listened to hip-hop and disco as a child, then joined the Army straight out of high-school. He served for five years, including a period in the Gulf War when he plotted bomb runs by satellite. After being released, Stoll shifted around: he played drums for the industrial group Sister Machine Gun, studied jazz and began recording straight-edged techno for Big Apple labels like 212 Productions and Damon Wild’s Synewave.

Stoll debuted for Sm:)e Recordings with the 1995 album Pacemaker. The following year brought another album, Zero Divide (recorded as the Operator) and an EP for Nova Mute (as the Blunted Boy Wonder). After he reverted back to Steve Stoll, Damn Analog Technology followed in 1997 and The Blunted Boy Wonder one year later. He stopped because of parenthood but now picked up the gear again.

G-Man
G-Man aka Gez Varley first came to prominence as one half of the ground breaking electronic group LFO. Their first release LFO “lfo” reached number 10 in the UK charts and went on to sell 150 000 copies worldwide .. ( 1990 ) (gez left LFO in 1996 and went on to do G-man as a solo project
Over the years Gez Varley has recorded for labels like Warp, Force-inc, Gigolo, Swim, K7, white noise and +8 ( to name but a few ) and worked with the following producers Mark Bell ,Richie Hawtin, Karl Bartos ,Marco Carola and Thomas P Heckmann.
Gez has also remixed many people over the years including Radio Head, YMO, Art of noise, Afrika bambaataa (planet rock), Laurent Garnier, Soft Ballet, Alan Wilder ( depeche mode), AUX 88 and many others.
He has also played most of the top clubs worldwide such as nature one germany, sonar spain, Berghain Berlin, the omen Frankfurt, the orbit Leeds, liquid room Tokyo, New music seminar New York).etc.
Over a carer of 23 years Gez has sold over 500 000 records world wide not including remixes and compilations and has had his music used for 2 computer games and 2 adverts ( vw golf and also the ” hummer” car in the USA ).

ROSEEN
Hailing from Berlin, Roseen stands as both a DJ and a prolific producer. His journey into the realm of electronic music began in the early nineties, and from those early days, he’s been spellbound by the pulsating rhythms of American techno, particularly the sounds echoing from the streets of Detroit. Yet, his musical compass doesn’t merely point to one city; it’s an amalgamation of Berlin, New York, Birmingham, and Brighton that shape his sonic landscape. These diverse influences converge in his productions and DJ sets, crafting a unique sonic tapestry that defies convention. As a producer, DJ, label co-owner, and one-half of the enigmatic duo Ausgang, Roseen operates in the shadows, quietly carving his path in the underground. His releases are a testament to the raw, unadulterated essence of techno – a genre he believes should maintain its purity. There’s a certain naivety intrinsic to his music, a purity that emanates from spontaneous and sketchy moments, creating an unmistakable vibrancy. Many attempt to replicate this spirit, but few succeed. For Roseen, that’s the artistry of making music. It’s something that, if you listen closely, you can discern in both his productions and his mesmerizing DJ sets.
